Would you Play: Stick Figures Online?

JtownJtown Member Posts: 16

I was thinking of this.  Would you play a game that for the most part was completey devoid of "next gen graphics" and instead purposefully underdevoloped the graphics? If it had incredible gameplay, immersive storyline, and was completely bugfree?     Instead of focusing on the intense labor demanding visuals of the game the developers could pour in into character animations, character control, storylines, and performance.   My vision was of a stick figure as main character , mobs just made of lines and not shaded in fully (or just in black and white). Armor, /upgrades would be the same, but maybe only the most uberleet items or mobs would be colored in :) The game could be cheap with minimal monthy fee.

Think about how sucessful Paper Mario was for example...

Just curious...

Um, so you're going to charge me a monthly fee to play with a stick figure.  I have paper and a pencil for that.

Paper Mario is more feasible, but linear MMOs (MapleStory) are usually ridden with youngsters and almost unplayable.

Now, a cell shaded MMORPG could be interesting.  There could be a lot of cool armor and weapons done that way.

But no, no sticks please.  Sticks are boring.

Sure, if the game was fun, I would play.

I prefer solid controls, good feel, fun gameplay, challenging pvp with a sense of accomplishment, and smooth animations over pretty flashy spell effects and crazy complex models.  Gratuitous eyecandy only goes so far in a game.  Too many games focus on silly pretty things instead of actually making the game fun.

Yes, I still play R@gue and muds now and then. Heck still play my NES games and many XBLA retro releases.

Gameplay and game length has been suffering for graphics lately and it is bad trend.

my game is more like "3D Geometric Shapes Online" right now while I test features.  Will invest in art later... art's over rated during production.

I'd rather play a text game, aka a MUD. And in fact, I often do. It's pointless to use graphics simply for their own sake, graphics offer certain advantages and if you are not going to make use of them, don't bother. Its fairly difficult to allow for things such as character customization with stick figures, i'd prefer to be represented by the text "kyoufu", at least its unique,

I would play a game with wireframe graphics if that is what it takes to get some fun and interesting game play.  Heck I would write a game that way just for the fun of it.

My friends and I were talking about this a year or so ago.  You could start off as a stickfigure, and as you completed epic quests, you might get a little more filled out.  Such as a nice helm or a 3d sword.

Keep the graphics simple and save a little something extra for those special area so they don't seem like Kansas anymore....

    gameplay>graphics.

eh... no I don't think so. I always prefer gameplay over graphics but playing with stick figures is a little too far.

Maybe, depends on how much I actually liked it. Probably wouldn't want to pay as much for something that is obviously graphically simpler to develop. I don't have a problem with the stick figures though, thats kind of funny. If you make stick figure dogs and stuff it'd be hilarious.
