Who cares what these games are tagged as? I play DDO very happily which some people say is not an MMO in the sense that they perceive. Does it lessen my experience? No, of course not! I couldn't give a fuck if they called it a FPS, RTS or Driving game.
I don't think you can ever label anything as the best. I could say here and now that DDO is the best 'mmo' but I would immediately be challenged by the next person to post who would then say the game they play is the best and another challenge will come, it's ever decreasing circles.
It's like saying 'strawberry' is the best flavour in the world. It might be for you of course.
There is too much emphasis on what is the best etc. Find a game you like and play it, simple, don't worry about what other people on a website like this are playing.
All too true, We3ster. So many pple get hung up on what the 'best' game is they don't take the time to really look at the games out there, and set aside their preconceptions. Sure, I have my doubts on some games going in, but at least I try them. Why? Because I'm looking for a game that I enjoyed as much as I did DAOC/EQ.
One thing I'd like to add is simply this; statistics say that around 75% of a game's experience is decided by how good their social networks are. For me, I lead a very busy career, and so I have let many of my gaming friends fall by the wayside. As a result, many games that would normally be 'fun' for me, isn't because of the fact that I do not have anyone to adventure with. Believe me, having a friend or two to hang out with online makes a world of difference. (then again, there ARE some games that are just BAD!)
Once Guildwars has at least some zones that you can enter do quests, kill mobs with your group in which other groups are doing the same and also which other groups can enter and leave at anytime to do such then it probably could be considered MMORPG. Until that day comes it is no different than diablo2 and other similar games other than it has a graphical meeting chat room instead of a text one.
All I can do is laugh at people who say GW is for kiddies and that it isn't an MMO. The 3 campaigns are rated the highest on this site, so obviously the majority of people disagree with you.
Guild Wars, unlike your WoW or whatever, actually requires skill. There's no one running around to help you when this horrible lump of pixels called a mob starts chasing you. In Guild Wars you have to stick it out. You choose a specific build of skills and use that as best as you can. You don't press every button on our keyboard or hit a macro that fires off 20 spells.
All I can say is that jealousy makes you nasty and that I'm waiting in anticipation for Guild Wars 2 to come out. You trolls are going to have to come up with something completely original to bash it considering it's going to have an uninstanced world etc.
Well personally I'm not really a jealous man.. but then again after seeing that you played for 52 hrs this week, now I'm jealous of the time you have to play games.... seriously...
All I can do is laugh at people who say GW is for kiddies and that it isn't an MMO. The 3 campaigns are rated the highest on this site, so obviously the majority of people disagree with you.
The only reason Guildwars is on top is becaue of all the script kiddies spamming the ratings section giving it straight 10's and every other game straight 1's.
Guild Wars is the best text-based first-person puzzle-platform that may or may not be an MMO depending on how the Zoloft tweaked your brain chemicals this morning.
I used to get pissed at this debate. Now I laugh. Two years and two expansion packs later, bored trolls still have to split hairs in flame wars to attack this game.
But hey, who am I to judge. Keep up the hate. It's worked out well so far. Hasn't it?
guild wars is awsome and this is not a kid .why one reason the gamers the raise the bar and raise it again in pvp you dont win by luck and one dude wont win its an 8 people team effort . and beleive me its getting harder and harder to be top why cause people think that the game is done when they finish pre-ascalon. they think its finish again when they finish hells precipice and so forth and at the end when they really got the hang of it . they got to start over cause now they got to go fight live one that change everytime they meet a team.
imagine 8 guys have been playing years together . its not just the pve .pve is to learn the lay out and spend time with others .pvp you learn every time you go in a fight everytime .you press b check what the dude did on the replay then you go against him or her again but oups theres another trick you didnt know .lol it makes me laugh because its one of the simplest lay-out and one of the hardest game pvp i played with wow its not as deap as guild-wars and its ever-changing .lets say a necro found a way to beat eveybody that is not fair or a guild found a hole and are always winning guild-wars correct it very-fast so as to be fair with everybody .like i said what works this hour will not in the next in guild-wars .
aion will prob.be very good and guild wars 2 also .
i dont care what people call it , for me its the best PC game to date.
i dont think the arguement is that its a bad game. i bought it the first week it was out i personally think others are better but everyone is different.
just dont see it as a mmorpg compaired to otheres i mean when your in the middle of a quest and your group has to leave you cant pick up new people in the middle of it you have to go back to town and get a new group and start it over and the most appealing thing about it is the PvP battles which im not saying is bad but its is not much of a mmo type pvp its more of a area type pvp but im not a game expert and what i say is not law just giving my opinion in and you can take it for what its worth.

