i'm worried people are starting to overhype it too much, worried that when the game comes out it won't be everything everyone keeps saying it is, i mean is there even a beta yet?

so what do you all think, is there too much hype going on? is that a good thing or bad thing?

The more hype the better, after all LotRO an d AOC are gettign hyped also, for what .. alot less than WAR offers (i like AOC combat system ... or the idea of it not sure if i want to move my mouse, numpad as much as they do but.. interactive = good)

I can remeber day one of DAOC, the game needed help thast for sure, but you know what .... it was tons of fun at that time. Find peoples attack a camp of mobs etc.  That beign said everythign worked in the game , certain classes were unbalenced, delve info (discriptions) of many things were not done. But it seemed to work, that was a logn time ago tho.

Look at the vids etc that are being release, WAR looks good. If anythign it may coem out late i have no clue how they thought to make a game so fast, but it seems like they are getting it done.

Only 3 things can kill it, speed of combat (looks a bit suspect from vids) , the exping system flops (its new its different , no one is talkign about how it it but it really is. ps i hope you can grind off mobs like you could in daoc just if you want to), and finally classes don't work well in pvp (too unbalenced etc).

Out of these just the first oen seems a problem , the second maybe , but really i have seen nothign that indicates how much content there is for leveling etc. and i think classes will be fine, even when LA  + zerk was OP in daoc ... it was not too bad.

I believe the game is in a secret closed beta right now.

As for the hype...  I think this game will live up to it.  What I enjoy about the hype with this game is that it isnt just fans contributing to the hype.  There are plenty of people working on the project that *LOVE* Warhammer and I feel they are putting a lot of effort into making this game kick butt.  The hype will continue to grow as the game enters an open beta and approaches a release.  I am already enjoying the screenshots (heck even some of the screens from the alpha are better looking than some games released).  The *look* and *feel* of Warhammer seems to be being captured properly and that is one major thing the fans want to see.

I for one am looking forward to a fun fantasy-based MMO that has great lore and is focused on PvP/RvR.  These guys have it right.  No game that doesnt include a pvp/rvr type zone at the beginning of the game can say it is focused on pvp.  WAR will be.

I think some folks expectations are set a bit too high.... maybe because I've played DAOC for many years I know that Mythic is hardly the perfect game developer and realize that mistakes can and will be made.

I've really got no feel for how much impact EA might have on the group, and of course they answer somewhat to the franchise holder in terms of design and gameplay, and what comes out might surprise people.

Its all about expectations, I've seen folks who are hoping that this will be DAOC 2... and others who want it to mirror their Warhammer tabletop experience... I'm sure the game will fall somewhere in between these two and compromises will be made in order to create what the developers feel is a profitable game. (which usually alienates people when they don't get what they were hoping for)

    WoW Bow Down.

Blizz - a fledgling RPG company, more concerned about Nerfing a game to keep the masses happy, than it's actual playability.

GW - one of the longest standing, most innovative RPG companies out there.

    Enough said :)

    Can we get a "Ding-Ding-Ding"?

I think the main reason gamers have high hopes for WAR is that its being developed by a company who has over 5 years of live MMO experience under their belt.  Think about all Mythic has learned.  Mistakes will be made, but if you learn from them and don't repeat them then I wouldn't look at a mistake as a negative thing.

As for EA; I hope they are only the Sugar Daddy for Mythics vision.

Yes scalebane, you should be wary of over-hyping a game that has no track record as of yet.  All we know of the game is what the developers are allowing us to see.

It would be wise and prudent to keep the posts within the realm of questions about specifics of the game.

One should refrain from making assumptions based on very little actual first-hand knowledge.  Over-hyping and over-inflated expectations is what appears t have killed one of the games on the MMORPG forums, ( I will refrain from using the name of the game).  Most of us know which game this is.

I just think many young folks get tired and bored of their games after about a year or so and get a bit over-excited about the packaging of some of the up-coming games.

Just take heed, folks, don't get too over-excited about something that isn't even in Beta yet.

Well, Hype is a double edged sword. We really won't know until people start playing the game.  I agree, that every time I'm hyped I have a small feeling of "OMG! What If I'm let down?" That  goes with Super Smash Bros Brawl and Perfect World. I'm so uberly hyped about those games, and I know it. It'll depress me if they suck. The thing is I guess to be optimistic. Cause really thats all hype is. And a little bit never hurt anyone.

I have exact same opinion about WAR and AoC.  I say wait for OB, this is what I am doing, and try and ignore all the fanboys and haters.

I can't see Games Workshop  letting Mythic release a poor game, I would of thought GWS have a major say about  the in-game development.. I hope!!.. My only one concern is EA making the release date to early.. rushing any game has never been for the good.. Hopefully that won't be the case and EA have little or no say in any aspect of the game.. only  to give Mythic a large budget to play with.

Overhyping can be damaging to a game if it fails.. just look at what happened to Dark and Light.. more players to tell everyone else thats it a load of rubbish..

I can't see War failing to be honest Mythic have the experiance to make things right first time round.. but as with any MMO you expect a few niggles.

Agreed, until we can play any of them its all just speculation. However both AOC and WAR have potential, more so AOC imo though  The Warhammer videos recently released kinda put me off it some what...
  • EmmericEmmeric Member Posts: 54

Mythic had a great game in Daoc then ruined it slowly over the last 4 years....

I see the same thing happening with War ... if any other gamming company was putting it out i would buy it in an instant..

Mythic wont be getting anymore of my money

    Good point.

