Really depends what you want from a game, its a bit of a open question.
Many says its like WoW which isn't a bad thing, just what I have read and seen (my mate is playing the beta).
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
I really enjoyed Closed Beta. I read the novels back in my high school years and have been a fan ever since. The flavor of the game closely follows the Tolkien world and most experience is actually earned through quests as opposed to mob grinding. I dont see any real comparison to WoW except that both have elves, humans, dwarves, etc. LOTRO has a central plot that is followed by a series of quests as you gain levels. You can follow the plot line or ignore it as you see fit. I wasnt in the beta long enough to really get into crafting so I cannot comment on that aspect. Hopefully, most of the Internet brats will stay in WoW and leave LOTRO alone for us Tolkien fans.
When people say LOTRO is a WoW clone, what they really are saying is that LOTRO has a lot of content, is stable, has a lot of polish, runs on a wide range of machines, is accessible, and is pretty fun.

I'm a very jaded MMO fan who has been very disappointed with almost every MMORPG I've beta tested or played over the last few years. I settled on WoW and played there for over two years. I liked City of Heroes alot for a couple months, then I found it repetative. The other major releases in that time I've found wanting or out right horrible.
I went into LotRO with fairly low expectations. I liked it enough after the first few hours to keep playing and now after about 40+ hours played, I really love it.
It's a game that gets better as you go and it's a world where exploration is a nice element. If you decide to try it, give it a real go. It's casual friendly, but there is definitely a lot more beneath the surface. Tons of well written quests and beatiful world with realistic geography and beautiful vistas.
No game will be for everybody, but it's a very solid title with a lot to offer. Give it a try!
I personally like it but its all up to you but my opinion is yes its a good game but find out for yourself free beta for 9 more days i believe cap is at lv 15 but alot to explore and get to know
Lord of the rings online is half of what World of Warcraft was at release, so if you can get past that and the omission of 90% of the middle earth from the game then give it a go.
It is a good game for me. It has elements in it that I catch my eye. For the most part you just got to try it yourself , there is no excuse not to when the beta is free ?
The advice to sign up for the World whatever (free open beta) is excellent. Most who try the game like it; accessible quickly, but with a lot of depth to keep learning. Not a terribly large world, but more importantly, a dense world. Lots to be seen off the road. Quests range from the very standard, to instanced epic quests which are an advancement of the MMO genre, to humorous quests; deliver a pie without being spotted by hungry hobbits.
It IS beta, and the economy is not fully balanced yet, so you may need to make allowance for that. That's the only drawback I can think of. It runs well on older machines, and is very polished, especially for beta.
