You havent logged in for almost 2 months now, judging a game that is in closed beta ......
So I can pretty much rule you out as any type pf authority on LoTRO .
And its even sadder to see that nothing has changed much based on the bad critics this game is getting here from other players.
What are you talking about "bad critics." Is there some imaginary thread saying how aweful this game is , or some spineless troll just making shite up ? I would have to say 1out of 50 threads here are speaking bad of the game. Compared to Vanguard where 50 to 1 are speaking bad. Dude , even Vanguard Devs are admitting the game is flawed and crap ??? but here youare waving your rainbow flag of senseless flaming with no proof of your accusations. Please by all means go back to Vanguard, and be an elitest, I am happy to chill with regular folk in LotRO.
Why are you refering to Vanguard, Vanguard is not that great, its nothing special.
Concerning LOTRO, No problem here are some random links (enjoy):
Yeah, LOTRO sux, we get it, we are suckers, losers and PvE carebears!!
Carebears i really think so REALLY yeah for carebears.
that's it exactly
And was surprised to see.. that..
Most of LOTRO fans talked with, told me they couldn't play Pvp or Rvr even in LOTRO because it' was rude, hard, for "primitive" people (like me i suppose)
Was told that many and many times... Frightened by Pvp /in wow , by raids in wow etc etc etc... poor poor little players
(You can be sure i was told that many times and was surprised ! )
In fact it's harder to "fight" against another player in DAOC than killing a mob with 0 brain in Lotro for sure. Mobs waits for arrows... it's not hard You never die even if you jump from Weathertop, etc etc ... you dont' have to buy arrows lol never saw that on a RPG... never.
THINK ABOUT ULTIMA !!!
THINK ABOUT IT !!!
------------------------------
So i'm supposed to be a BARBARIAN
(lol) YES I AM.No prb
Gonna have fun with DAOC WAR and maybe AOC (why not Ultima Online afterall ?)
Lotro is a lite rpg for Newbies, lower levl even than WOW.
Nice game, nice screenshots
but not a real RPG , this is not Ultima this is not DAOC this is not even WOW
It's a lite clone of wow
Wowlite for newbies.
have good fun.
but it's not for me.
I'm not clever enough for this game for sure
------------------------------------
Returning TO BARBARIAN GAMES (as Wargames, Waterloo,Gettysburg, Chess, GO etc: player against player...)
And you're going to have fun with your very high intellectual levl game (everyone knows a mob has a high AI, tactics, strategic etc... very interesting)
Hasta la vista babies/
All is perfect.

Never say to a Lotro fan Lotro is a little wow clone. (forgot it once more)

Carebears or Careboars ?
And never forget to save the Middle Earth, heroes That is by far the funniest thread to date .
I printed it out and framed it , just blows my mind
Difference between you and me : you are serious, not me . I don't care about a game.
Marketing has No effect on me. No effect at all.
That's the difference. when a game is nice i take it, when it's not nice or boring even if it's called a "must have" (HAHA) i don't take it.
+ Most of all, Lotro fans talked with : too serious for me, thinkin tolkien was The MASTER, and Trilogy the Bible and "worked" their character seriously. (LOL yeah it's serious) you can take a look to many european fora, it's funny.
ô tempora ô mores
---------------------------
All things I said about lotro are real and precise with ex.
in 6 months, lotro 'll be forgotten by 90% of actual players.
In 1 year, even fanboys, tired of always being in Hobbitburg
Tolkien wasn't a bad writer, and he sure spun out a pretty complete world...
But turning it into a bible is certainly just the usual herd drive of people following some trend. If you aren't moslem, or christian, I guess you can just get fanatic over Tolkien, just so long you can all get fanatic about something...
I enjoyed reading Tolkien, but I got better books in my library, with worlds that lend themselves much better to make mmorpgs... take Jack Vance for example.
But whatever, I'm just waiting for an mmorpg that isn't sanitized for the 13 year olds, and where skill counts for something too.
In Blade of Darkness, you could chop off a head or an arm, and the blood would gush out from the collapsing enemy, running down the nearby walls it splattered on

Carebears or Careboars ?
And never forget to save the Middle Earth, heroes
Real RPG = Role Playing...and that is "teh gay", eh?
And such sportsmanlike behaviour from a PvP'er, I thought you guys (the special elite) are comparing PvP to sports...why not behave in sportsmanlike manner then? Why the childish and derogatory terms? Do you really think people are "frightened" by PvP? Or it just makes you feel better about yourself? Think of a better word than "frightened"....
Besides, aside from FPS/RTS games, the only online game (avoiding MMO term here) out there requiring both skill and intellectual pondering is Guild Wars which is universally hated by the "MMO crowds" - you know, no items, armors, levels, anything, just skill and builds....which I also quit because of lack of sportsmanship behavior - you know, sore losers and sore winners, I'm sure you know the kind. I avoid such people in RL (chess for example) regardless of skill because they get me angry ...
So, on the other hand, why not consider a game with a leisure approach, a place where you can relax? I'm really tired of "scrub stomping", so I do hope LOTRO will be a leisure and peaceful place, free of all the competing testosterone.

