So what MMO are you playing that is ub3r? Please do tell. If you condemn LOTRO for being like other MMO games then let's hear you condemn these other games like Vangaurd, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, etc.... Other wise you are just trolling IMHO.

LOTRO never ever said it was going to be the "Next Generation of MMO's" it never made the claim that is was going to be "Revolutionary". If you got your hopes up it was because you were either misinformed or just plain blinded by your own "visions" of MMO grandeur.

As for not saying it would be revolutionary, did you even read my post? You quoted it, but either didn't read it, or just didn't get it.

Lemme try again, slower this time. Why are gamers happy to just accept the same rehashed, revisited game over and over? Is it because it says Lord of the Rings on the box? If it were just generic fantasy game #1,231,414 would you still be singing its praises?

Maybe because they like it and keep paying for it? Wow what a shocker! There might be some people out there that actually enjoy the EQ1 formula that most games including WoW try to recreate and refine.

If that upsets you then I don't know what to say but that maybe you should give other game genres a try instead and forget the whole MMO thing. As I said unless you have the few tens of millions of dollars it would take to create a title you are looking for then you won't be seeing "Revolutionary" MMO games coming out into this competitive market. MMO's are always going to be "evolutionary" in nature because of their ever increasing development and upkeep costs.

Yep, you're right, hoping for something deeper, better, or even just different is not only wrong of me, but it's downright unAmerican.

I should just accept my complimentary lobotomy, kick back with American Idol, and wait to be spoon fed whatever pablum the industry puts in front of me with smile.

Edit: I think Vanguard shows that someone somewhere isn't getting what they paid for. Just because the budgets are going up doesn't seem to have an equivalent effect on the quality of MMO's.

People who like LotRO, take a look at this post above , it is a fisher, he just wants to cause a rise and get satifaction out of us for flaming him. Do not give him that satisfaction. You have been warned....

Out of any game I've played in the past 5 years, I've never seen so many npc's doing different tasks, instead of kust standing around.

When i tested Vanguard, I didn't see any npcs walking around, as well as the motionless quest npcs and npc's that didn't react when I killed their friend right infront of their face.

Lineage 2 had very static npcs and environment, as well as a lack of any wild life.

DAoC Again very static, mobes in clumps for no reason, and the npc's barely moved outside of a city.

Eve online had Attacking Raider A.I. so that is almost the only comparison that can be made.

We can go down the list one by one and just make comparisons. I will post this for your reading pleasure though:

I tell you what, I'll make a video of me going through Bree. Or if there's another town you'd rather I tape that you feel shows off the the lively atmosphere, and the NPCs. Perhaps some mobs you'd like me to show off their fancy tactics?

I just chased down a goblin i was fighting with my champion and he was loosing so he turned tail and ran all along telling me to leave him alone. Show me another game that they do that. He also ran by other goblins that i had to run by chasing him making me pull aggro from them. I had worked my way half way up the hill to get to the cave i needed to go to talk to a quest NPC that was inside. I had to chase him all the way back down that hill. Fight off the ones i pulled aggro from and then head back up. I have yet to find another game were the AI acted this way to this extent.

Wrong. I have played WoW since the beta. I only just quit last week, having taken a few breaks in the preceding years. To be honest the expansion pack killed it for me.

It just really bugs me when people bash LOTRO without even examining the faults in their own games....NPC's in WoW? The baker who wanders around Stormwind doesn't count y'know.

Better re-read my statement....didn't  "bash" anything....and how do you know I haven't examined my "own games" for faults...agree the SW baker doesn't count but there are many more in places you obviousely have not noticed...too many to start listing in all zones and especially in Outland, try sitting on your butt in the middle of the road in Shadowmoon Valley

Will do, Gimme a day or two to find a replacement for fraps, though. It's gone tits up on me. And, I'm not a big fan of it anyway.

And, no, I don't think it's crapping would be needed, though I would like to see them move like it is in your SS. Wildlife's just standing around like statues for me. Have yet to see rain around Bree. Don't recall any snow while playing my dwarf, but could be wrong.