Out of all the stupid things you have spewed in this thread this statment is by far the most idiotic. Neverwinter has THE most dedicated community involvment than ANY game ever made. Look up NWN vault, you will find hundreds of thousands of hours worth of player made adventures, presistant worlds 10 times the size of guild wars, thousands of 3d player and character modles and user made scripts that do things even the best of programers have not dreamed off and it is ALL ,made by the community.
The Guild Wars community is not fit to lick the sweat from the nads of the NWN dedicated ,the only game that ever came close to the community involvement to Neverwinter Nights was the counterstike modding comunity back in the day.
GW really doesn't have a community at all, probably because they don't split the world into small servers so people don't really ever get to know each other and everyones always making new characters any ways so the only way you'll really get to know someone is if you add them to your friends list after doing a mission with them or if you are in their guild.
But this means its an easy game to get into, and you wont be put out by a close knit community like you might when trying to start in other games like DAoC and EVE.
And the gameplay itself is absolutely amazing as well as the PvP.
Theres up to 24 people per combat instance, this is 3 times as many people allowed in combat instances in Dungeons and Dragons Online. GW also has many things to make the world persistent, such as fluctuating material/dye/goods prices based on world scale supply and demand, capturable cities in Faction vs Faction PvP, continental struggle for favour of the gods, and guild rankings including trophies that are displayed in the battle islands for all to see who has won big tournaments.

Ok, somehow you saw my comment as a personal attack on NWN 2. While I'm not a huge D&D fan, everything I've heard about NWN has been good - so I'm not knocking the game or the modding community. What I'm trying to say is that GW still offers more online opportunities to group up with any other player in the world, as well as excellent PVP matching and guild support functions, which makes it eligible to be counted as an MMORPG. The Elder Scrolls community is also extremely dedicated but nobody's arguing that Oblivion is a MMOG. So please stop taking offense to a non-attack and stop throwing in red herrings.
As for your earlier comments on how Diablo 2 offers way more variety and replay value than Guild Wars, obviously you've only played in early beta or never made it past level 5. If you've beaten any of the campaigns, maybe I'll give your opinion credit and agree to disagree.

Um I never said NWN was an MMO, you stated that Guild Wars has a greater comunity involvment than NWN which was an obvious falsehood. My Diablo 2 comments still stand, you realise there are hundred of thousands of players STILL playing Diablo 2 6 years on. Diablo has randomised dungeons evertime you play, Guild Wars has the same content in exactly the same way EVERY time, Diablo 1 & 2 had WAAAAAAAYYY more replayability than Guild was will have with a hundred expansions.
Even your last assumption is WAY off base, I Had GW on preorder and got it a day early, my first character was a Elo/Monk (mainly elecric based spells for blind), called "shock the monkey" which I got to lvl 20 and did runs for my friends for those damn spirit weapons, I did this the first week of release.
The point you have missed in my posts is I actualy LIKE Guild Wars for what it is which is a CORPG, it is not, nor has it ever been an MMORPG and if it can be described as such then so can Diablo 2 (which was my original point).
its a pvp biased game lol yes you can repeat the quest.but in the end the fun is against 8 other maniac trying to kill you .like counter-strike people did ,to fight against one-another!game as been lame for a while(counter-strike)you would not believe the number of people playing this game why ? beats me only one explaination they fell in love with pvp.they love to kill the opponent or try at least.guildwars is the same but way better polished graphic and very skilled top player in pvp make this the challenge to beat .europe is in chineese and all those are in america are in .face it guild-wars is world wide in pvp .i mean you can fight a guild with people from china.russia, france, canada.isnt it telling you something?

