I wrote this really long post, but then when I pressed the 'post message' button nothing happened. So I will make it a shorter one instead.
To start off, I just quit. I did level up a cleric to level 32, just to give you an idea of how much i played.
Good points: graphics (especially the cities are very well done), cool animations, effects (spells etc), PvP system.
Bad points: linear gameplay, tedious leveling, interface/chatting, immature players, adena farmers, customer support, small world, character customization.
Alright some explanations:
The graphics part of the game might be its strongest point together with the open PvP system. The graphics and the atmosphere it creates with the cities really fits the game well. Also, most monsters are very detailed and are probably the best I have seen in a mmorpg thusfar. Also, the player animations when fighting, casting give this game something extra (although after awhile you do get bored of it).
Sound: music in cities/dungeons is very well done. Character sounds when fighting are very annoying in the long run.
PvP: Although it allows for some griefing at low levels, the open PvP is well thought out. The harsh penalties for randomly killing someone will keep people from just kiling for the heck of it. When you do, you will either need some friends to keep you safe, or go to a secluded area to fight mobs to work off your bad karma.
Ok, that covers (in my opinion) the good points
Bad points:
Character customization. If you ever played any other Asian mmorpg you will see this is not much different. Very little customization resulting in everyone looking very similar. Often you can only choose between 2-3 options, which look very similar. No body customization except hairstyle/color, 2 faces. Very annoying, since all the armor will look the same as well
Leveling/Money: the main problem is that everything revolves around the amount of money you have. But in order to make money the only way (besides being a dwarf and craft) is to kill things below your level. Why? because higher level mobs drop relatively less money. The drop a bit more, but are much harder to kill. So, what you have to do is kill easy things, which of course is quite boring/tedious. It doesn't require any skill (usually just target and hit) but also takes a very long time. Leveling itself isn't so hard, it just goes slower if you actually try to make money. And you want to do that, because if you level to fast, your gear won't be up to par and eventually you will not be able to level without massive downtime.
This also creates a nice market for Adena (gold) farmers. Because its so tedious and time consuming, some people buy their adena, which is farmed by the adena farmers. These farmers more or less 'abuse' the system by deleveling. What they do is level up a character, get all skills and weapon certifications. Then kill themselves over and over again. Why? because of the fact which I just mentioned. Lower level mobs drop relatively more money. So now they can go around in easy areas, 1 hit a mob, grab the money, next mob.. over and over again. This isn't so bad for higher level players, but the dungeons for lower level players are somethings camped by these people , who will kill you if you don't leave.
Interface/chatting. Absolutely awful. Maybe it is coming from SWG that I find this bad, but it is the worst I have ever seen. The targeting system is absolutely horrendous. Not as bad if you are a figther, but try being a support character in a group and you will have to use some crowd control spells on several mobs. There is no cycle target button (e.g. tab) so you will have to click on them. If you misclick you will move (since you move by point and click). This sometimes can result in aggroing mobs etc. At lvl 32 I got used to the system and didnt make as much errors, but still, why does it have to be so difficult. You also cannot customize any keys, there are no macros (so if you buff people in a group with 7 buffs each, that means 21 clicks )
The chatting system is as simple as they get. No ignore filter (which this game desperately needs due to the sheer amount of immature people). Also, your combat messages and private messages come in the same (small, not resizable) window. You can imagine you will miss some messages this way. All in all, not something suitable for a mmorpg. It is also quite annoying to constantly see people spam stuff with swearing etc. There are tons of ridiculous and offensive names making rp-ing more or less impossible.
Customer support. This caused me to quit eventually. They often have noone on staff (on my server at least), and when they do, you are lucky if they are even native English speakers. Also, all they do is get you unstuck, nothing is done about harassment, racism, offensive names or botters. I could not petition anymore because the GM forgot to close mine. AFter 8 days of emails, in game petitions from friends I still can't petition (which I needed because I was stuck once for hours). I just gave up on this as I doubt they will improve at all.

I am currently playing it since i got the free month but i wouldn't recommend this game. It's infested with chinese players using bots to play and earn adena wich they sell on ebay.
