Ever since I played EQ back in 1999, I was in the 8th grade, I've always had at least one MMORPG installed to my computer and I've been through 4 computers since.
I guess I like them because it feels like another world, more than a single player game could offer.

Having no RL friends, some died some moved away, I enjoy the interaction with "most" people. It also gives me something to do after work.
However I have noticed that some players today are real asshats, something you did not see much of in the early days of MMOs.
I've always told people I play mmo's cause I can't kill people with an axe, steal their stuff and teabag their corpse in real life without serious legal ramifications. But yeah, social interaction is definitely the main thing. I've started playing mmo's I might not normally be interested in because I knew there was a good, solid group of people who I trusted and wanted to hang out with. And I've quit mmo's that I really enjoyed because of a lack of good in-game friendships and social contact.
Another big thing is constantly updating content, revisions, new classes/races/skills, etc. Generally in an mmo, there is always something new to do or try. As much as I might love a FFVII or Zelda game, it's always gonna progress and end the same way. With mmo's, there is constantly something new to do and try (well, most mmo's anyways, usually don't hang around those that don't for very long).
Im a Social gamer (prolly why I like .hack)
I'm more into the whole..sit around town chatting with friends all day, and exploring.
then fighting mosnters over and over..
pity you cant find that in mmorpgs these days
RL is boring too many set backs, I also enjoy the new world itself, hence why I like exploring.
I dont like MMO's that lack in adventure..and have no individuality.
It's called "Real Life". Go check it out while I fight some monsters like everyone else. There were just as many people lying, stealing, cheating, and generally treating every like crap several years ago as there are today. The difference is there were FAR fewer people playing in general, so we usually knew who the asshats were and it was easy to avoid them. 200 people on an ignore list seemed like enough for a lifetime, but now I'm lucky if I don't trip over 200 people every time I go into town.
I must be the worst case here. I used to enjoy traveling around the world. And to get money, i used to work all over the world.
Then i discovered MMORPG, a friend played SWG. I got a computer and begun to play.....i did never stop playing....
Its much cheaper to travel in a MMO then real live, and you meet many weird people to, Thats why i play
P.S I dont play SWG now.
Social interaction has to be the reason, otherwise just play a solo RPG. Exploration also plays a part but is not unique to MMOs.

Anticipating- GW2, Planetside2
1- Achieving possibilities. (Not enforced mix as in many MMOs, but possible paths which are not enforced in anyway, paths that you may advances or not, with no consequences on other aspects of the game)
2- Grouping opportunities (not enforced grouping as in some backward MMOs). COOPERATION.
3- Friendly competitions, we have levels, AAs, gears, badges, accolades and many more way to compete friendly...and we can dismiss some aspects we don't really like, or do a semi-real effort. I help other players and they help me progress in each of these goals, while at the same time, we may compete to be fastest there for the fun of it...or not.
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
As above with the advancing and cooperation/coordination thing but also with the exploring aspect and the conventional rpg elements which seem to be relatively starved in mmorpgs.
I sometimes think my main reason for playing MMOs is masochism. But that aside, I play in order to explore a new world in the company of other people. I also like open-ended games, so games that let me do whatever I want whenever I want (or die trying) are fun for me, and most MMORPGs let you do that. I did a lot of stuff in EverQuest, for instance, that didn't yield experience or any worthwhile loot, but that was fun anyway (like roleplaying with other players, crafting/chatting or fishing/begging from NPCs). While some people told me I was playing wrong, I was having fun and the game let me do it.
{EDIT: I miss playing the way I used to, but I've turned into the kind of person I once despised-- I watch my experience bar and plot out what gear I need to get next, and "fooling around" is just an aggravating distraction from getting on with the grind... Sheesh... That was a bit of introspection I didn't need. }

This is where I draw the line: __________________.
Actually they could invent Chatrooms without actually playing together, that would be cool while I wouldn't pay for that ^^
arggg you made me do it again :-p
ok serious now, to all of those who speak about the social aspect of gaming i must say that i have no idea what you are talking about, maybe its just me, but i dont have any possitive social experience but one, and that was when some one screwed me up so bad i decided to quit gaming and start getting a social live, and it worked...... "silence" "thingking" "silence again".... weeell a bit at least.... :-P
well im bored wrighting at the moment, and im sorry if i bothered or disturbed anybody with this post, but dont take me or anything for that matter too serious, we will all die at some point... ahh dang i did it again, cant i just say some happy things instead of some annoying offtopic nonsence?
im really sorry if this spoiled 5 minutes of your live!

Works out well, somebody gets something uber, everyone simply has to know who what where that came from. The sons are out on their on but we still find time to get together and try out the latest game .
bottom line, it's plain old fun to game. Been at it since dice and paper counters on a map board was the only way to go.
met a lot of nice people.
These days though almost all MMORPGS are very linear and require little mental effort to "master" which is the main reason why I dont play MMORPG much. Dreamlords, I think is the only non linear an inovative MMORPG being released in years.
My gaming blog
Because the meaning of life is really just finding something to do that is the least un-pleasant for you.......until you die.
MMOs are one of the things that I don't mind wasting time on .
think about that! :-P

I had to move away and MMORPGs have proved to be a nice way to stay in contact with friends. I didn't really play MMORPGs before I moved, but unlike most other games that I've tried MMORPGs have kept my interest the most.
I really play MMOS to be part of a community of people that all have some thing in common. Some times real life doesnt offer what gamming forums, gerneral chats or just playing in game w/ other people have. I always like to join guilds/clans and talk on vent and stuff. i also play becuase i love owning thingsXDXD