Ok, point taken - I was hoping you had some basis for your opinion before attacking Guild Wars. A lot of people don't, and some of the things you said in earlier posts are way outdated compared to how the game is now, which got me suspicious.
Somehow you came out swinging at me when all I was doing was defending a solid game that IMHO offers a great deal of entertainment and variety, and is perfect for casual gamers who like having the social aspects of MMOs but don't have the time for the WOW or EQ ratrace. You also claimed I thought GW was the best MMORPG ever, which I never did - I was only defending a great game, not running others into the ground. Obviously there was some confusion about my NWN comment, and on hindsight I see your point and apologize for not being clearer. I was only trying to point out that GW's guild features and ability to link up with any other player in the world means the GW developers have offered more tools for social interaction than most FPSes or offline RPGs. This stance does not make me an idiot, and I don't appreciate being called one or being dismissed as a troll. I'm also going to stand up for the many mature, intelligent, and just quality GW players who remain active in the game, the same players you dismissed with the "lick the nads" comment. I recognize that there are a fair share of Battlenet kiddie smacktards in GW, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of intelligent and experienced gamers (I work in the game industry and remember the glory days of Commodore 64 and Atari) who enjoy the game immensely. I'm personally a member of The Older Gamers, an international gaming guild with members in Australia, US, and across Europe. TOG is well represented among all the major MMORPGs, but one of the most active chapers is in GW.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about Diablo 2 and GW on replayability and fun factor. I personally find the excellent expansions and many game goals - from finishing the campaigns to collecting titles to becoming a master at the fast-paced PVP - really adds to the replayability. I also enjoy thinking up new skill combos that allow me to try a completely different gamestyle with the same character. Compare this to Diablo 2, which while a good game suffers from the same infatuation with l33t loot and cookie cutter character templates as WOW does. Random maps are cool, and that would be a great idea for not only GW but a lot of MMOGs to include. But then GW players can jump into the many forms of PVP available - from 4-man arena fights to grand Guild hall battles - when they want to take a break from PVE.
As a final note, I looked up sales figures for the entire GW and Diablo series and found GW stands at over 3 million and Diablo at 4 million. Not bad for a game that is competing in a far more saturated market than Diablo had to in the 90s, or that lacks the name Blizzard on the back of the box. As far as GW 2 and Diablo 3 are concerned, GW 2 is shaping up to be a full-featured MMOG with a persistent world you can change through gameplay, non-instanced zones, complete freedom of movement (yes jumping), and large scale PVP similar to the Realm Vs Realm system in DAOC and upcoming Warhammer Online. This has all been discussed on the top gaming sites and in a front cover article in the latest PC Gamer - Arenanet is already in the design phase and expects to launch the game by 2008.
I looked up Diablo 3 and the top article on the subject was IGN's yearly "where are they now?" segment from 2007. According to that article, much of the hooplah about the next Diablo comes from a brief comment Blizzard COO Dave Sims at the German Games Convention about yes, Blizzard will one day make another Diablo game. Balancing that out is Dave's comment is this snippet from Blizzard VP Itzik Ben Bassat , who recently told the crowd at a London WOW: The Burning Crusade launch event, " We cannot wait to be here in a few years, or however long it will be" to announce Diablo 3. "It's won't be a decade," he promised.
Here's a link to the article - and btw it's never a good sign when the game you're waiting for is listed right above such vaporware classics as Duke Nuke'Em Forever or Fallout 3.
2. The sideways progression sounds good, but in reality I prefer your standard vertical character progression, like in a standard CRPG, KOTOR for example.
3. I am, however, looking forward to trying out GW2, but they've just started development, so it could be awhile.
Got back into GW recently got all the games playing it for a while and finnally a mmo captivating me for a while. Not cause it doesnt have a monthly fee but its acctually very fun. Love my assassin

its true if you are a casual player with easy objectives , try leading any of the elite missions or winning the hall of heros without a good friend list/guild/allience.
yes its possible , but u better be a lucky person.
guildwars as a lot of elitists , on PVE and PVP side .. and its not that easy to fit in.
ask the noobs without rank 3 how hall of heros is hell , i have been there. or reaching the elite town and not knowing what vent or ts is ...
guildwars requires a lot more then people can imagine , i mean , socialy.
people coming from games like UO/AO/EQ/SWG ... will grind their way to the end with the henchs and heros , when they reach elite towns ... A) they start socializing for the first time so that they can actualy complete the elite quests find a build to solo farm and become rich and lonely but happy.
also i think , guildwars is a game that can make people argue very easyly , becose of the amount of possible builds .. player needs a open mind

Just couldnt' get into it.
1. Not enough persistance for me
2. The sideways progression sounds good, but in reality I prefer your standard vertical character progression, like in a standard CRPG, KOTOR for example.
3. I am, however, looking forward to trying out GW2, but they've just started development, so it could be awhile.

the single player missions...where you can play with others like Diablo 1...are ok...the pvp suxs
so i guess its a ok game since you don´t have to pay everymonth
but not even close to the best mmo
Its one of the best because its free IMO.

But this means its an easy game to get into, and you wont be put out by a close knit community like you might when trying to start in other games like DAoC and EVE.

its true if you are a casual player with easy objectives , try leading any of the elite missions or winning the hall of heros without a good friend list/guild/allience.
yes its possible , but u better be a lucky person.
guildwars as a lot of elitists , on PVE and PVP side .. and its not that easy to fit in.
ask the noobs without rank 3 how hall of heros is hell , i have been there.
or reaching the elite town and not knowing what vent or ts is ...
guildwars requires a lot more then people can imagine , i mean , socialy.
people coming from games like UO/AO/EQ/SWG ... will grind their way to the end with the henchs and heros , when they reach elite towns ... A) they start socializing for the first time so that they can actualy complete the elite quests
find a build to solo farm and become rich and lonely but happy.
also i think , guildwars is a game that can make people argue very easyly , becose of the amount of possible builds .. player needs a open mind