I dont belive WAR is throwing a hail mary and trying for a 10.There taking proven material and making an evolutionary game, not a revolutionary one. EA,emergent technologies,Mythic, a license.(lol,at this point gdw is such a bit player).it's a certain, calculated 8.5.any higher would just be icing on the cake.Im pretty confident mythic can enter gdw matreial into emergent technologies gamebryo 2.2 with money from the worlds largest game company.

come on this aint a manned mission to mars. They got this down to a simple process,it's a sure bet imo. if these 3 entities can't pull an 8.5 then all hope is lost and I guess well take up tennis or something.
  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726
Actually, parts of the game are revolutionary.

Stealth is being completely removed. This is a revolutionary step. No more rogues or stealth wars.

Long Duration Buffs are being removed. Buffsbots are gone.

All major forms of CC are being removed.

Collision Detection is being added to a PvP-centric game.

The first and last ones are revolutionary for sure. The buffbots are a needed removal from DAoC. The removal of major CC is a huge forward advancement.

  • HealforfoodHealforfood Member Posts: 57
removing what was in a previous game is revolutionanry?

And I hate to break it to War fans but CD has been out for quite some time,cov/coh off the top of my head.not to mention most shooters ,and even ultima online had a form of it.

I don't see anything revolutionary in war.its just mythics next step in gameing.

there's nothing there gambling on,its all pretty safe.no ground beaking physics engine(they out sourced the engine).

the cc thing never really pertained to gameplay, except to wipe noob grps w/o using any realm ability's.I could demezz my grp within 6-8s.

I prefere the safe approach, Mythic don't need to gamble.

possibly them exposing new players to pvp early to help expand the mmo pvp base is something I agree is revolutionary, not sure if anyone has done that before.but thats only a moderate risk gamble,i mean will a newb quit if he sees a live enemy at lvl 5,who knows.

I played Daoc 4years ,i am not knocking mythic.to the contrary I believe they are making the right desions and ide rather an 8.5 than a possible 6.which another game in developent, that is taking the oposite approach to WAR, will most likely wind up as.
  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726
Stealth has been a staple of MMOs as far back as EQ. The removal of it is a huge deal. You don't have to be gambling for something to be revolutionary.

If WAR is a big hit without stealth in a PvP game, it could bring about a radical change in how future MMOs are developed. They would be more inclined to also do without any stealth based classes.

And yes I know other games have collision detection. I said it was the first PvP-centric game with it. CoX isn't focused on PvP. It's a side addon that wasn't even in the game until it had been out for a while. Ultima Online also had PvP added at a later date, not on release. Many of the first person shooters I played used collision detection for different purposes and they gameplay is completely different. I'll concede they did have CD though. Not all of them do and the ones that don't suffer for it. CD is almost a requirement for a FPS game. So let me phrase it like this. WAR is the first PvP-centric MMO to include Collision Detection. EQ had it, but again, EQ was a PvE game with PvP tossed in on the side.

If WAR is successful, CD can become a staple of a good PvP MMO in the future. That's a revolutionary thing as far as I see it.

I think our difference of opinion is how we define revolutionary gameplay mechanics. If a gameplay feature is widely accepted and liked, it becomes a staple for future developers to include. I want stealth to be non-existent in my PvP based MMOs. Same with collision detection. It's a great feature and I want more games to bring it back.

SWG didn't have stealth....well until they gave Jedi's the invis thing that didn't work real well. It was still a fun game and had some huge PvP battles back before the CU.

Most people who want stealth fit into 2 categories: 1. They are scardycats that don't want to be ganked or 2. Don't want to fight unless they can win A.K.A. Ganking. If your afraid to die, DON'T PLAY. Mythic doesn't want you, it is a PVP game, learn to deal with it or don't play.

Am I excited about WAR? Yep

Am I over-hyping it? Nope, Mythic already has out 1 mmo so I know they can make the world/mechanics work the rest is just lore and fun aspects. Any game you play killing another player is ALWAYS fun, try and name a game where killing another person isn't fun? well maybe RFonline since it is more like potion popping war, but other than that. So I know it will be fun, even if just for a few months. 1 month of fun is well worth $50-$60 considering movies cost like $10 for 1-2hours.

  • HealforfoodHealforfood Member Posts: 57
hmmm, addy .I'll agree with you about cd in a credible mmo, dont consider it much more than something that was needed.but needed and negletected to the point of revolutionarry ,okay I bow in agreement. when you say taking out old school stealth(i hear there might be camo/concealment) that is new.Im curious to see visible archer classes.although this isnt the first mmo to do it ,I can't counter your credible adjective.so we got some significant gamble i didn't figure on.so the overall product will have more variance than I thought.say an 8-9 range vs  my previous solid 8.5.
  • healz4uhealz4u Member Posts: 1,065
I am to be honest a little too excited.

I was watching video of WAR on youtube, and they were illustrating a few game concepts that are very innovative and that make me extremely excited such as PvE/PvP integration;  ability to participate in a zone/server-wide quest and all receive rewards (LOVE THIS!).

People seem to forget that times have changed in the mmorpg market and like it or lump it blizzard made sure of that. If  you look at DAOC at the days leading up to release the marketing was no where near what it is for WAR.Any half serious developer knows that  you  probably get one chance in this unforgiving market to get it right before people are calling it vaporware.

Mythic are in this to win along with GW,they are fully aware of the legendary journey which lays before them.Look at any gaming website and you will see WAR leading the way.Everywhere you look in the mmorpg world  people are talking about WAR,some old followers and some new all waiting for something truly epic from Mythic.

The team know its now or never, there whole reputation is on the line.I can say that WAR wont be perfect but EVERYTHING i am seeing and hearing leads me to believe it will be damn close.

    WAR IS COMING

Another thing that leads to hype, imo, of coming mmo is people is tired of the current one's that they are playing and really looking forward to the next to renew their intrest...
