Something interesting Ive know about mmorpgs

EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

Out of every MMORPG I have ever played (which, sadly, is too many), forums (whether here or located at the official forums) always have the same type of "complaints"

One I have noticed recently from a guy claiming to hit level 40 (wont believe it until I see a screenshot) already and says how much the game sucks.  Now, I have been playing this game pretty intensly also, and I have alvl 20 blaster, lvl 10 scrapper and my wife has a lvl 9 defender and a lvl 8 Scrapper.

With this said, why does one literally spend an entire week of every minute to play a game and then bitch about how much it sucks?  You play any computer game as if you have no life whatsoever and u can beat it in a week.  I knew a kid in college who played FF8 and beat it in 6 days....he claim boasting rights but basically failed out of school the first semester...poor guy didnt even know when Finals came and went.

Any person can play and "beat" any game in a matter of days, weeks, or even months...it really depends on how much real life you want to forfeit.

The ironic thing is I have noticed people complaining that many games are a level treadmill where you grind grind grind for one level.  I just find it humourous that now we have a lvl 40 person I guess upset, that he hit lvl 40 while admitting he did nothing but played all day every day.

Bottom line is this:

A mmorpg isn't really design to play 22 hours at a time with 2 hours sleep and expect, you the consumer, to be happy with the end results.  NWN was played to beat in 22 hours.  The way this lvl 40 powergamer played we would have beaten Never Winter night plus all expansions in 3 days.

The game is meant to be enjoyed. Its not an Indianopolis 500 level race where the first person who reach lvl 40 gets to sleep with the Developer of any game of their choice. Its a game...play it that way and you may find that it could actually be fun....rather than taking a screenshot of yourself and running to the closest comicbook store to "show off"

I think the problem (in some cases) is that people don't really read the storylines' descriptions or the clues offered; I am not implying you didn't, but that some people don't, and unlike many other games where the storyline doesn't really matter that much, what you do affects you here.

For instance, you might finish a mission successfully, get out, all's well... and suddenly you start getting tracked down and attacked by a number of enemies from a specific group, seemingly out of nowhere, and they'll keep setting up ambushes like that - because you are carrying an object they want, or they want you eliminated before you bring word of some plot to a certain contact.

It's a cool feature, IMHO. :) I really like the storylines.

I'm always amused by three things when it comes to criticising in general.

    1) People who decree something is utterly crap after fifteen minutes playing it - a game's worth and content cannot be evaluated so quickly, unless something's -very- seriously wrong with it (a lot of crashes, obvious buggy behaviour, etc).

    2) People who decree something is utter crap after they've spend 400 hours playing it - if it was so bad, they wouldn't be spending all that time on it, would they?

    3) People who complain about other classes and/or try to get powers/spells nerfed in a game which (at the moment, at least) has no PvP in it at all, and when it does it will only be on an specifically voluntary basis. I don't care if blasters are overpowered at the moment, unless it somehow ruins MY experience - otherwise, power power to them.

For instance, I think most people wouldn't -want- to level to 40 (the current level maximum) in a week if they had the opportunity. That'd completely ruin the game, you'd never see most of its content, but rather go straight for the things that land exps; which is what several people have done, apparently. Again, more power to them, but it isn't my cup of tea.

Any game that captivates so much of your attention that you'll play it nonstop for an entire week doesn't "suck". Clearly, if that person is to be believed, he or she felt pretty compelled to play for SOME reason. I'd likely get bored with any game I played to death like that too.

Yeah the story line is cool. One thing I didn't know for a long time is when you seen "Clue Found" there is text in the clue box explaining what happened, my only wish to the game is all the plot was in your face.

I.E. when a Villian starts talking to you there text shows up in your chat window, and not just a bubble. (I tried to change this but don't know how).

When you get that "Clue Found" the game stops and the text is right there, I mean you could still cancel out of it if you wanted too, but I am sure many people are missing out on some of the story, I was and didn't even know it until lvl 16....

Also for those lvl grinders A good chance the lvl cap well be raised in the update after the next one so prob around auguest.... This is from E3....

    hmm

When a villain threatens me I see it in the chat bubble and in the dialogue box...it was like that when i first played the game as default

Lol, You're too dam right. The [gaming] world is going to be overrun with hipocrits and people who disregard game content and just beat into their minds that the game will suck, and then it really does suck for them. Hehe. Still don't know whether to get it or not, though. No topics answer my questions about this game, I'd appreciate if you posted in my topic on if its the right game for me.

My cousin is like the people you talk about, sadly. He got UO last year, i think, and allll he did was nerd over that game, gushing about how incredible it was. A month later "I got bored, the game sucks anyway." I should have slapped him right then and there.