of course
Don't need killing and bashing
i HATE bashing that's the point, stopped wow because of bashing and now we have the same product ?
Thought could play a Hobbit only living in a Hobbit's Hole and making cakes !
Thought could play a non warrior (SWG = entertainer. )
Thought could play ALSO a Warrior of Gondor , a horseman of Rohan ...
But in lotro all classes are fighters: Even the Minstrel kills , and he kills when he sings (nice singer )
Masterof knowledge kills with balls of fire... do you need an exe of Lore Master in LOTR ? Father of Boromir and Faramir says to Gandalf "i 'm the Master of kno... of Minas Tirith"
The only thing we can/must do is killing killing killing and most of time, animals. Not even orcs.
This is not the War of the Ring but the War of Humanoids against animals
Where's the leisure when you kill 24 awful spiders ? Nowhere.
It's a nightmare that's all . awfull and awful spiders in Archet chetwood then lonelands then Shire then oldforest then north etc... !!!
Your char is attacked by GIANT flies, etc etc etc ...
this is Starship Troopers !
The only thing interesting in LOTRO: some places really beautiful or cool (ShireGreat barrow downs Old Forest Trollshaws and Thorin)
Bree combe archet Lone lands misty mountains Fornost Estendil Osthrikar even Rivendell and most part of Angmar are boring. no interest at all.
And we don't have the most important of Lord of the Ring: Moria Minas Tirith Helm's Deep etc...
Against of Minas Tirith we have Archet and Bree, great great, you can create a heros called MMO2007 Of the Rohan but he starts at Archet ...
MMO2007 of Rohan [ without a horse and coming from Archet]
and Spiders Slayer
YEAAAAAAH
Or MMO2007 The Wary
great.
that's what i call Lord of The Rings and a Hero, a threat for Sauron and Witch King !
-----------------------
Some people could say we '" re going to have probably Gondor in 1/2 years
OK hope so... Hope it's not going to be only a High level place this could be ridiculous.... IN Minas Tirith you have Faramir but also "non heroes" , children, etc...
The 1rst /only MMO in Middle Earth we have
------------------
" Dude it's Turbine. They suck at translating IPs, just look at DDO. I wouldn't buy or play this game, even if it was free...."
-------------------
lol. In europe we had 2 stress tests.
1rst has been a disaster.
So , and even if I started beta before ST, couldn't connect anymore to Northmoor (wasn't alone )
Decided to discover DDO /Trial
Worst mmo never tried. Tried and deleted it in 2H /
This one is for all the LOTRO haters , because we LOTRO fans love you - and belive you are hundred percent entitled to your oppinion!!!
If you hate LOTRO but are not sure how much you hate it, you are welcome to free for all open beta test ...
And just because i know how much you have to express your feelings - here is a short FAQ to LOTRO flaws
LOTRO uses the same engine as DDO
- Well they are done by the same company. It is logical that company will cut development time in half by sparing themselves
from having to make yet another game engine. And thus concentrate on content. So yes everyone knows LOTRO uses same
engine. To its great benefit , i might add
LOTRO leveling is to slow
- Oh what a shame ! LOTRO quests are boring
- Just as boring as quests in any other MMO ever. You are right, it is time for a change. And i advice you not to play any
MMO until the one with interesting quests comes out ! See you in 20 years.. LOTRO combat is boring
- Again you are right. To bad it could not be more like CSS or God of War. Again , i advice you to wait for MMO with interesting
combat...see you in 25 years LOTRO has to less character customisation
-Righto , almost as less as every other MMO LOTRO has boring classes
-Yup ... very borin indeed
And as this FAQ shows plainly LOTRO sucks. It sucks almost as badly as other MMOs in existance.
Or should i say - LOTRO is just a bit better than other MMOs on the market.
For some this will not be enough to play it. Fair enough
And others
See you in the game mates
1) Is this an FAQ or your attempt to be a troll? I think it's the ladder.
2) So when did Turbine pay you to start speaking for them? I think if people they don't need read un-intelligent FAQ created by teenager with fascist views. What someone says about a game is there business, you have no right to be basing people or criticize people because they have have opinion about the game you don't like to read.
I have a key for the LOTR beta but actually I'm having trouble motivating myself to try it. This is not because LOTR is a bad game but because of something Rattrap completely missed. Lord of the Rings is the single most influential work of fantasy ever. It was crafted with so much love and dedication that it is almost impossible to recreate. The movies come very close in capturing the atmosphere and flavour of Tolkien's universe but due to the nature of the media the emphasis has to be on the action, not on descriptions and details. Even so, Peter Jackson came very close and the trilogy is among my favourite series of movies.
LOTR Online however has a chance of taking all the action from the movie and add the details from the books. It's not only about creating a great MMORPG but about creating the experience from the books. If they don't do it and go for the quick money you get a product like D&D Online which is nice in itself but doesn't create the feel of D&D or Star Wars Galaxies which has the same problem. Games that are based on big names like LOTR, SW, ST and so on should pay extra attention to details or be doomed to fail. Diverting from the (daunting) task of recreating Middle Earth by situating the game in another area is no excuse to produce a mediocre game.
What Rattrap is saying is that it's okay to make LOTR mediocre because most other games are even more mediocre. That's similar to saying that it's okay to make a bland unexciting car because most other cars are bland and unexciting too. LOTR however, is the Rolls Royce of books. An MMORPG with such a pedigree deserves to be made with the same standards. Anything less just won't do, might make a quick buck by using the name but is ultimately doomed to fail.

