    A vote for the underdog.

    Age of Conan.

Everyone who has played WoW in the MMO market will tire of LotR:O quickly. That's a lot of people.

Ditto, and everyone that is tired of all other MMOs will finally have a taste of some original gameplay with AoC.

WoW will continue to be top dog for who knows how long

-Turbines track record isn't that great since AC (lotro will do good though I am sure, but I don't expect "WoW" good)-

-War has a while to go still, not even beta yet I don't think (time will tell, since its still just on paper features (outside what videos and screens have been released)

Just to clarify, WAR is currently in Friends and Family style Beta testing I believe. I know I've read it here or there in different articles recently, just too lazy to hunt them down at the moment.

OOOOKKKK dude what battle??? LOTRO wont be in the batlle and once Age of conan and warhammer online comes out world of warcraft will lose TOOOONNNNSSS of people so the ONLY war in '07 is Age of conan Vs. Warhammer Online.

well lotro will do ok just because its LOTR and it will automaticall have a fan base but i think that will demish all but the hardcore players once AoC and WAR comes out!

WoW,  neither of those will come close to WoW's subscribtion numbers.

Only thing that will kill WoW is Blizzard. Or time itself. And even then, time will be a ways off.

LotRO will do well on box sales, slip a bit at the 30 day mark, and really take a big hit at the 90 day mark when Turbine drops the ball on delivering enough content to keep the players busy for more than a day or two.

As for WAR vs AoC, I think WAR will end up with better numbers strictly from IP. Neither Mythic, nor FC have a flawless track record, but of the two, I'd say Mythic is better.

AoC looks all purdy, and whatnot, but as VG has proven, being the Britney Spears(all looks and nothing under the hood, for those not getting it) of the MMO world != a win. I'm still waiting for VG to hit the "accidentally" flashing it's gash for publicity stage. If the game requires a high end system, and still runs poorly, or lags a lot during pvp, it'll be deader than a doornail if WAR can put out a technically sound game.

It's apples and oranges.  The games are in no way competing for the same player base.  WoW was designed to appeal to every time of MMO player.  It has a very friendly learning curve.  It has a wide variety of PvP options.  It has substantial PvE content.  And it's designed to run on less than stellar gaming rigs.  It was created to have a little something for everyone.

LotRO is a much more specialized game.  It is designed for players who want to delve into Tolkien's Middle Earth in primarily a PvE sytle game.  This game has never been billed as "for everyone".  Hardcore PvP players (gankers) need not apply.  Non Tolkien fans need not apply.

Just because The Happy Sumo sushi restaurant doesn't draw the sales numbers of McDonalds or Burger King doesn't mean the menu is any lower quality.  WoW will continue to top the charts in terms of numbers of subscribers for some time to come.  Even other niche games like AoC and WAR will not come close to the player base Blizzard has built up.  However, that doesn't mean one game is any better than another.  Personally, i'd be more than happy to leave the majority of the WoW PvP crowd to thier own devices while I enjoy myself in LotRO.

The most important part of reading is reading between the lines.

The battle is between WAR and AoC.

WoW doesn't count because even if all of the asians and hardcore mmoer's left, that'd still leave well over a million xbox/ps2(3 doesnt count yet, no games) kids whose only comp game is WoW.

So its really a battle for second, unless some great shake-up occurs ( OP'ed Panda race causes all to quit WoW).

proof it. its very unlikely, since Warcraft has always been popular on PC gaming, never on consoles.

Well I think PotBS will be the most fun of the new mmorpgs (at least for me) but as far as subscription numbers go it'll probably be LOTRo or maybe WoW will continue with the highest subscriptions a bit longer.  I would like to see AoC do really well, and it might, but I dont have high hopes.

WAR has a lot of hype around these boards, but most of the WAR fans wont like WARs transition into MMO, and the mmo playing masses wont be pulled away from WoW or LOTRo to care for WAR.  I just dont see WAR doing amazingly well.

Age of Conan will be the next game ofcourse..

Why isnt that game in the poll ?

  • ComanComan Member UncommonPosts: 2,178
I predict an late 2007 release for Fallen Earth. (Or early 2008). This game will get a lot of poeple to play it, not sure if it will really harm the current top-dog. I belive this game will attract an other type of gamer that plays WoW.

No game will win this "war". Basically It's going to go like this

Lord Of the Rings comes out. A lot of people play it and leave WoW.

WAR comes out. A lot of people play it and leave LOTR:O

Age of Conan comes out. A lot of people play it and leave WAR.

Continue till MMO games become original again.

AoC will be home to the die hard PVP fans ( which sadly will mean it will probably have less subcriptions). In all honesty though, if you judge whether you like a game by subscription numbers, you arent a true gamer.