Unless of course, they removed all that from the downloaded client as well... In which case, I'll be a long time in finding any of that.

All the things I posted where in Beta 2 and on. THe game is a live, just because you didn't see any of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

You see a deer all the time in Chetwoods , rabbits . Dude I remember a rabbit running beside me back in beta one, it was awesome lol.

Think you are just in the wrong areas or the deer with chased off. There is a ton of wild life and tons of A.I. throughout the game

LOTRO has trees, grass, flowers which gently sway in the breeze. NPC's don't stand rooted to the spot like in most games, they walk around, push wheelbarrows about, dance, scrub floors etc.
Sorry, but as a former WoW player myself, you want to see a static game world? Go play WoW. Trees which don't move, NPC's which stand on one spot 24/7....*yawn*

Midgewater frogs, or the ones at the pond by Ellie Cutleaf's plac NW of Combe?

Anyhow, I found a deer. And with no other players in the vicinity, I approached it. It ran off about 5 feet, and when I chased it, it turned towards the right, and ran another five or so feet, then stopped. From there on, it just did it's normal random wandering script. I tried to herd it by getting in it's way, but it just ignored me. After about 45 seconds to a minute, a Loremaster ran by, the deer started to bolt, but his raven killed it. I'll have to play with the wildlife's AI more later tomorrow night when everyone and their mother isn't around. Seems there's a limit on how far/how many times they will run. Some sort of anti-kiting code, perhaps.

Fought a goblin in the swamp with my hunter. Ran straight at me, and button hooked a bit at the end so he was 45 degrees to my left. Don't know if he was trying to flank me, or what. Didn't know there was a bonus for flanking, special abilities notwithstanding. He eventually ran at about 40% health. He stopped after about 30 odd feet, and was about to do something, but the last shot killed him before I could see if he was just changing direction, or if he was doing something else.

It was foggy in the Marsh. Though, I'm not 100% sure if it was strictly foggy, or if it was the dread effect, as I was in dread mode while I was there for some reason.

P.S. The frogs at Ellies didn't do anything ::::05::

  • Mars505Mars505 Member Posts: 623
Fog in the swamp has a variety of thickness at a variety of different time. Face it ColdMeat  you are wrong about the A.I.  I mean what more do you want ? Deer crapping and peeeing in the woods, wild animal sex ? The game used the animal A.I as an additive to the bigger picture.

    I'll bite.

Make a video of Buckland. Don't forget the partiers at the fair, or all the hobbits working in their gardens, or the ones practicing their archery skills near Crickhollow.  Buckland is pretty lively.

Don't let coldmeat get under your skin. He got what he wanted a lot of LOTRO player blood pressure up. We all know he is simply wrong anyone who played the game even if they do not like it know he is wrong. I do not need fraps videos, I play the game and the enviroemnt and npc ai is some of the best in any mmo ever.

Star Wars Galaxies, before the "combat upgrade" and way before the "new game enhancements".  That my friend, is what you were seeking.  The dynamic questing was only present in BountyHunter missions due to the obvious lack of vision exhibited by Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts.

Though i have noticed the mobs move around alot more than they did in closed beta.  Heck the spiders sometimes try to run away now also. I have seen this all over the game. Being a hunter it doesn't do much good i just shoot them. But if your a melee class you have to chase them. The do it randomly. I have also had a goblin run away throw a spear at me run up attack me then run back throw another spear and run up and attack me again.
Go to the dwarf city kelendul and you will see some dwarves standing around on gaurd duty, some walking around. Others will come running from out of your area of view to help when you attack the signature walking around.
I am not saying it is perfect but it is alot more than i have seen in other games. And i did not play either EQ's or WOW. I mentioned in my other post i may be wrong. Just that the games i did play the mobs didn't act the way they do in LOTRO.
I can't remember were i saw this but a dev had told a person that they are constantly working on the AI with the new AI system they just bought and the AI's will be acting differantly than expected as time goes by. I have noticed some of this. I think given time they will have the AI's doing things we only wished they could do.
Every time I fight a hunter sort of goblin they root me and move so I can't attack them and then throw spears at me.
