And thats my 2 cents
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I am another one that cant wait for this game to be released. Those videos look great and what I have heard about the game really makes me think that this could be the one to finally replace SWG for me. SWG was my first MMO and I have not been able to get the same feeling in any of the others that I have tried since leaving due to the NGE.
The Sci-Fi/Post Apocalyptic setting is very welcome as I am not a fan of the High-Fantasy genre, I mean really, isnt everyone sick to the back teeth of Dwarves and Elves? I can tell you I sure as hell am.
Another thing that draws me to this game is that it is a sandbox MMO and I far prefer that type of game to the linear class/level-based grindfests that are all too prevelant in the MMO industry atm.
I am following this game very closely and hope to God that Icarus can pull it off.
MMORPG History:
Playing - EVE Online.
Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion.
Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9).
Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.
Let me offer a few friendly suggestions until this game or anything other then a fantasy clone releases.
The Saga of Ryzom - open ended sandbox, non fantasy game with an unlimited free trial and an ingame tool for player made content http://www.ryzom.com/
EVE - again an open ended, sandboxy, non fantasy game http://www.eve-online.com/download/
Also keep an eye on Tabula RasaYou can sign up for beta now, they might be starting in the summer.
**edit** i really like that line, and as long as you don't mind, it's sig worthy.

Thanks for the tips Torak, but I have actually played both of those games.
I quite enjoyed Saga of Ryzom, but the lack of population really got to me so I ended up quiting after about 4 months. Do you know if the population has picked-up at all from around about July as I think that is when I cancelled my subscription?
As for EvE, I just couldnt get into the game at all. I missed having an actual character to control and also found the combat pretty boring. It seemed to be just a matter of targeting your enemy, turning on all your weapons/warp scramblers/webifiers/ECMs etc and orbiting your target until it was dead. Granted, I was never in any massive fleet battles or anything, but still from what I experienced of PvE and PvP it just wasnt for me. Horses for courses I suppose.
Anyway thanks again for the heads-up on those games, its just a shame that there arent more sandbox MMOs out there.

Lol, no, I dont mind at all mate, knock yourself out!
I am glad to see that I am not alone in my hatred of all things 'High Fantasy'.

I agree with you on all counts. Had "sandbox" type games had any level of market success there might have been a different trend in MMOs in the last 4 years. Unfortunately most of these dev teams pushed out unfinished low quality products putting the nail in the coffen for sandbox games. The first real polished game was WoW (remember WoW had a built in fanbase already - the battlenet people numbering in the millions worldwide, it was an easy matter for them to get them to swing over, its not MMOers playing WoW) I posted a survey some time back of WoW players. over 80% of the ones who did the survey never tried nor had any plans of trying another MMO. Of them 30% were totally unfamiliar with other MMO titles. Something like 25,000 people took the survey.
Thats whats driving the MMO industry right now, they are trying to tap that "outside the regular MMO market" customer, frankly because its huge. So far no one has had any success except for GW.
Ryzom, same as it ever was I suppose. Its no worse for wear then a year ago. It has an "average" amount of people playing. I live in the Euro timezone and I think that Europeans make up a larger portion of the population. Its still a good choice, it has very few "cons" for a sandbox game. Im going to be honest with you though, I don't think its improved at all since last summer, If anything the game has more then likely lost ground when that Nevex thing happened and scared people with possibly closing.
It completely boggles me this game doesn't have more players.
This week alone I have read and replied to a dozen threads of people saying they are "sick" of class / fantasy / clone games but none of them really mean it, they will all go buy LotRs because its "safe" you don't need to think, just do what the NPC tells you to do. Here is a reality the MMO players...they really don't mean what they say (at least here on this site) they claim to want something different but when it comes down to the wire, they opt out for a fantasy clone. Only in the MMO genre is everyone, from devs to players, crazy glued to the same type of game. Viva the MMO revolution
EVE...again I agree, I really don't like the fact you don't have an avatar either. You do have just about unlimited freedom. Yes, the combat is bland. PvE in EVE is about as much fun as brushing your teeth. They guy with the best ship wins. The interesting thing is a group of people in smaller well equipped ship can take out a much larger ship. A group of 5 or 6 well equipped frigates is something to worry about even for a lone battleship. Its typical of PvP based games, the core of the game is the community not the pre-made junk like quest. (similar to Lineage 2, people who quit or get hung up because of the grind, totally missed the game...its about clan vs clan and politics / economic control of regions via castle control, the grind is a minor obsticle if you are in a good clan)
Anyway, enough rambling...need more coffee....let me know if you find a decent free form game
It explains a bit of new stuff, and shows a few scenes from the tutorial, it all seems very nice.
