I don't really like this game...

image Before you flame me beyond recognition, please hear me out:

1) I don't really see the point.  I get a mission, beat things up, then get another mission, and then beat more things up.  Yes, it is very cool to watch--but I wish there were a little more depth.

2) There aren't many goals to strive for.  There aren't any, actually.  Again: what's the point?  There are never any rewards except maybe some enhancements, but that's just to get you out there beating more stuff up!  I really feel no reward for what I'm doing.  At least in games like Lineage II (as bad as that may be), you were able to buy new weapons, armor, and then switch classes, etc.  It felt like you were actually getting stronger.  I don't really feel that with City of Heroes.

3) The community is horrible.  If I had to pick out a community with the greatest lack of creativity, it'd been this one.  Sure, Lineage II, Star Wars Galaxies, and even Final Fantasy XI had its losers, but I am so fricking tired of seeing people who somehow think that they're The Hulk, Wolverine, Spiderman, or some variation of them.  Then there are those who think that they need to name their characters something vulgar like "Peewee Spermin", "Patty Papsmear", "Cunning Linguist", or "loveslave".  And if those names don't even make you somehow shake your head, then you've got issues.  There are also those who seem to have gotten something sticky stuck under the SHIFT or CAPS LOCK key when they named their characters--either that or they have a poor grasp of capitalization.  Whatever the case is, however, it's all very annoying and disillusioning.  Why can't people be at least halfway civil--even if it is a game?  I find myself always wanting to solo because I can't stand being around these "people".

4) There isn't much room for giving your character a decent name, though.  At least in fantasy games you can usually just pluck down some letters until you have something (or use a name generator--NCsoft games don't have this for some reason).  Here, you have to think of a really original name--or else you don't really feel good about your character.  And, most of the good ones are taken.  This is also very annoying.  I have only made one character that I haven't deleted because I somehow didn't like the name due to the fact it wasn't the one I originally chosen--and was then forced to make a variation of the name that didn't really fit.  This was also very frustrating for me.

5) The interface isn't that good.  Some claim that this is uncomparably better than L2's, but if you take a good look at it--the two are actually extremely similar.  The only difference, really, is the color palette and the position of the command buttons.  Otherwise, they're pretty much the same.  In fact, I prefer L2's interface because I am constantly making typos in CoH because of the chat lag--and I don't make typos.  I'm then forced to go back (with the arrow key--I can't click to where I want to go) and correct a typo--often when it's too late.  I also find that whenever I try to scroll up in the chat window because of something I missed, the arrow is forced back down again because someone else typed something.  It's pretty frustrating.  I don't remember missing anyone's messages (as hateful as they may have been) when I was playing Lineage II.  Buttons don't always respond the first time I hit them (often in the heat of battle), tells are a major pain the ass (it took me a while to figure them out), and whenever I complain about it, people tell me to go read the manual, as if reading the manual would change my opinion of the UI.  image

6) There are either too many enemies or not enough enemies at one time.  When my mission requires me to kill 5-10 enemies, I walk ALL OVER the fricking town looking for 5-10 enemies.  It's a ghost town.  Everyone takes all the kills before I can kill them, or takes the kills while I'm killing them.  Sure, it makes me mad, but can you blame them?  Everyone is scrounging to kill 5 enemies and it's near impossible (unless, of course, you're not looking for them--then they're all over the place).  And you never find just a couple.  It's always a group of 10 or 20, and then they decimate you.  It's pathetic.

7) More?  Probably...I'm kind of tired of thinking for the moment.  Feel free to add or detract nicely.  image

Your not going to get any flames from me.. All of you points are valid and trust me where bought up more then 15 times in beta...This game has/had so much potential but failed (imagine this) to reach it... Im sorry but im starting to miss fighting that uber spawn boss to get his drops.. It gave me something to look forward too..  Im miss my AO dungeons like the Temple of the Winds, They say there going to be adding something like this soon but I say it should have been in the launch game. And the KSing in this game is unlike anything I have ever seen.... WOW tons of rude people just running around.  Add that with the fact that there last patch has caused tons of people to have connection problems which is a pain in the arse and this game is wearing thin on me.. Nothing worse then when your about to complete a mission then get the dreaded LCTMS message... Talk about a hour in a mission just wasted, log back in and find that you have to kill ever single MOB all over agian..... *sigh* im starting to never think im gong to find a replacement for Anarchy Online.... Damn you funcom for creating that horrible Expansion and forcing me to leave.