The beauty of something is based on the love and comfort that was put into it and the love and comfort it gives back. If something is bland or mediocre, it's because there was no love or care put into it. That being said, if LotRO is mediocre game then it says a lot about what Turbine and their love (or lack there of) for game development.
Rattrap is merely trying to eliminate criticism and prejudice by applying the same idealism and logics that have been said about LotRO to other games. Sadly, he/she insults the readers by dumbing down their opinions with baseless assumptions, generalizations and vague preference to other games. Moreover, preventing gaming prejudice can't be done since most people judge games by the companies they are associated with, not the game itself. And looking Turbine's record for making good games, making fun games and games with new ideas, you can see why people are quick to judge the game so quickly.

Exactly
Played more than 4 months in Lotro, what can I say ?
The places where you can recognize Tolkien's books and stories: are in the same zone:
- The Shire is PERFECT absolutely PERFECT but quests are for low levels...Max levl 12. And imo we can't stay 6 months only in the Shire because there's nothing to do except walking
- Old forest (if you can forget spiders wolves and bears ): great idea, there's also Tom Bombadill , missing in PJ movies
. Trees are simply great and impressive, GOOD WORK
- Barrow Downs (specially Great BD)
Even Bruinen looks poor. Without the name you can't recognize it. etc, Rivendell is boring, you'll have to do nothing there...
If you want to see the Shire, try LOTRO. It's really PERFECT
But don't expect anything else. It's sad but it's the Truth.
Try it, look at The Shire and some places, that's all. Imo Turbine made a hard work for the shire (20/20 GREAT) and fast work for Bree etc... Even Prancing Pony Inn is boring. Don't think about the movie when you go to PP, you'll be disappointed.

Pray now for YOUR game because he needs help if dev doesn't propose more than Eriador in october.
LOTRO can survive in 2007-2008 only if Stargate Age of Conan Warhammer Online and so on are very very bad games.
Pray for him if you want to see the Moria, Caras, Helm's Deep, Fangorn or the Harad...

This is exactly what i tried to say
We shall all be clear about one thing - LOTRO is nothing special
It is surely not "the perfect" MMO everyone is looking for. And actually everyone that is bashing LOTRO , criticises it for not being
"the dream mmo"
This is foolish. And the reason why i made the FAQ
Not every game should reinvent the weel , and LOTRO is not trying to do that. Turbine made attempt on making very polished , fun game ( leaning toward casual ) - and they succeded at that. It is not a passion fruit , it is a simple apple. But tasty apple.
I also definetly agree with you that there could be much much more done with LOTR licence. And it is sad it was wasted this way.
But look at the bright side
At least it is not turned into big steaming pile of horse womit like D&D licence was !

