Well. I honestly gave it a good go all the way uo to 15 but it just ins't holding me in any way. If it doesn't grab me in the beginning and hold me well through 15 levels, it just won't work me for me. To all those that enjoy it, I wish you fun and fortune. To be honest, the two (yep only two) problems I have with LOTRO is
1) Pricing: Anything that has a "199bucks for a lifetime" stamp on it, is bad in my book. And, yes, I think GW sucks. Reason for this mentality? Well, simple, servers, developers and so forth costs money. A one time fee, won't bring more money than once, and that is bad. Okay okay, so there aren't any company out there apart from CCP that actually puts the income to good use, but still. (FYI CCP provides expansions for free and will continue to do so. And also tossed the servers a friggin RAMSAN to get rid of lag. That's some heavy duty ass expensive hardware..)
2) It's WoW all over. Controls, style, heck even the interface is basic WoW. Just a bit different color art and names.
Personally, I'm tired of the clones.
And, no, I don't play EvE :P

They were my favorite books - however - considering I read them over 40 years ago I truly wonder if I will be disappointed with the rendition offered by Turbine.......I am a casual player - only played MMORPGs games for about 2 years - but delighted thus far with the beta Lord of the Rings Online.

Great battles, nice music. if lotro could be at the same lvl than these movies it would be great... and it would be enough for me !

- AI ? you must be near mobs or attack them.. Or they never attack you. Sometimes you attack an orc, next one doesn't move.
- when your char has some levls more than the mobs, it's over, he can sleep near ennemies, eat near an orc no more attack nothing happens = zone becomes a "dead gaming zone"
- Houses ? most of them are closed. when you can come in , you'll have to wait ! (another zone) it's really borrying never saw that before on a MMORPG
- Dungeons ? only some, they are NICE REALLY but SO FEW
- High lelv content ? looking for it like everyone
- NPC ? they don't even move hands or mouth when you clic on them (they look like statues)
- map is really SMALL. really small .... so small, in tolkien's books, when frodo' goes to Rivendell with Strider it takes days, it's a hard and long trip, in lotro you 'll only have to walk 20 min (and 10 min with a horse)
- we only have the Eriador for the moment (noone can be sure we'll have Minas Tirith, moria rohan Isengard mordor gondor harad)
- no housing (bad for RPG way of gaming)
- no Pvp; only 1 zone for MP disconnected from "normal" zone: we can only play the Good ones, really borrying (i hate PK but imo lotro has 0% of sense of humor, 0% funny, 0% crazy, 100% serious, "clean" and borrying.
- armours under lvl 20 are simply ridiculous (thinking about my 1rst char in dec 2006, looked like ... don't know really but for sure not a warrior [much better after lvl 20]
- hats are most of time STRANGE (looks like musqueteers, or antic priest, Tyrol hats etc saw everything in lotro) only helmets etc for high levl have good looking. - when you play a hunter you don't have to buy arrows, so you can shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot again lol all time if you want , really strange (...)
- you can jump from Weathertop, most of time your char only has 30 sec of lower walk, sometimes dies (sometimes), and your equipment + points of life comes again to 100%.
- even in High lvl zones it's easy to survive. Mobs attacks then you'll only have to run some meters and... they give up. You're safe. I saw Rivendell with a Lvl 7
- what about Giants near Ost Guruth ? never saw a line on Tolkien's books about them ? Very bad picture, bad animations and no interest at all
- our char : have same age, same looking same face (they are clones) most of time you think you found a friend IG, you're wrong it's another player . all my humans had same face ! EXACTLY. And around 25/30 years old...

