Hop over to lotro.com and (if you already have the pre-order code) enter that into your Turbine account (make one first if you don't already have one) and you can then play a downloadable open beta version until launch day (actually for 30 days after launch).

This is true except for the part about 30 days after launch. You must enter your retail CD key from a purchased box to play on April 24th and beyond. There was a message from the devs about this on the offical forums.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

The Pre-order Program officially ends when the retail product is launched on April 24th, 2007. You may continue to apply your Pre-order Product Key for up to 30 days post-launch so long as you apply it before you enter your Retail Product Key and before your first subscription billing date.
I know I seem repetitive but I am really curious as to how I get my Pre Order key? Me and my friend ust ordered it and I am trying to figure it out so we can start playing tonight.
GameStop needs to send the codes via Email. If they don't, it's a breach of law....And given by the hundreds of flash images and countless swirling colors and junk on LoTR's front page, I'd say Turbine has a 'trap' set here. I'm still waiting....

And what that means is you can still get your founder benefits even if you don't actually purchase the game right on the 24th, but they have stated that access to the game with a pre order key ends on the 24th of April.
In order to play your character you will need to first purchase a full version of the game and enter the CD key.

I read somwhere in the preorder page that it may take up to 2 buisness days for the preorder key to be e-mailed, which I hope is true for I havent received doodly squat and its been a day, oh except for the receipt of purchase which means they have my money, of coarse. Gamestop ffs. Oh and that reminds me, I read, also on the pre-order pg. somewhere that no boxs are actually sent and its all just an electronic download via e-mail depending on who you pre-ordered from. I'm getting that old bad feeling again. this kinda vague info always has been a pre cursor for a crappy game, in my experiences anyway. need bit torent? dont need bit torent? saw indications both are true. Is'nt strategery nice. Figured I'd download the beta while waiting on the key. So got the downloader and then did installation. When this finished came to the end and still didnt have a key so just closed that and I cant find it anywhere in files. These people dont moonlight for the Dep. of Defence, by any chance? j/k, hollidays and beta's at the same time= screwball stuff...always, while D.O.D.+ hollidays= no one is minding the store, and body count goes way up.

I just got my Middle Earth Key and I am downloading the game.
Am I heading in the right direction?
Then when the game is shipped to my house I can use that key and it will transfer all my progress over the next few weeks?

Final Fantasy 7
Sure, now that LOTRO.com is back up, you'll find that in the Pre-Order FAQ, Item #26.