Why bother you might ask: Them bots steal every mob around and steal your loot. The best leveling places are more or less CLOSED thanks to them.
The worst part is that GMs don't do anything. I've reported several botters but never got any answer or reaction.
The level grind is insane in this game. It is all about mindless killing the same mob for weeks.
I suggest you go buy COH. It seems to be fun at least for a month or 2. If you don't wanna spent 50 bucks on COH for 1 or 2 months fun just wait. I wouldn't recommend any actual MMORPG at this moment since there's many good new ones on their way.
If you need one NOW and don't want to play COH there is AO and DAOC wich are solid MMORPGS but they are the typical grind.
I have been playing now for a week in retail and had three weeks during the beta.
I am enjoying the game but there are some serious issues with it (as listed by all the other posts previous to mine). The best bit of the game is the graphics and the PK'ing.
If you dont like PVP then this is not for you. If you want to go it alone then again this is not for you. However if you like making friends and joining clans etc then you could have some fun here.
The level grind is very hard but can be achieved with some dedicated time. Get help from others and it soon clocks by.
And dont forget the update we will get next month, there will be some really cool features in that. I would say pay the $50 and give it a go for a month, then if you dont like it you can cancel it.
I agree with your review almost word for word ihiktacos. The game had a lot of potential and I stuck with it for quite a while hoping it would be fulfilled but in the end the bad elements of the game and especially the community eventually turned me off to it.
I would however disagree with the other review that the skills by race are identicle or that your stats/race/class do not play a big role in your characters abilities.
As with any game its very difficult to know how good it is based on other players reviews. Its too bad you didnt get a chance to play it durring the open beta so you could see for yourself.
I thought I would reply to this thread as we have also been considering subscribing to this game.
Me and my partner played this game during beta and enjoyed it very much. It was our first introduction into mmorpg and we got hooked. The graphics are excellent; we reached level 26 & 28. The pvp was not over the top during beta, hope this has not changed. Lack of customisation of your characters base features didnt bother me too much, graphics more than made up for that.
Major bad points are memory not released in game, so after travelling from the island to the main land and then trying to exploring is virtually impossible. Had to restart the game to continue, this needs to be sorted, upgrading from 256 to 512mb ram may help. Reading the posts on the official web site is very off putting, the lack of official replies to players problems/questions is a joke. I would like to know if the problems have been addressed and how the game as changed but its very hard to make a judgement with all the conflicting posts, Lots of speculation about the chronicles. If the games not changed much from beta and you can afford the expense give it a try and post your own opinion. I would be interested to know.

All you know is what you are and what you are is all you know!
This game is sorta worth it, why?
Pros:
1. PVP, good system, PK can be tweaked a bit but it's still good and a nice addition to the game.
2. The level grind isnt as bad as FFXI.
3. The female characters are hot!
4. Easy to learn how to play the game.
Cons:
1. Mob and NPC server go down a lot.
2. Too many botters.
3. A lot of assholes, on my server anyway.
4. Not so great player economy.
5. All dungeons and most popular hunting areas have lots of botters (relates to Con #2).
6. Kill stealing.

I think everything depends on wether or not the Dev team will listen to the players or not. Thats whats yet to be seen. If they really listen to the community this game could be a good game. I hear Chronicle 2 is coming out real soon. I would like to see whats being fixed in to 2. Chronicle 1 will help but, it doesnt help the core issues. That keep coming up.
Its all in there hands now, to wether or not Lineage 2 will take off in North America or not. But they need to hurry b4 EQ2 and WoW launches.
Different views is a huge understatement for this game lol go to the official boards and youll find a large assortment of love and hate posts. Id just like to touch on a few of the major issues
BOT FARMERS -
NEG- yes they will steal a kill now and then but on the other hand so do some regular players and most of the time its on accident. But i find the best way to deal with them is be nice throw them a buff or a heal and you make a friend they will help you out if you get in trouble and IMO not having to run 10 min to get back to your hunting spot after a death is worth a few stolen kills.