- events inEurope LAG awful lag, a nightmare... When we are most than 20 players on a zone it laggs, and you'll have to wait not for fighting but even for WALKING. Someone said in fora LOTRO was perfect for screenshots and window's desktop . Imo it's not far from being real . Nice countries, nice pictures, cool music, and that's all. you take a horse, and you'll see the Shire. Then you come back to Bree (the only real "town" we have for the moment ... 2 streets, 11 min with a horse ( 10 min for the lag )

Am I the only one confused by this post? Are these mostly complaints from Beta 1 or 2? I played in Beta and now in the world tour and I have seen a ton of improvement with little bugs or lag?
Just because they go by the books down not mean they are forced to split their game up into only 1 release and 2 expansions.
As i see it we're looking at atleast 3 expansions in the first 3-5 years before we reach Mordor.
All the inbetween minor zones will be added in free updates but the major parts will come as expansions.
I do however expext to see Moria come as a free update or as a part of Expansion 1 in a year+ or so..
I'm patient enough to wait for the areas to release because i'm going to play other MMORPG's too alongside with LOTRO.
The ones i plan to look at/play in the future alongside with my lifetime account in LOTRO.

I agree, it might be Bree online now, but why would they have to stick to the books when considering how many expansions there should be? You do know that Tolkien himself looked upon his masterwork as one book not three!

I absolutly agree to this posting of yours and your initial one in this thread, I left the beta a while ago and thought well maybe they will add more content soon before launch. Some content which they provide now is quite nice, mostly however just the ordinary mmorpg quests. The size and how repetative content gets after you have played with the very limited number of classes indicates that they have to release expansions soon otherwise I see masses leaving this game.
Quite shocked at the people saying Vanguard, Anarchy Online and Shadowbane are better MMOs.
I tried all of them and they're all awful. Anarchy Online barely has any customers left, Shadowbane had to turn into a FREE MMO and Vanguard is riddled with problems, awkward systems, a horrible navigation system.. and 30 other more pages of problems I could write.
I've been on LOTRO beta for awhile and can say it's one of the best MMOs i've played since WoW came out. There have been 4 or 5 released in that time and they've all been awful. It is definitely on par with WoW, if not better.
No, it doesn't do anything "new", but what do people really expect? Do you buy a First Person Shooter or a Real Time Strategy and start saying "DAMN I HATE THIS it has nothing new at all"? Face it, no game out there any longer does new stuff; all the ideas have been taken from somewhere or reused. The reason we keep playing various games is for their graphics, storyline, content and so on, which ARE the new factors that can be introduced.
I think LOTRO has some polished quests, pretty much eliminates "pure grinding" (you have to hunt out monsters) but you don't have to just sit there alone or in a group for 4 hours clicking on monsters to gain levels.
The world is fun to explore, the scripted events on quests are a lot more plentiful than most MMOs i've seen out there and the crafting system actually has good tables of items that aren't vastly outdone by dropped items.
To comment on whoever wrote that original list;
LOTRO uses the same engine as DDO
Looks great to me, best looking MMO to date. Can't see how this is a flaw. Maybe you should upgrade.
LOTRO leveling is too slow
Slow levelling? What? Levelling in any MMO is what you make it. I seen people getting to level 30 within one week of beta server wipes, and yes these are the experience rates that will be used in live servers. I can get to level 20 in under 20 hours. You can easily achieve a max level char in under a month, less if you're a seriously hardcore player. If anything, it's too FAST.
LOTRO quests are boring
I guess they're boring if you played through levels 1-10 quests, yeah, as is the same with any other MMO. Starter quests are always simplistic to allow newer players to get into the game. Some are great, some are fun and some are average. That's alot better than most MMOs out there, since the usual rating is average, awful and utterly dreadful.
LOTRO combat is boring
Seems fun to me. Hardly any downtime, no relying on potions and a good blend of solo/group combat. You can solo all the way to 50 if you wanted.
LOTRO has bad character customisation
Er, yeah. Has as much as any other MMO out there, if not more. Characters at least look varied in the world. More than I can say for most games around.
LOTRO has boring classes
The classes are practically identical to 99% of online RPGs, how can you gripe about that? What, you think WoW had exciting, new classes?
I can only find one real problem with LOTRO and that's the fact it doesn't have more of a class list. However, that may be since all classes are balanced and ready to play from the start, which they do seem to be after trying most of them.
I quit Everquest 2 because my class was an awful gimp due to bad design. I also quit WoW because they nerfed my Hunter and Mage into oblivion, turning them into a shadow of what they once were. Fair enough they're both BETTER classes now, but that was after 6+ months of waiting? Glad that wasn't me waiting for bad developers.
LOTRO will be a great game and the only real competition I see upcoming to it is Warhammer Online, since Mythic are hyping it up so much.
You know why WoW has so many subscribers? It has no competition. This is the first bit of competition that has been presented to it in over 2 years, and I expect to see alot of the players drifting away from it due to severe boredom. Most people I talk to who still play say they're bored but stay due to nothing else.
Started playing it last night. I am currently playing COH/COV (never leaving that), SWG and dabble a bit in Guild Wars. Had a pretty good time grinding up to Lvl. 6 last night. The graphics were really nice but did remind me of WOW. According to some of the other posters the world should be more open so going to give it another run tonight before I pass final judgment. What I have done so far has been entertaining but not worth a sub, yet.