MMO2007 and Erik066 both of your posts are very good. Nice to see some constructive posts here, instead of extremest kind of fans which nuke any criticism. Erik066, you are right this game does not reflect the impact which tolkiens books have had on the whole fantasy genre. PJ tried to tackle this challenge with respect to the movie media, ie reflecting the books, advancing them in their true nature and safeguarding ROI at the same time. While the movies were financially a big fat cash cow, opinions might be split if the books were true to the nature of the books. (IMO, I know some will flame me, but the movies were in some specific ways better, eg the character of Gandalf falls out of his role in the books, the movie character is more "robust"). Turbine has experience with failure (AC2, DDO) and success (AC1). They have good experience&technical background (if the have the ability to learn from mistakes, engine of AC2) and financial backup. What they produced IMO is something which really is only a small glimps of what should have been produced. LOTRO is (lets think it has nothing to do with LOTR) a good, polished, easy on mind and hardware mmorpg. They have concentrated on the initial gaming experience but have neglected the long-term perspective of the game.
This is picked up in MO2007's post. His four months of experience truely underlines my experiences and opinions which I have made two months ago during beta. And it hasnt changed as it seems (Im DL the client again of LOTRO to see myself).
Opened an account for a last try ( 10 days) yesterday
Can't do it, starting in Archet : must kill wolves boars and spiders 1H of gaming can't play. It's enough.
Going to play "BFME Rise of With King" (even Fornost is much better in BFME II than in Lotro)...
---------
When I was taken in the closed beta in dec 2006 (before Christmas) I was really happy. Thought i had "my " mmo... but 15 days after, understood Lotro wasn't more than few nice areas.
Tried and tried and tried to give a chance to lotro. But it's impossible. Tried 4 months to give it a chance. It's enough.
Last Hope ? (you know i always try to give this game a chance ! )

Sorry for my english.
I wouldn't go as far, mate - although I do know what you're getting at.
So, I'll just add what areas are done superbly here IMHO...
- Barrows (area and instance)
- Shire
- Bree (yes I do think so, it's got the right "feel" but that's me)
- Fields of Fornost
- Dol Dinen also feels right
- Weathertop
- Thorin's Hall
- Old Forest (but now it's dumbed down a bit so I don't actually like it quite as much)
Ok, some less stellar areas:
- Lone Lands in general
- Garth Aragwen is quite a bore for me
- yeah, Ford of Bruinen is not much
- umm...that's it?
Other's are solid, like Bree-fields, North Downs, Threstlebridge and Esteldin. Only been in Angmar as a "tourist" so I can't really comment but it sure got the right atmosphere, if only by first glance.
What this game IS missing is the higher level content. I was stuck at lvl 34 because I hate grinding and all I've got left were fellowship quests and I have a feeling all of them combined wouldn't get me past 35. Also, you can't really say it does not bring the atmosphere of books because areas described in books are done with great care (like Barrows and Old forest and Shire). So yeah, I'm definitely not really satisfied with amount of content on release, but I have confidence in the future...the engine is great, the skills are much more responsive now (still cannot compare to 1/4 secs Guild Wars interrupts lol but that's not that kind of game).
The amount of "kill xy" is just about right now (reduced), I'm not sure how to avoid such quests entirely, but I usually do them offhandedly while exploring and not putting much effort into it...yeah, too much animal killing for my (and Tolkien's I suppose) liking but you can't have orcs everywhere. Come to think of it, all I really want is devs making their best...and that's what they did...also the "WoW clone" arguments...no matter that WOW copied other predecessors...they simply used good and sturdy mechanisms so you can focus more on exploring etc...this is not a hardcore game and that is just what I need - familiar UI, simple tactics etc. Sure, I'll play AoC for sieges, formation combat, mounted combat etc...but I'll play LOTRO when I don't want any competitive spirit for the evening, just beautiful visages and nicely written quests.
We'll see what future brings, I'm content for now. I don't absolutely need 100% innovation in every game I play or I would still be playing UFO:Enemy Unknown, Fallout 2 etc....strictly IMHO, of course.
And finally, I'm glad we're having a civilized conversation which seems to come rare this days...
...snip... Erik066, you are right this game does not reflect the impact which tolkiens books have had on the whole fantasy genre.
...snip
A quick thought on that....other fantasy games/books made orcs, gobos, dwarfs and elves into cliche long long ago...so even if you do play in Tolkien's world, it all seems familiar and cliche from the many many games and books that copied Tolkien's bestiary etc. I mean, what RPG game does not have orcs in them? And what game has more right to have them than based on LOTR? And when you do combat orcs...it's OMG oh no orcs....again!
- Shame Turbine for recycling perfectly functional 3d rendering engine
LOTRO leveling is to slow
- Oh what a shame ! You need to jump at least 100 exp levels for single kill !
LOTRO quests are boring
- Just as boring as quests in any other MMO ever. You are right, it is time for a change. And i advice you not to play any