I'll only comment on one of your points, that being your first.

Is any MMORPG really different? All I've played is EQ and CoH, but in EQ you either went out hunting or got a quest, and in either case the result was to go out and kill things, just like patrols or missions in CoH. As you leveled you became more powerful and more diverse with the addition of new abilities, just like in CoH. The only difference I can see is that CoH doesn't have loot as most gamers know it. I guess one could argue that it also lacks a crafting or social development system for those who are less into combat, but I have a hard time imaging that anyone would find those more rewarding than defeating villains, so I admit my own perspective on that topic is limited.

At any rate, if it's not for you, it's not for you. This is a great time for MMORPGs though, with a slew of next-gen games hitting the shelves recently and in the next year. There's lots of good stuff out there, and they're starting to diversify a little more in terms of theme and focus. There's bound to be one out there you really love!

I would like to thank you for the review, i was thinking about getting the game and playing it along with my friends, however, I have only heard good reviews so far, i am glad to hear some nagatives about a game before i buy it. I am extremely concerned about the lag problems and the lack of depth. I personally really enjoy PVP (which CoH has none of). In addition, a person's name many times does reflect ontheir online personality, if the names are obnoxious, chances are the player is obnoxious as well, and i dont like having to deal with them. So once again, thanks, and this gives me some more to think about.

The thing is Mikew14, most of the online gaming community forms an opinion of a game based on what they play for the first few days.  At first, they're like "OH THIS ROXXORS!!!!111!", but after a few months, when they realize there is really no point in what they're playing--they realize it really doesn't "roxxors".  A good reviewer looks into the future.

The same goes both ways, however.  Just as many found the immediate rush of beating villains up and flying exciting, there are just as many saying "THIS GAME SUXXXX!!!1111" about a game like Lineage II or basically every other game out there because it takes a while for things to get going.  I will admit, though: some games never "get going".

As for point #2 ... have you received any souviners yet? I have two so far fom completing story lines. A Skulls bandanna and a piece of metal with the words "help me" etched on it, both peices from storylines I saw through to the end.

The souviner section is in the nav section near "clues".

I think it's a great incentive as now I am focusing on getting my storylines completed and really feel like I'm accomplishing something.

Oh, whoopee.  Some text describing a virtual item.  Doesn't sound like a reward to me.

How do you even get souvenirs?  What qualifies as a "story-line"?

And what do you do with these souviners? Do they actually serve a purpose like making your char stronger, have better defense, effect the range, run faster, jump higher? Anything at all?

An even better question: Do they make me feel better about myself?  image

No?  Well, then what's the point?

    1. Explain to me the dynamics of the mission systems of other games and explain to me how they are any more immersive or has more depth than CoH. EQ, SWG, Neocron, E&B, AC, etc. all have basically the same type of mission systems. I can't see what's different or how CoH has less depth than any other MMORPG out there.
    2. The rewards in other games are some kind of magical item or weapon. In CoH, it's just experience and influence points and sometimes the occasional souvenier. I can see some people not liking this and usually those people are playing CoH for the wrong reasons. I think CoH is about the story and character development and not acquiring uber-loot. The game is for people who love super hero comics and not for people who are just looking for another MMORPG to play. You say buying new weapons makes you feel stronger but getting new abilities in CoH doesn't? Once my tanker got invincibility, I thought I was god when I was fighting the same things I was used to fighting. Then I got my butt kicked by some Tsoo and realized that I may have been a little stronger than before but I can still be stronger. You can see that as a goal. Has your character fought any Freak Shows yet? The game does change as you get higher.
3 & 4. Are you telling me that you haven't seen names in other games that just don't belong there? You complain about the names that don't belong then you say that all the good names are taken. How does that happen unless people are actually picking good names? So, why complain about all the bad names? Then you want a name generator. Are you that uncreative? I guess so if you keep trying names that have already been taken.
    5. I think the chat window needs improvement too. Other than that, i don't have a problem with the interface. I like the fact the you can actually drag the chat window or any other HUD part to whatever part of the screen you want.
    6. Since the game is relatively new, most characters are low levels and the low level areas seem to be over populated while in the high level areas you barely see anyone. There are times when there might be only 3 people in Boomtown on the Protector server. I agree that there are either very smal groups of villains or groups that seem like to much and not enough in between.
    7. There probably will be more complaints. I also believe that those who bought the game for the wrong reason will leave the game in about a month or so, which to me is a good thing because you'll see more people actually put more thought into their characters.

