SOE hires IGE executive... Anyone think that's a good idea?

Seems like the only people they can get to run their MMO's are the ones from the disreputable side of the tracks. Hiring an IGE executive? Why not Enron?

How soon you think these games will be selling credits? Next week? Want to get a full set of Mando? Why grind when you can buy? Want to become a rehashed CH? That's 5 bucks please.

Just when I thought they couldn't be more insane... they prove me wrong.

As I said in that thread....

I swear I remember reading somewhere that Smedley wanted to develop an MMO that uses real money to buy items in game.

This new guy would be someone who has experience in that sort of thing, and that truely scares me about the future direction of MMO's.

I'm guessing they start selling items and credits tomorrow. And then, next week, one of the interns will accidentally decrease drop rates. But the dev team will be so focused on adding content to sell off to players that they just won't have time to go and correct it.

This whole thing reminds me of a Penny Arcade comic in which the CEO of some big MMO company is going on about his new "vision" in which kids swipe their parents' credit cards repeatedly in order to attack a mob. Each swipe of the credit card (and the money spent in doing so) is directly proportionate to the amount of damage dealt on the next swing of the sword. Wish I could find a link, as the comic was quite funny, but Penny Arcade is just WAY too big to search through at this point.

To be honest, though, I think that this whole nonsensical turn of events could very well be what this genre needs. Let SOE develop an MMO where people can simply BUY their way to cap level, BUY their way into mad epix, and skip all of the actual FUN. Maybe people will finally see why cheating is bad, and stop paying these chinese farmers to play the game for them.

Of course, I might just be dreaming.

I don't see the problem.  By hiring the guy, SOE has just improved the ethics of their company by at least 10%.  The guy could beat up children to steal their lollipops and would still be more ethical than anyone else in SOE management.  SOE could hire the corpse of Ken Lay and not be any worse off than they currently are.

Actually, paying for in-game items is becoming quite common in Asian games, and it doesn't surprise me that companies like SOE might explore alternate ways to increase their revenue streams.  Its quite possible that our "14.99 per month" payment model might get tossed out the window, especially since the price to make MMORPG's seems to be going up exponentially.

In game advertising, paying for in game items, monthly fees, companies may use one or more of these together to help defray development costs and reduce their risk.

Since when has integrity and honesty ever been a criterion for working for SOE?

Quite the opposite, they'd prefer sociopaths to people with consciouses.

  • ShaydeShayde Member Posts: 4,529
Maybe the "S" in $OE really means Sociopath?

The problem with using a "$" in place of an "S" in SOE is that the company isn't actually making that much money.  They have fewer total customers than they had with just EQ a couple years ago.  If anything, "SOE" should be "SOe", since very little that the company produces is actually entertaining.

Ya he did say that, and I also remember a 4th quarter 2007 launch for that game which I think he mentioned in late 2005...

I think they are looking at those games that allow shops and real money to purchase items, and see the populations thinking theres money in it.. I can't see it though.. Half those stupid games as soon as I find out they have shops I get sick to my stomach.. WTF is the point of playing a game when you can just buy your way to uberness... I will never play one..

Think he was just hired for Foreign Relations, dunno if he has anything to do with the games them selves.

It just shows that $OE is all about the Microtransactions, or microtrannies for short.

They want to base their future on microtrannies.

They want to make their games free but bury them in microtrannies.

    They want you to pay.

Which they think is an improvement over the large transexuals they have running the game now.

I dunno why people are getting annoyed at this, after all how many games have SOE developed that are huge hits. The answer is none. The fact is that if they do decide to create MMO's where you must pay to play, as in really pay to get anywhere in the game, then the chances are that it will flop even worse then any of their current games running live.

The only place this would work is the far east where they are way more in to their RPG games then in the west but has SOE developed any games that are hits down there I don't think so, even SWG bombed in Japan.  The only thing I can actually see occuring is that SOE will most likely start selling ingame credits for cash thats only real thing that makes sense at the moment and who better to create a means to do that then the guy who has been on board IGE.

There was an article with smedley and some emag around the time they announced the items for cash service in EQ2.  He went on and on about different price models from Asia like the pay per hour or the free to play but pay for items or pay for higher level access.  He put on a nice little speech about 'imagine if the mmo industry' did away with the one time billing method and adopted a slew of cash generating systems for SOE.

The trouble with this guy is he never talks about what makes games fun or the philosophy behind how to make a fun game.  With him it is always the money talk and I think that is reflected in every game they made to date.

lmao they sure cant run it on a monthly fee or it bieng a mmorpg theyve made that point.

    fixed  in patch 34356

$5 in real money gives your character more then 5 seconds of air in game now

When you make money in game your real life taxes are down to 98% interest so I.E you make 5 credits in game real life you pay 20 bucks now down to $15!!

We know gas is expensive for those speeders so weve lowered that to. You know get 10 miles for $5 bucks a gallon instead of $5 for 5 miles. Keep those naboo vacations plans youve had!!

These are some of the many changes weve made to make those obiese jabba like ceos happy and you miserable

  • Just because some of you guys don't like RMT doesn't mean that there isn't a gigantic market for it.  In fact, I'd say that you guys are without a doubt the vocal minority.  I know tons of people (adults, mind you) who have purchased or sold in-game gold, items or characters, and despite popular opinion on these boards, they are not monsters by any stretch of the imagination.

The market for this kind of stuff will continue to grow and will eventually be supported by MMO producers.  It can't be stopped.  Supply and demand is greater then any amount of anti-rmt whiners.

Sometimes I wonder what you anti-rmt people are smoking.  Unless you're a multi-millionaire, almost anyone here can benefit from RMT by selling stuff to the nubs.  When you refuse the right to earn phat cash through a video game then something in your neural pathways is seriously screwed up.

If you people hate SOE so much , how come you guys are more up to date on who comes and leaves in the SOE company. And why are you posting it every time , since you give shit about the game and SOE?I don't get it..but probably there is a verry "easy" answer to this.