POS- while bots suck and make the game unfair it only helps the economy in the long run. Why? Because Lineage 2 has an economy stabalizing factor, the fact that you can sell items to the NPC for a decent price so even if the market gets flooded due to farmers the prices on items will never go below that sell price and the adena they add to the game (over 50 mil per day oer server) makes your items in your private stores sell faster.
PVP-
NEG- NCsoft condones griefing so if you arent a hardcore pvper or cant deal with dying pointlessly now and then this is nto the game for you.
POS- The consiquence color system of pvp is pretty succesful at keeping most people in the game cyvalized
CUSTOMER SERVICE-
NEG- NCsoft customer relations are just as bad as any other mmorpg out there yup you name it they have the problem. an hour to get a responce from a GM item loss with no compensation yeah its all there. There is no NA based Dev's the game is korean its made for koreans the way koreans like it and they dont intend to change that.
POS- besides the fact that the game is based out of korea what game doesnt have these issues?
MAJOR POINTS TO THIS GAME AND WHAT GAMES THEY ARE SIMILAR TO
Experience grind - on a scale of 1 to 10 10 being the hardest its probably a 9 right up there with EQ and very similar
Classes - Mostly reminds me of DAoC in that they tried to stear away from the traditional roles of EQ type games by adding lots of small details here and there. But in the end you still end upw ith your basic rogue warrior cleric wizard type arangment.
Grouping- group exp sucks in this game unless you get a really good group there is little to no group exp bonus so to level fast soloing is your best bet
Interface- what can i say? It sucks but you get used to it. Its very simple and you cant change it.
The major things to look forward to are castle sieges and dragon pets.
but its all in all a good game
Death do come to us all!
Death will come to us all!!
i would like to point out the biggest con, in my opinion.
its very very boring to lvl, you have few playces for each lvl to exp in, and all you do is use the same skill or 2 over and over an insane number of times. add to that, you will basicly be in the same spot for many lvl's as well.
ive played some games, like legend of mir, where all you basicly do is click on monster and hit them with your sword(asuming ur a warrior) , but i have never been so bored try to lvl up as in lineage2 for some reason.
i stuck with it for the 1 month of open beta, becasue i am an old lineage1 player and have been waiting for years for this, long before 99% of the players heard of lineage, but try as i might i could not like this game.
I agree with Fulmanfu, the biggest problem of the game is the leveling. The grind is really really horrible once you get to 28ish or so. The White cons that you use to get decent exp on, maybe .60-80% per kill drops to .09-.11% a kill. And these mobs now have tons more hitpoints, and takes alot longer for you to drop. Each level you dont get nothing really new, just and added powershot here or aura there.
Its not like in EQ, where you get spells or something every 4 spells, that are actually really cool, and make u more powerful. Like in EQ, you would be like. One more level i get my new DOT spell or pet. It isnt that way in Lineage 2. So basically you are grinding away, hours at a time, trying to hope to get to siege level, which still isnt in the game btw.
I think the mobs A.I. is ok for MMO standards, and if they will shorten the grind at least, it would be a good start. Sad thing is i never could get anything out of the Dev team. I remember when i played UO back in the day, we would all gripe about OSI and there Customer service. Well there Gods compared to the CS in Lineage 2. They wont answer anything. There will be days the GMS wont post, and then when they do they post about some real life cartoon drawing or costume contest. Which most of the players could give a rats A$$ about.
WHen you go to ebay, the accounts that are getting sold, are the low 30ish accounts,. Thats when the big grind starts to kick in. Alot of people that defend the grind are level 15 or so. They have no clue whats in store for them.
When you die you can loose your weapon, just to a mob death. In Lineage 2 weapons mean everything. Looseing your weapon you have saved up everything for on death, is just way to hardcore for most. And i think thats the best word that describes Lineage 2 in every way. HARDCORE.
Hardcore leveling, Hardcore Death penalties, Hardcore Crappy PvP system.
Still again after slamming the game, i will say it has potential to be a great game. If they are willing to fix some of the core issues of the game. But as of right now they are not letting anything out about it. The Koreans are even gripeing about the grind if that tells you anything.