Up until i got my hands into beta i refused to touch this game.
I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan. I don't have some crush on Legolas (though being a straight male... that would be awkward) and i'm certainly not an owner of the ultra collectors edition. Star Wars is my game. I like Sci-Fi not fantasy! However, with the recent lack of games to play... especially MMOs that appealed to me. I was desperate and joined the beta for something to do.
I like this game. Truly i do. Theres alot to do for those who just don't want to quest and if you can stand a mild grind session for a bit of cash and a title.. then its pretty fun! The community so far in beta is fantastic. Few are nicer. Its even got a barrens chat! Go figure! people are helpful and kind to you when they're not grinding away unaware of chat.
The system is simple and quick to pick up. The graphics? Not bad! I've seen worse of course and they're up to par with today's technology vs this morning's computers. No ones left in the dark in way of performance other than a few lag spikes on the lower end machines or those using laptops running on 56k.
I'm ashamed to have bashed the game so much before trying it. its got good promise and will probably hold my time over until Tabula Rasa.

Leveled up to 6 on a hunter and champion and completed the noob region and got bored. No excitement. No adrenalin. Just a run of the mill WoW clone. Kill 6 boars, collect 6 flowers, kill a boss boar called oakentusk (doesn't WoW have a similar pig boss in elwyn forest?)
I appreciate the free open beta and Turbine seem like nice people but this game is not for me. I like some spice in my gaming.

To be honest, the two (yep only two) problems I have with LOTRO is
1) Pricing: Anything that has a "199bucks for a lifetime" stamp on it, is bad in my book.
And, yes, I think GW sucks.
Reason for this mentality? Well, simple, servers, developers and so forth costs money.
A one time fee, won't bring more money than once, and that is bad.
Okay okay, so there aren't any company out there apart from CCP that actually puts the income to good use, but still.
(FYI CCP provides expansions for free and will continue to do so. And also tossed the servers a friggin RAMSAN to get rid of lag. That's some heavy duty ass expensive hardware..)
2) It's WoW all over.
Controls, style, heck even the interface is basic WoW.
Just a bit different color art and names.
Personally, I'm tired of the clones.

Talking about lotro...
- AI ? you must be near mobs or attack them.. Or they never attack you. Sometimes you attack an orc, next one doesn't move.
- when your char has some levls more than the mobs, it's over, he can sleep near ennemies, eat near an orc no more attack nothing happens = zone becomes a "dead gaming zone"
- Houses ? most of them are closed. when you can come in , you'll have to wait ! (another zone) it's really borrying never saw that before on a MMORPG
- Dungeons ? only some, they are NICE REALLY but SO FEW
- High lelv content ? looking for it like everyone
- NPC ? they don't even move hands or mouth when you clic on them (they look like statues)
- map is really SMALL. really small .... so small, in tolkien's books, when frodo' goes to Rivendell with Strider it takes days, it's a hard and long trip, in lotro you 'll only have to walk 20 min (and 10 min with a horse)
- we only have the Eriador for the moment (noone can be sure we'll have Minas Tirith, moria rohan Isengard mordor gondor harad)
- no housing (bad for RPG way of gaming)
- no Pvp; only 1 zone for MP disconnected from "normal" zone: we can only play the Good ones, really borrying (i hate PK but imo lotro has 0% of sense of humor, 0% funny, 0% crazy, 100% serious, "clean" and borrying.
- armours under lvl 20 are simply ridiculous (thinking about my 1rst char in dec 2006, looked like ... don't know really but for sure not a warrior
- hats are most of time STRANGE (looks like musqueteers, or antic priest, Tyrol hats etc saw everything in lotro) only helmets etc for high levl have good looking. Think about hat my hunter won after the path of hunter, looked like a BEAR ^^ Not a grizzly but a teddy bear (ridiculous really , had to hide it)
- when you play a hunter you don't have to buy arrows, so you can shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot again lol all time if you want , really strange
- you can jump from Weathertop, most of time your char only has 30 sec of lower walk, sometimes dies (sometimes), and your equipment + points of life comes again to 100%.
- even in High lvl zones it's easy to survive. Mobs attacks then you'll only have to run some meters and... they give up. You're safe. I saw Rivendell with a Lvl 7
- what about Giants near Ost Guruth ? never saw a line on Tolkien's books about them ? Very bad picture, bad animations and no interest at all
- our char : have same age, same looking same face (they are clones) most of time you think you found a friend IG, you're wrong it's another player

