Hype only 7.0?

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062
Just seems a little odd to me.  This is the most solid MMO I've ever been in and it's still in beta... and 90% of the people that play it seem to love it a lot and can't praise it enough... so do we have some malicious ppl downgrading the hype in vain attempts to make it seem lesser than it is?  To those people, please list your adresses below so that I may visit you.   Hehe I'm kidding but that is seriously lame... I for one changed my earlier hype from months ago from a 7 to a 10 because I'm flat out loving the game now.  It could be better yes, and it is getting better every day.... but am I hyped? OH yea.

Actually, declining hype ratings make sense when you think about it.  Hype is based on people's expectations about a game, and before they get a chance to actually try it we really don't know what its really going to be like.  So we set our expectations fairly high and hope for the best.  Now that LoTRO is close to release, almost anyone who was following the game has had a chance to at least check it out.

Obviously from other posts here in these forums LotRO doesn't meet the expectations of some folks.  They might have been looking for a more immersive LorTR experience (i.e. middle-earth simulation) or perhaps to participate in the epic battles described in the book/movie..and are disappointed that this won't be happening.

They also might have been looking for something new, full of innovation... I like LotRO..and I won't go so far as to say its much different that those games that came before it... except...at release it is more polished than any I've ever witnessed or heard about.  It may not set the bar in many areas...but performance at release it pretty much beats any game out there.

So sure, the hype meter will go down now that people have something to base their opinion on.  But what really matters isn't what the ratings settle at after launch... but how many people chose to play the game and pay a subscription fee. The game's ultimate success depends on signing and more importantly, retaining new customers.

Sure, some folks might have gone out and set their ratings to zero... and they were being disingenuous.  Truthfully, you rating the game a 10 probably was much the same... LotRO is a good game and fun to play, but 10's should be reserved for legendary games... and in fact, that standard probably will never be met.

But...hey, its just an opinion poll...so let folks have their fun...

I had high expectations at first. I gave it 9 or something but now it's more closer to 2-3, Lotro has really been disappointing experience for me.

It is just a pointless hype meter. 20% of the people are honest, and the other 80% vote it a 10 or a 1.

It's called hype for a reason , it is what people expect it to be since not many can beta. That said look wich games surround LOTR in the hype corner then i'd say it is fairly high up the ranks.

When it's released THEN the actuall gameplay itself plays a part as well as customer service , bugs, addons blablabla.Till then it's mostly based on what they promised for the game to be andhow cute the graphix look. That's also why i never hype a game and why i don't look at the hype number they get. They are mostly based on air.....

Very well said my friend.  I gave it a 10 based on my HYPE however, not overall 'review' of the game.  I KNOW that it's not legendary.  I'm quite aware of the gamestate.  But I am VERY VERY Hyped about the game, thus a 10 from me.  Now if we were allowed to vote on the actual review scores of a game, that would be very different.  I'm hoping that Turbing made the right choice as in developing a very STABLE game, and then adding all the features to our hearts' content later on -- Rather than the unfortunate way Vanguard went.  I was very eager for everything Vanguard aspired to be, but the game is obviously at least 2 years of development away from done imho

WoW isn't on the front page either...I wouldn't bother with the ratings based on that...why? Cause I'm a casual player...most people on mmorpg.com seem to be hardcore players. I don't want to play a hardcore game, which Eve was on the top for a long time until the devs were found to be cheating, but eve was too hardcore for me...

My point? Casual games won't do as well on mmorpg.com while the more hardcore games will.

Not only that, there exists a disproportionate amount of PvPers on MMORPG.com than is present in the MMO community at large. They tend to affect ratings negatively where PvP isn't to their liking.

You can't use the hype on this site for anything.

Look at the top 5 for released games.
