Yes I think it will but you must remember one thing when your alot younger and you play a mmorpg it only feels like it might be filling a hole in your life but thats just because you have not discovered other things in your life, and these other things will fill that hole way more then any mmorpg. Now I do believe mmorpgs will eventually realize they have to focus on whats fun instead of trying to be greedy and that right there is when it will be better for all.
Back when I first laid eyes upon Everquest I fell in love. Back then I was a wee lad, seven years younger than I am now. I was immersed. I was blown away. I was in the world of Everquest.
Now, twenty-two years old, seven years after Everquest I have not found the same gittyness nor excitement. I may have the same hype-ish feelings, or maybe even sometimes the same rush I got when I thought about the stuff I could do.. but low and behold, I find myself getting bored with MMORPGs within the first few days or weeks of playing them these days. Nothing has come out since. I want that feeling back. I'm not in it for the cool, intimidating equipment. I'm in it to lose my senses and actually delve into a world much more mysterious than our own.
I need to either: A) start designing game worlds for a company or stop playing MMORPGs -- they are all let-downs as of lately.
EDIT ---- BTW, great poll.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
This is a pretty good poll. I always wondered this myself as well. No my first MMO wasn't my favorite. It was shadowbane, which I did have a ton of fun in, but it was short lived due to the bugs and how the server played out. SWG was my favorite MMO so far.
eq was mine as well, the world and lore pulled me in maybe to much it was a hardcore game and I out to much of myself into it. I never will again because I realized there was so much I was missing out on and so much more to life then some escape to reality all the time?
Yea its good once and a while but not that much, if your not happy with yourself or life in general it is understandable so I guees a part of me felt this way back then. But anyone can choose how to feel and view life or themselves. I do think there will be a game I will love and enjoy, but never again I could get that exact same feeling because there is so much outside of the games to enjoy.

There's some good info from a study done on this in a paper by Bartle. http://www.itu.dk/op/papers/bartle.pdf Per the study, most veteran players judge all virtual worlds as a reflection of the one they first got into. I can't help but do the same, though I don't neccesarily think my first one was the best.
I'm not one of the UO-Everquest-MUD bunch, for I was too young when they were around. But I wouldn't say my favourite MMO is my first one, because I eventually left it to see a bigger world of more choices. However, they definitely hold a very special place in my heart, and I return to see it once in a while.
Sadly no, my first MMORPG was Final Fantasy XI which, i have to admit, had tons of fun. I just think i had a better time with SWG Pre-Cu. The world was so alive and i felt like i was actually in the world of Star Wars. But i have to admit, after going back to Final Fantasy XI, i didn't have as nearly as much fun as i did when i first played. It could be that your first MMO experience is great and then it gets less as time goes by.
But my first MMO was Everquest(well... technically Castle Infinity). The first MMO I actually enjoyed fully was DAoC. And LOTRO is the only thing that has come close since.
No, my first real MMO was FF11. It was good fun but after a year and a few on-off months I quit and haven't had the urge to go back yet. I´m still waiting for that MMO that can really take its place as something I´ve played for a long time (WoW and GW didn't last too long for me), but I wouldn't say FF11 is my favorite one out of all of them - I like most MMOs I've played for different reasons.

I was in love with AC back in 2000. I guess I had a lot of fun with it, but I think I probably had more fun in WOW overall, since I met my fiance and we've had a great time playing it together off and on.
The MMO concept was all I fell in love with. Level & quest grinders just bore me really quick now.
I feel exactly the same.
I could answer EQ was my first and favorite MMO because i spent 4 years there and had tons of extremely cool and fun times. But WoW was much better in every single way regarding game mechanics and technology and i had fun playing it for 9 months on and off, but the community was too immature - i'm 25 yo now, and those little 15-20 kiddies were simply not my cup of tea.
Now, the prospect of starting at level 1, gaining exp, collecting loot and eventually raiding doesn't cut it anymore for me. I just have a "been there, done that" feeling now when it comes to MMOGs : there is no point doing that, therefore if it's not extremely fun, i'll no be part of it.
I think most developpers got it right, as most of upcoming MMOGs are massively PvP, and less about raiding/itemizing - i'd venture to say that Vanguard is an anomaly in that aspect as well, as in so many others.
My addiction History: >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

Wow, more than 50% say yes. First impressions are everything, even in the virtual realm, interestingly enough.

The newness of MMOs have worn off me. I expect stories and journeys in my RPG games. MMO are just a place for kids to hang out, nowadays.

However my current mmo is DAoC and it's tons of fun as well.

No it isn't my favorite at this time. My favorites are EVE and LOTRO.
my first mmorpg was Asherons call 2 - as i must say it was a great time and lot of fun either;
so my best experience i had so far was with World of Warcraft!!
And yes, I'm sure there will be one day some game that give me the same feeling ( for one or the other )
Trying hard to become human as it should be.
Na, my first was The Legend of Mir (beta) and The Myth of Soma, mainly because I saw them on Game Network TV.
They blew me away when I was younger, but they were 2D and kind of basic, so it was only a matter of time really.
My favourtie now is Planetside and also pre-cu SWG, they are what I measure new games by since if it isn't as fun, then what's the point.