The souvenier is basically like a log of the events within a bunch of missions that are tied together. It would be better if they could actually find some way to make it look like a comic book story than just some text.

What qualifies as a '"story-line?" Well, on one mission I was sent to investigate some Vahzilok to see if they were carrying a disease. My contact gave me a scanner for this purpose. (Basically, I had to go kill 15 Vahz) Once that mission was over and return to the contact and gave him my results. He then sent me on another mission that was suppose to be from a tip that the Vahz my be creating something in some sewer. I went to go destroy a bunch of containers so that the Vahz won't be able to release the disease to the public. Once I was done with this mission, I found out that I contracted the disease myself and now I have to find the cure. When I went to go see the doctor, I found him held hostage by some more Vahz. This was harder to fight off because I only had about 80% of the endurance and health I once had because of the disease and I was starting to attract flies. I couldn't complete this mission by myself. I found a defender named Doc Vallain ( a real player) to keep me healed why I took on the boss that was holding the doctor with cure hostage. I rescued the doctor, saved the city from a disease, and got my cure (actually it was buggy and I had to get a GM to remove it).

That was the basic story-line for about 4 missions that were linked together.

Dude, Alient...chill out.  Let's keep the nerdiness on the down low--I'm not attacking you, so don't attack me.

    1. I don't need to address your rebuttal here because I am not talking about other games, and I'm not using other games to validify my argument.  I don't care if every game out there is like CoH, it doesn't make it right.  If every game is like CoH, then they all need to change in my opinion.  But we're talking about CoH, not other games.

    2. I just really don't feel any reward in this game--that's all.  It's really just my opinion, I suppose.

3-4. Again, no need to attack me as a person by saying I'm uncreative--I'm just stating things the way that they are.  Lighten up.

    7. I do put thought into my character.  Is it not possible for people to put thought into their characters, even if they don't enjoy the game?

I agree with most of the stuff you said.  I would not be playing that game after the free month.  The more i play that game the more i get frustrated.

This morning i tried to play again and i got dropped from the server (map disconnect) 3 times in 90 minutes while "trying" to do a timed mission.  Of course i failed the mission....   I asked my friend who was online about the disconect and of course he was getting it also, so it was not me.

Another thing that pisses me off is the debt.  It's WAY too harsh.  I die 2 time in a row the other day and it took me more then 2 hours to work it out, what a joke !  I'm wondering what the devs were smoking when they decided to make it so harsh.

That's what makes MMORPGs so tragic...if you don't like them, you're screwed.  $50...down the toilet.

Lol, I'm beginning to respect Alient. There's nothing I love more than to see someone who starts an "I don't like it" topic have valid points made against them. Wtg.

But I have to agree with zide about the 50 bucks thing...

This is CreativeName's fancy schmancy sig. Let the 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing commence... Now.

Um...what?  What is your definition of an "I don't like it" post?  This is one of the very few of them about this game on this board--and at least I provided valid arguments.  At least I didn't just say "This game sux.  Don't buy it."

Maybe next time I'll do that. image

It seems to me, though, that if you disagree with a post--you don't like it and consider it wasteful.

Creativity for someone who says they dont have the game yet, you sure as hell defend  like you have.. Why waste your time here, go play the game you can DL it off the net.... When you fall asleep from boredom, good.

Where did I attack you? I was trying to give a valid argument to why some of your points such as naming characters doesn't hold up. If you look at some of my responses, I agreed with you on some points. Don't take things personal. Take them as constructive criticism. I asked if you were uncreative. I didn't say you were uncreative. If you took that as an attack, I would wonder what would happen to your self esteem if someone called you something worse.

I have decided to go ahead and get the game. I hear from alot of people that it really isn't that bad a game, sure, not much depth, but CoV will add PVP and i might as well go lvl a character to be effective once that gets released. Most of my DAoC guild moved to CoH and they are having a blast, i'm jsut gonna join them for a bit and see how it is for myself. I alwasy enjoy some negative comments about a game because it really lets me prepare better for those "surprises" that await me.

Anyways, how does an Energy/Devices Blaster sound?
