do not buy this game, square enix like to give out bogus registration codes, this is the second time ive bought final fantasy and the codes have not work also a friend of mines code didnt work either..stay clear of this game.
I'm guessing you are either buying it from a friend or buying it used. If you are buying it from the same store and it's not working stop going to that store. Order off Amazon.com and you will get working codes.
I played this game for about two years. I'm even going to come back as soon as I upgrade my PC. One thing to warn other people about is time consumption. If you really want to take this game seriously you need to make sure you have the time to put aside for it. The community is one thing thats easy to pull you in. A lot of games are full of people out to lolgankgankgank. PvP, while it does exist, is not a major part of the game. Right from the getgo you'll notice that when you ask for help people usually won't laugh at you and call you names. More often than not you'll get the help you need and then some. Now, if you go off shouting over and over that tends to get a bad response.
I just bought this game like a month ago and my product key works fine you are probably not entering the key in right...This game is a very good game and have not had any problems yet....
I also had a problem at first.. there are a bunch of codes that come with this game lol... but after reading the booklet that came with it I figured it out. Been playing for over a year. I love FFXI!!

I tried this game a few years back and the community was the worse I've ever encountered. Your right about one thing, people usually don't laugh at you.. they just ignore you completely. I was actually thinking about loading it up just for the hell of it since I'm bored with everything else.
But I read this in the manual that came with it talking about if it's been over 3 months since you unsubscribed from Playonline(not sure if I did or not)..anyway "After this three-month period has elapsed, you can no longer use your previous account information. You must create a new account to use PlayOnline again. Please note that this means you must purchase a new copy of the software from a retailer and reregister for PlayOnline."
It blows my mind that they would make you buy the software again. I bet they don't get too many returning customers.
Not true JT, I stopped playing FFXI for well over 3 months (I would even say almost a year) and when I went back sure enough, my Elf was still there on Fairy. Same amount of gil, jobs, everything. I wasn't billed for anything but for the 2 months I played for again before quiting it again because the grind is quite bad imo.
I never had a problem with any CD or game account Keys in my life, so it must have been some flukes. Maybe the keys were so old they got recyled or bumped out of the system. It's kind of hard to get into FFXI for me, not really my style. If the grind was a little less harsh (lv10 or so you have to group in order to progress) I would love it.
I think you may have bought used copies and the store may have sold ya the game as new, if that is not the case then im baffled.
There have been instances that even big chain stores will repack an online game even though they should, the people who usually work there donk have a freaking clue that an Online game w keys isnt the same as a regular game.

Well I may mess around with it again. I only played it a few months the first and I got the same impression you did. I'm not that concerned of whether my toon is still there because I didn't make it too far in levels. That quote was from their manual and on their website, so I wasn't sure if they would really do that or not.

My experiences are the complete opposite. I love the FFXI community, mature nice ppl, willing to help with most you ask about. FFXI and EQ2 has the best communities of all MMOs I've ever played.
In general, there are 3 kinds of players I've seen ignored most of the times:
Gil beggars
Those who expect any high lvl whm to drop everything to powerlvl them just because they are too lazy to lvl the normal way.
Low lvls who expect high-lvls to camp NMs, or doing anything similar, so they can get the rewards with little/no effort
Of course, as in ALL MMOs, there are also rude ppl who will be ignored, but there's far fewer of such ppl in FFXI than any other games I've played. My advice for you is, find a good linkshell (FFXI's guild), and if you aren't satisfied, drop it and find another. Most linkshells are full of ppl willing to help.
OP:
I can't understand why you have that problem. Did you buy used copies? I've never had such problems, not with FFXI, not with any game.

=/ Worst Community? You really must not have played many MMOs, FFXI has probably one of the best communities out of all the MMO's ive played, sure, there are a few immature players on the game, but well thats gunna happen regardless, but for the most part everyone is really mature and helpful =/
and also, you can get your account back after 3months, they do not delete you account info at all, you can always get it back, you just cannot reactivate from PoL and must instead call up SE and talk to a rep. The reason they clear it after 3 months is to free up space on the servers.
And also <.< i know quite a few people who have quit XI for ne where from a few months to a few years, and they've come back >.>
so all in all, i think you need to do a little more research before you decide to try and put down an MMO =P

Not really sure where I put down the game... I did state that the community was the worst I've seen. I never could get help with just basic questions. I'm 42 years old, so I don't spam chat for money or such. I hate it when people do that. Saw that in DAOC a lot.
As for how many MMO's I've played....just looking to the left where it shows the list of released games.. I have played 29 of those listed. I also beta test almost everyone one of those. Also, maybe you didn't catch this.. but my statement about the 3 months is directly out of their manual for the game and from their FAQ's from their website. That's research enough for me. Maybe you should pay more attention to the post before putting me down. Your a prime example of the community I dealt with when playing.

Wrong.
The info in the manual is OUTDATED! Every active FFXI player has access to more accurate/updated info via the POL viewer (content ID section, is the correct one for this, I think). If you don't delete your CHARACTERS, but only de-activate your account, the characters are now available more than 3 months. It's either 6 or 12 months - I'm too lazy to check now. And they actually don't delete it after that period, at least they didn't. The "returning adventurer campaign" last spring proved that.
Keep up this attitude as you show in the last sentense I'm quoting, and you WILL be ignored, no matter which game you play. You say you are 42 years old... well, you understand what I mean.

Hmm.. I have to agree.. sounds to me that either you got a pre-owned copy or were putting in the codes incorrectly - or putting the codes in the wrong places.
I've installed the game from scratch, registering all the codes, twice... including expansions. Never a problem. Over 500k active players have done the same over the past 4-5 years since it was released. A good friend of mine just bought a new subscription and got in just fine.
Not saying it's absolutely your fault; there could be a number of things it could be. but something is definitely screwy at your end if you had that problem.

That's the whole reason I was asking, Net. The "outdated" manual states they don't and their "up to date" website states the same thing. So I am not wrong, but their website apparently is. I expected a better reply from you Net, since I felt your first reply to me was very civil. T-o-h-m-a accused me of putting the game down, which I didn't. That was the purpose of my statement toward T-o-h-m-a. I did have a bad experience with the community on the server I played on, maybe you guys were lucky enough to be on a server with a good community. Keep in mind, I am not the OP who "was" putting the game down. I enjoyed the game while I was playing, it was just hard to find anyone who wanted to group. Next time, I'll be sure to start my own post, just in case people are confusing me with the OP.
Oh well, doesn't matter anyway. I don't remember my playonline id and I can't find any information on how to recover it and the "outdated" manual says I have to create a new account by buying a new copy. Unless someone here is helpful enough to point me in the right direction where it says I can recover my ID.
If you contact the support line they can give you the playonline ID as long as you can provide the proper billing information they have on file. I started playing FFXI when it first came out in Japan then put it down for about a year. I had no problem coming back at all... as for the community... it's the best I have ever experienced... my linkshell and the general population will never be topped.

I played this game awhile back and hated it. I think I gave it too my dog to eats.

Thank you Estya. I don't remember the linkshell, but if I'm able to get back in game I will surely look into it.