-Yup ... very borin indeed
Seriously now. I had to edit the original post because people were understanding it all wrong. I was bit ironical , but what i want to say is simple:
If you are looking for the MMO to kill all MMO's , you are looking at the wrong place.
And if you are hating LOTRO for not being that perfect MMO you are wasting your time. Just move on to anticipating WAR or AOC.
Not every game should reinvent the weel , and LOTRO is not trying to do that. Turbine made attempt on making very polished , fun game ( leaning toward casual ) - and they succeded at that. It is not a passion fruit , it is a simple apple. But tasty apple.
I made this FAQ to show that all (well most) criticism haters have toward this game are valid. But it doesnt change the fact LOTRO is very fun and enjoyable game.
At least for me that is a valid reason for playing it
First, it's a very fun and enjoyable game...to YOU! Which, I am happy for, but it's not for everyone.
Second, "Almost as less" is not proper english. Don't make me get out my red pen!
Come on people let's be honest here LOTRO brings absolutely nothing to the MMORPG scence; no innovation none same old shit just hoping to capitalize on Blizzards success. LOTRO is a filler game, the only good thing about this steaming pile is that it will draw a few new people to the MMO scene.
Many people think the game is finished, Turbine makes a mockery of LOTR; the world is small too small. If Turbine was truley abitious about their project they would include Gondor, Rohan and Mordor in the beginning and make the evil races playable as well as allowing faction pvp between the evil and good races but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, instead we get less then 10% of what LOTRO could have been.
It's mind blowing to see people jumping on the bandwagon with a vague promise from Turbine that they will add lands and features, fanboys scream "This game has potential" where I see the lack there of. So I am supposed to play this steaming pile of shit because it has Potential?
This game is by no means epic, I hate when companies that do have the funding and the backing fail because instead of thinking big they think small.
I think this game has potential unlike Vanguard but its up to the DEV to make it happen. Reason why ppl enjoy the beta is b/c there really isnt much in the game so the DEV have less bugs to work out but it will get boring when u hit 50 and realize there isnt much to do after that.
Maybe this game has a potential but for the moment (Took keys for 10 days not box for the moment)
- Fr serv. Sirannor (non RP) = few people playing, really few . In most of areas i'm alone !
- Don't know if XP has been boosted in the beta (BT since december 2006) but in some hours , my char = lvl 16. Most of players reached this lvl yesterday and more (17/18) .
Already finished all quests in Archet Combe and some of Bree. Finished Adso's quets, all alone.. Finished quests alone in Barrow Downs now must find a grp for Great Barrow Downs and Cardolan (yeah made all the others alone ^^ and fast !)
I'm not sure could play more than 1 month even with a "normal XP" . Even now this game is very easy and "fast play", easier than wow. Tried with another char only lvl 6 /captain. This char reached Aughaire without being attacked more than 1 time (not even killed) by a Warg near Angmar. / French magazines says there's not enough content... (Joystick and Canard PC JV.Com)
that's all. Nice areas but small, not enough places of LOTR. Wow clone, that's what they say. (all of them)
Comments

I vote for "Good gameplay but visually dissapointing" as best whine by far....a blindman's whine at that!
who me ?
that's it exactly

I printed it out and framed it , just blows my mind
who me ?
In 1 year, even fanboys, tired of always being in Hobbitburg
will be happy to play on complete games.
you know that i know that turbine knows that
bye.
In Blade of Darkness, you could chop off a head or an arm, and the blood would gush out from the collapsing enemy, running down the nearby walls it splattered on
that's it exactly
And was surprised to see.. that..

" quick to judge the game so quickly"
4 months 1/2

So quickly you said ? really?
+ played Lotro with books (not only LOTR...) in my hands...at the same time.
As all lotrofans you can say nothing. You have nothing to say only "that"s a troll" or a flamming. You have something to say. NOTHING. Except " quick to judge the game so quickly" . this is NOTHING.
Pray now for YOUR game because he needs help if dev doesn't propose more than Eriador in october.
LOTRO can survive in 2007-2008 only if Stargate Age of Conan Warhammer Online and so on are very very bad games.
Pray for him if you want to see the Moria, Caras, Helm's Deep, Fangorn or the Harad...
founder program = 6 months or for life... never saw that for a MMORPG, strange for MMORPG Tolkien based.
6 months : from BC to AOC/WAR

Dreaming now about a MMO created by EA/PJ Movies (they have this license)

Last Hope ? (you know i always try to give this game a chance ! )
LOTRO Dev Chat 12.04 in Germany... 21H CEST.
I don't hate Lotro. i'm sad that's all.

Sorry for my english.
First, it's a very fun and enjoyable game...to YOU! Which, I am happy for, but it's not for everyone.
Second, "Almost as less" is not proper english. Don't make me get out my red pen!