- so we won't have great battles (minas tirith helm) because it doesn't work at all: everyone on Europe Final Event can say ! we simply couldn't play ! Lotro is for a small group + quests that's ALL. forget movies books and great battles near Minas Tirith of play with BFME.
- strange animals never saw in Tolkien's books
- you'll have to fight against bears, spiders wolves !!! when you see an Orc it's the paradise ! Even in Fornost you'll see more Aurochs than Orcs
- even Angmar is full of insects and animals...
- it's said Ost Guruth is in great danger... OK lol but never saw an attack from Orcs. Orcs stays on their camp, humans stays on theirs, there's a frontier (THE ROAD) between 2 opponents and you'll only have to take a quest on Ost Guruth and attack by yourself orcs , you'll never see them attacking Freepeople positions (Excepting for Final event
- since last patch (for the Europe 29.03) we can't buy potions, prices are very very high...
- most of quests = bashing quest (kill 12 wargs etc)
- you can't read books, even in Elrond' s house (it's only a picture)
- strange looking of characters, strange colors (green + yellow+ rose etc)
- Lore Master kills animals with balls of fire (!!! Lore master in Tolkiens's books aren't killers lol)
- we have Mammoths on Misty Mountains and YETIS like
- Spies of Saruman, I mean Crebans are more aggressive than Wargs, my hero couldn't walk 10 ms without beeing attacked by those "things"
- playing most of classes is borrying. The only class could play is Hunter.
- fights aren't fast enough, you clic on a skill and must wait until char shoots, it's long
- i'm not a HCG but LOTRO isn't for HCG for sure, not even for casual (i'm casual gamer) It's for newbies (easier than WOW
- most of bugs aren't fixed: ex : horse in Rivendell goes onto the mountain
- what about confusion between Witch King and King of Angmar, imo it's not the same age

Am I the only one confused by this post? Are these mostly complaints from Beta 1 or 2? I played in Beta and now in the world tour and I have seen a ton of improvement with little bugs or lag?

As i see it we're looking at atleast 3 expansions in the first 3-5 years before we reach Mordor.
All the inbetween minor zones will be added in free updates but the major parts will come as expansions.
I do however expext to see Moria come as a free update or as a part of Expansion 1 in a year+ or so..
I'm patient enough to wait for the areas to release because i'm going to play other MMORPG's too alongside with LOTRO.
The ones i plan to look at/play in the future alongside with my lifetime account in LOTRO.

I agree, it might be Bree online now, but why would they have to stick to the books when considering how many expansions there should be? You do know that Tolkien himself looked upon his masterwork as one book not three!
Anyway, just like Virtuella I am going to play multiple MMO:s at the same time, how on earth I am going to manage that is another question (probably by sucking at all of them...)

Only 2 "cities" (small ones) Bree and Trestlebridge, there's nothing to do in Rivendell, only 1 dungeon by zone, ... Can't play only in Hobbitebourg or Archet be serious ^^ Do you want to kill frogs 1 year on the shire ?

