So my friend went up to EB games because thats pretty much where he lives. They gave him a few preorder cd's or something and then in turn he gave me one. Well the game became available on the 30th and i played it a little bit. I played the beginning sequence for the human fighter dude and it was alright, moderately intriguing. I got into the city/village and realized ive done this exact thing soooo many times. I have no inner desire to level up another character with mindless grinding and kill x amount of pigs quests anymore. With my countless characters on wow, ffxi, daoc, eq, and i know theres a few more. LOTRO is just another version of the same thing. I think LOTRO finally satiated my appettite for the MMO world because every MMO is just going to be a different version of the same game. Well im gonna go back to the FPS because that actually changes year to year. When the MMO market starts changing things up, drastically, ill be back for some new experiences. Anyways...thats how LOTRO made me feel. The hot button, stand there and slash and be slashed for 30 seconds and watch your exp bar rise slightly...just isnt for me anymore. Its old. 3rd gen MMO's are just prettier 1st gens...There needs to be a whole new genre not generation of this MMO. LOTRO has been done, a dozen times, if youve already done it dont buy it.
Never take life too seriously youre never gonna make it out alive.

Personally, I think LOTRonline is far more 3rd Generation than Vanguard. And Turbine did it without billing themselves as if they were.
fortunately i've only played WOW and EQ2 so am probably not burned out and i am having fun - so basically i won't argue the same ol' same ol'
but what i did find entertaining was the statement that FPSs change at least - uhm, how?

although they do get prettier with each incarnation
it seems like most games in the same genre are all pretty much the same
MMORPG for a few years yet.
If you are bored with current MMOs, LOTRO will bore you to death.
I do like LOTRO, although at times I do find myself bored.
The game does get better and I hate all starting areas but the Shire.
I am going to be playing LOTRO at least until WAR or AOC comes out.
So, take some time off and maybe MMOs will change when you are ready to try them again.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Don't bash someone on his opinion on the current state of games. I know most people will pick up lotr just cause of the name, and will be in for a great dissapointment.

He probably meant that every round of a shooting game (like cs for example) the people you play against are usually in different spots, have different guns etc.
Like any good MMO, the game becomes more involved as you level and explore. They can't just dump everything on you at once, people would be overwhelmed.
This is an excellent MMORPG. IMO the best since WoW. Only time will tell how it stands up over the months to come, but it seems extremely promising and I'm actually enjoying it a lot.
It's polished, largely bug free. The retail launch should be smooth as butter, which will be a step above many other MMO releases.
The game world is beautiful, the terrain and geography are the most realistic so far.
I'm equal parts explorer and achiever. I tend to fall into the high achiever mode with most MMOs, because there really isn't much use to exploring. In this game, I find the exploration of the world and just plain hunting and resource gathering as I transverse the landscape to be great fun. I leveled to 15 pretty fast, but I wasn't focused on leveling.
Everyone has different tastes, but I think this game has huge potential. If you are looking for an MMO, play the beta and REALLY give it a go. You might find you really like it.

The arguement that FPS are diferent every year is flawed in my opinion. I think all games are relatively the same now. There are always the one breakthrough game that started a genre. The MMO, FPS, RTS, flight sim, etc genre are older and well established. The changes and experiences will not be dramatically different.
From my point of view it is the story that these games tell is what makes the difference.
I tried LOTR in closed BETA and didnt really like it because I was raiding in WoW and thought the game just didnt match up. Once I figured out how unhealthy WoW raiding was with respect to the time involved versus the reward my eyes opened and I began to look for a game wtih a rich world that didnt require every hour of my life.
As it stands now LOTR provides me with the much needed world to get absorbed into, a story I have always enjoyed, and I dont have to spend every hour in game picking weeds and preparing for and raiding.
Triston Master Carbine/Master Swords (SWG Eclipse)
Triston 29 Warden (EQ2 Permafrost)
Weland 70 Hunter (WoW Hellscream)
Suidan 36 Cleric (Vanguard Flamehammer)
Suidan 50 Champion (LOTR Gladden)
That's great that it's polished and bug free, but how is the actual combat system, the gameplay, the animations, the quest system, etc?
Which classes are soloable, which need groups? Which are sought after in a group? Are their quests and dungeons that you have to have a group in?
Soloing is cool, but I'm hoping there are places where you HAVE to group to get though and get some nice gear, etc?
And..probably the most important question of all:
How is the community? If it's anything like WoW, I'm gone. If it's anything like Vanguard, I'm in.
Three people doesn't make a community.
Three people doesn't make a community.
I can sense the sarcasm. But really you're right, Vanguard's playerbase is diminishing it seems like, but what I really meant was that I couldn't stand the community in WoW. Too many "Omgzorz I pwnt you" kids and not enough mature players. Vanguard seemed to have more mature players.
I hope LOTRO does as well.
