Hello All,
I recently had an opportunity to discuss a new MMO in the works by Doomsberg Entertainment built upon the Multiverse client. It is actually the same platform that "Force of Arms" is built upon for those following along with that title. In any event, if you want to check out my discussion with them here is the link http://mmorpginformer.blogspot.com/2007/04/forgotten-legends-q-with-andrew.html
From what I've seen and heard about this title it could definately be promising. I'll be talking again with Doomsberg as the title progresses so I'll post the updates as I get them.

MMORPG Informer : With so many MMO's out there, both "Free to Play" and subscription based, what is it that Forgotten Legends will bring to the plate to help it stand apart from the pack?
Andrew : Forgotten Legends will be taking the best elements from many of the games that already exist to create a game that is easy to play and has the freedom that many gamers are after. From the moment players log in,the game will use familiar systems so players can start enjoying the game straight away. As the game progresses they will find themselves in
will be a great PvP section of the game with huge open battlegrounds and the opportunity to attack enemy towns. Players will even be able to turn against their faction (EQII does this ) and join either the enemy or even the side of evil in the world. Basically, players will have more freedom and variety (notice they dont say HOW) along with an easy to learn core all in one game. Bla Bla Bla
So basically nothing to "help stand it apart from the pack". Just the usual "play our version of EQ because OURS is gonna rock" rhetoric
Sounds like WoW, part 2. No thanks.

It would have been so much easier to just say, "nothing."
Beat me to it :P
Nothing to see here people, just vaporware.
Move along now..
While I agree that the fantasy based MMO's are becoming a bit molded to EQ and WoW standards, From what I've seen and heard about this title, there are some changes that I myslef would appreciate. The economy/crafting system for one thing in this game seems to be one that will not allow gold-farmer and purchasers to prosper as much as they currently do in other titles. For example, while there are alot of items in WoW that are designed for "High level crafters" there are an equal amount of items for purchase in AH's that fuel these real-wolrd currency economies and the gold-farmers. This system as described would reward those who play the game versus those that shop via paypal at third-party sites.

PS: from the link I figured they are gonna use PvP points in order to craft epic items. Those PvP points are just like currency, can be farmed and then sold (through items) on ebay.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Doomsberg is a great guy, if you asked him he would probably answer your questions directly as you put them. He's on the MV threads usually and has helped tons of others get started in the platform. He started designing solo then involved his brother in the work and they've come a huge ways for a 2 man team, now after adding other members they've now got a lot more going on and displayed some really good work at the GDC back in March.
While I don't personally like fantasy games, he does has some ideas i'm sure to not only make it fun to play but challenging as well. To the pharmer question there are many ways to manipulate the economy to ruin the pharmers fun, the most deadly to them is bind on pick up. They really hate that one.

I'm the leader of Doomsberg Entertainment.
I know up front what I say will not satisfy what many people are after in a MMORPG but basically I am making the game that I believe I would have the most fun playing. What point is there making something that I will not personally enjoy, as far as I'm concerned that would be a waste of my time.
As people who take a look at my game will soon pick up, I play World of Warcraft and I feel they did very well, however there are things that could be drastically improved and my aim with this project is to try and overcome those holes in WoW while using many of the things they did right.
I have three major aims for this project which are:
1 - to have a non instanced/closed PvP system that is an integral part of the game. With the ability to level up from PvP and get everything you could need to survive in the game, people who aren't fans of PvE can just PvP all day long.
2 - to have a viable crafting system that is an integral part of the game. There will be multiple gathering professions which will each use a unique style of collection. This will allow players to try different gathering professions without thinking they are just doing the same thing over again. As for crafting, an open system will be used where the quality of the items will depend on the quality and the amount of items you use. Instead of all crafters being basically the same it will be upto each crafter to try and go the extra step to make the best gear possible (well if they want to be a recognised highly skilled crafter).
To prevent the whole gold buying/selling system the higher quality crafting items will require Bind on Pickup items which can be inserted into an item as it's being crafted (so the crafter doesn't have to go get the item themselves, but the person who is getting the item made for them can insert the BoP item(s) during the crafting). The required BoP items will be attainable through many means (PvP, instances, honour badge completion, quests etc.).
The whole process will require a trade-while being crafted system but it is easily setup and wont be hard to implement.
3 - to have a game that is less focused on time-sinks and progression and more on the fun of playing. There will be pretty much no rep grinds to partake in, and players will have access to most places without having to have completed a certain instance before hand etc (like those big chain attunement quest lines).
The majority of the best gear in the game will be easily attainable (and some-what easily lost - yes you can lose items when you die in PvP). However there will be more "cosmetic" gear which players can get to show their achievements in the game - so those who like to show off their stuff still can.
---
Now I have probably already said too much about the game and wont say much more at the current time. I hope this answers some of the questions you guys have. As for the vaporware thing, I totally understand why people take that stance with all the uncompleted projects that have started, but i guess in time we shall how things go.

Andrew Harrison
