Best crafting in a MMORPG?

AmbassadorDvinnAmbassadorDvinn Member UncommonPosts: 339
I'm in search of a MMORPG that has a amazing crafting sytem.  What do you think?  Ryzom?  WoW?  Something else?  Which is it?

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

Star Wars Galaxies even though the overall game is lame. The crafting system is still way better than anything I've seen to date.

Craft Weapons, armor, clothes, houses, vehicles, food, drinks, furnitures and anything in between.

    EQ2 is also kinda good.

My favorite: Horizons, but the game is very near death, so I don't really recommend that.

Honorable mentions: Saga of Ryzom, Everquest 2, and Vanguard.

I don't recommend playing Vanguard right now either though, heh. It's in pretty bad shape currently.

Ryzom is more open ended than Everquest 2, while Everquest 2 is much more linear. So whichever you prefer :)

EDIT: Just read the above post, and realized I forgot SWG. I did really enjoy SWG crafting.

I agree, SWG had the best crafting, but don't forget when they released NGE they removed item decay.  So that had to be a huge negative for a crafting purpose.

I unfortunetly missed out on SWG pre-NG.

I've started up Ryzom again yesterday and I miss the sandbox games.  Damn fine game, though.

Ryzom has a great crafting engine. The only problem is you can't customize it or see what it actually will look like before you craft it.

WoW has a pretty good crafting engine, lots of options.

SWG had, and I say again, HAD an awesome crafting engine. Full customization  and upgrade of items. One problem now is there is no real economy so unless you have high end stuff it won't sell, and it takes forever to master. Click your little heart out for 3 months solid or you can save a few clicks by building a macro. Either way you will do serious click grind.

All of the above have their plus' and minus'. This is my top 3 for crafting, this is only my opinion. I'm sure others will post with their favs. GL to you and your search for the right game.

(keep your eyes on PotBS, also looks like a good crafting engine, but looks can be decieveing.)

What Do you look for in a crafting system?

Because WoW is fine if you want to click a button wait a few minutes and bang you got it.

Horizon's  Lord of the Rings has more indepth crafting systems that requires a few steps and its not just a simple button press.

My personal favorites would have to be: Ryzom, SWG.

Games in which material gathering/processing takes more of a precedence over actual crafting: A Tale in the Desert, Roma Victor, Horizons.

Supossedly in depth but can't confirm to what extent: Wurm Online, Ultima Online, Eve, EQ2 and Vanguard.

WoW's crafting is ... pathetic at best compared to all others.

And ofcourse none of this actually tells you anything on the state of these games. But at least you'll have some names to do some research on.

if you want crafting that matters try a tale in the desert or wurm.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Auto Assault has a pretty damn good crafting system.  You can reverse engineer stuff, and make new blueprints.  Its pretty interesting.
  • LordSlaterLordSlater Member Posts: 2,087
EvE has a good system you can design blueprints now and use the extensive resource system to get the parts you need to build stuff.

So I just finished reading a super long, tiring webpage devoted to telling me everything about PotBS.  The crafting system seems like it might just be numbers and no actual graphics.  Do you know anything about this?

I'm really looking forward to playing PotBS, but unfortunately, I'm not happy about their crafting choices as they've opted for a production system, a la EVE Online, rather than a crafting system such as what SWG had.

What this means is that in a crafting "race" with a production system, the best manager wins. In a crafting race with a crafting system, the best crafter wins. Production is all about gathering the most resources in order to throw the most product out into the markeplace. A good crafting system is about creating individual items, each of which theoretically has a chance to be truely outstanding--a legendary sword, for instance that may never be duplicated because the unique combination of resources and components may never again be obtainable.

In a production system, all swords are the same, the only difference is what price they might be produced for because someone (or more likely some group) has better access to the materials required.

The last time I checked, a production system is what PotBS was going for, not a real "crafting" system.

Since the version of SWG everyone is referring to doesn't exsist anymore forget that one....

I would say if you are looking for a good crafting system, stay away from all the "generic fantasy" games, as they are all copies of one another anyway, and you will be in good shape.

Ryzom, EVE, and just based on what I've read Auto Assault. I'm sure there are a few more.

Also keep an eye on Fallen Earth, they sound like they have some interesting ideas for crafting in the dev interviews.

That is exactly what I was afraid of.  Damn.

Shame about SWG it was hands down the best crafting system.

Out of the ones left that are worth playing IMHO, you could look into EQ2 or Vanguard for your fantasy mmo fix.

Or try EVE for a space based mmo, EVE has a lot to offer in crafting although it's a little hands off when compared to EQ2 and VSoH.

Ryzom also has a good crafting system, I just found the game not to my liking.

Not much really. I probably read the same thing you did about PotBS. I should probably said it sounds like a good crafting engine. We will see if they have made some kind of graphics interface for crafting. Open beta next month. It kinda sucks though cuz you know what everyone is going to be and do in the game. ( pirates, building ship hulls and canons )

EVE doesnt have great crafting per se, it has a great player-driven market.  The "crafting" part is very simple (point, click and wait), but sourcing mats, transport, pricing and marketing are all very deep systems in EVE.  It's more of a mercantile simulation than a crafting experience, really.