This is CreativeName's fancy schmancy sig. Let the 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing commence... Now.

Been playing 3 days. No matter what, this is leaps and bounds beyond SWG at the lower levels.

But then again, we'd all be better off if Koster/Vogel tied rocks around their necks and jumped in the Colorado.

Interestingly enough, I have no interest in the venue. Yet I find myself deeply involved in the game. I even bought a Prima's guide, ironically (after years of dissing them). BTW, don't bother, they are still just as useless.

I too hate the hypocrits who power level in games and then complain at them. If these games were single player games then those people would have finished and have nothing to do at all. Think yourself lucky that there is something at all to do at lvl 40.

These games arent races to level 40, they are about the adventure and discovering the world etc. Just because hellions and skulls are noob fodder doesnt mean they dont have a plot and doesnt mean you shouldnt do the missions.

If you power level then you miss out on a whole load of game content. Play for a few hours a day, watch some TV, get some exercise, play a different MMORPG, go to bed then play again for a few hours the next day. And dont just team with high level people to get great xp. Solo a bit, find a team around your level and go do your own missions. You may find the fun last slightly longer.

In life if you were spent your whole teens trying to get a job and retire on a pension then you wouldnt enjoy life either, so why do you think a game is different?

It seems to me that every time someone says something negative against a game these two arguments are used against them. If someone says, "I didn't like this game. I played until level 10 and--" he gets cut off by a bunch of replies in the lines of "You've no idea what you're talking about, only people like me who are level 200 knows this game. Go away!"

And if someone actually tried to get a picture of what the game offered in gameplay, at high levels as well as lows, and played it enough to get it to a high level, people feel the need to explain to him that he should've stopped playing long ago. How quickly he got there does in my opinion not really matter, as long as he can describe what he didn't like about the game.

Also, hardcore players often point out that "nobody cares," while I can assure you that many care. I think forum posts can often give me more information of a game than reading reviews. Reviews always tend to tip over to the positive side -- otherwise they wouldn't write the review -- so you never really hear about the negative sides. And a particular negative side can ruin gameplay completely for someone while someone else doesn't think it mattesr. Everyone has different criteria.

This is more of a general observation, not tied to either this thread or CoH exclusively. I'm not familiar with the post discussed, so I have no opinion about the criticism in this thread. It just seemed like a good starting point for my ranting.

    Nicely put Magatsu.

Your scathing wit and daring insight into the turbulent political crags of the internet are shining beacons of truth and purity for the slight remaining masses of visionless hypocriticial sheep who bleat at the thought of your glory

I agree, there's not need to power game through MMOs.  Funny thing is someone on these forums claimed to be an MMO insider and said that a discussion was had between MMO designer big wigs and they decided that power games are good for MMOs. image

This post really spurred some great conversation. I totally agree that playing an online game should be about fun and enjoying yourself. The question is what people think IS fun? Maybe some individuals enjoy the level grind? Who knows. I don't think there's really a problem when players wanting to just lvl up. Maybe that's how they enjoy the game.

But where it all goes wrong is when they complain and bitch that the game isn't fun. I completely agree with the train of thought that if the game isn't fun, why are they spending so much time playing it? Personally I like to follow some of the principles of gaming that other respondants alluded to in this post, that gaming is played for the reasons of (1) Interaction with other gamers of similar interest (2) Story Line and (3) Fun. Trying to play all day isn't something I'd enjoy. Nothing against those level grinders and exp seekers, but in the end it IS a game, and I guess how ever you enjoy it, or whatever floats your boat is your own perogative.

If you're playing the game just play for fun, whatever that may be to you then great!  But on a socially conscious note, if you're playing a game 22 hours a day you should step back and evaluate why? I don't think computers games are meant to be played that way?

In anycase, there's my mindless verbal diarreah for the day! Great topic to discuss though.

At least in part, it's because we pay for it.  If a game is free, and I don't like it, I generally don't play it.  With a game where it costs once to buy it, but has no subscription fees, I generally force myself to try it at least a few times before I throw it down; not to do so would feel as though I'm just throwing away money.  With subscription based games, I typically find myself playing the game til the end, even if I'm long past being fed up with it, like Shadowbane or Horizons.

With CoH, I haven't gotten very far (playing 3 hero types, with the highest at L11) in the week and a half that I've been playing, because the game has a monotonous feel to it.  I've been doing almost all quests and very little pure levelling, but generally can only go an hour or two before I can't take anymore.  If I wasn't paying for the game, I probably would have quit on the 2nd or 3rd day, but as it stands, I'll probably slug it out for another week or so.