I tried all of them and they're all awful. Anarchy Online barely has any customers left, Shadowbane had to turn into a FREE MMO and Vanguard is riddled with problems, awkward systems, a horrible navigation system.. and 30 other more pages of problems I could write.
I've been on LOTRO beta for awhile and can say it's one of the best MMOs i've played since WoW came out. There have been 4 or 5 released in that time and they've all been awful. It is definitely on par with WoW, if not better.

I think LOTRO has some polished quests, pretty much eliminates "pure grinding" (you have to hunt out monsters) but you don't have to just sit there alone or in a group for 4 hours clicking on monsters to gain levels.
The world is fun to explore, the scripted events on quests are a lot more plentiful than most MMOs i've seen out there and the crafting system actually has good tables of items that aren't vastly outdone by dropped items.
To comment on whoever wrote that original list;
LOTRO uses the same engine as DDO
Looks great to me, best looking MMO to date. Can't see how this is a flaw. Maybe you should upgrade.
LOTRO leveling is too slow
Slow levelling? What? Levelling in any MMO is what you make it. I seen people getting to level 30 within one week of beta server wipes, and yes these are the experience rates that will be used in live servers. I can get to level 20 in under 20 hours. You can easily achieve a max level char in under a month, less if you're a seriously hardcore player. If anything, it's too FAST.
LOTRO quests are boring
I guess they're boring if you played through levels 1-10 quests, yeah, as is the same with any other MMO. Starter quests are always simplistic to allow newer players to get into the game. Some are great, some are fun and some are average. That's alot better than most MMOs out there, since the usual rating is average, awful and utterly dreadful.
LOTRO combat is boring
Seems fun to me. Hardly any downtime, no relying on potions and a good blend of solo/group combat. You can solo all the way to 50 if you wanted.
LOTRO has bad character customisation
Er, yeah. Has as much as any other MMO out there, if not more. Characters at least look varied in the world. More than I can say for most games around.
LOTRO has boring classes
The classes are practically identical to 99% of online RPGs, how can you gripe about that? What, you think WoW had exciting, new classes?
I can only find one real problem with LOTRO and that's the fact it doesn't have more of a class list. However, that may be since all classes are balanced and ready to play from the start, which they do seem to be after trying most of them.
I quit Everquest 2 because my class was an awful gimp due to bad design. I also quit WoW because they nerfed my Hunter and Mage into oblivion, turning them into a shadow of what they once were. Fair enough they're both BETTER classes now, but that was after 6+ months of waiting? Glad that wasn't me waiting for bad developers.
LOTRO will be a great game and the only real competition I see upcoming to it is Warhammer Online, since Mythic are hyping it up so much.
You know why WoW has so many subscribers? It has no competition. This is the first bit of competition that has been presented to it in over 2 years, and I expect to see alot of the players drifting away from it due to severe boredom. Most people I talk to who still play say they're bored but stay due to nothing else.
Started playing it last night. I am currently playing COH/COV (never leaving that), SWG and dabble a bit in Guild Wars. Had a pretty good time grinding up to Lvl. 6 last night. The graphics were really nice but did remind me of WOW. According to some of the other posters the world should be more open so going to give it another run tonight before I pass final judgment. What I have done so far has been entertaining but not worth a sub, yet.

I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan. I don't have some crush on Legolas (though being a straight male... that would be awkward) and i'm certainly not an owner of the ultra collectors edition. Star Wars is my game. I like Sci-Fi not fantasy! However, with the recent lack of games to play... especially MMOs that appealed to me. I was desperate and joined the beta for something to do.
I like this game. Truly i do. Theres alot to do for those who just don't want to quest and if you can stand a mild grind session for a bit of cash and a title.. then its pretty fun! The community so far in beta is fantastic. Few are nicer. Its even got a barrens chat! Go figure! people are helpful and kind to you when they're not grinding away unaware of chat.
The system is simple and quick to pick up. The graphics? Not bad! I've seen worse of course and they're up to par with today's technology vs this morning's computers. No ones left in the dark in way of performance other than a few lag spikes on the lower end machines or those using laptops running on 56k.
I'm ashamed to have bashed the game so much before trying it. its got good promise and will probably hold my time over until Tabula Rasa.
