-casual friendly (meaningful and fun solo content)
SOPHISTICATED
-too many level 70 teenagers in WoW telling many of us to "GO AWAY!" when we ask a question.
-too many people in Vanguard telling us to "GO BACK TO WOW!" (many of us never came from WoW).
OPTIONS
-PvP
-solo 80%, group 15%, and raid 5% content - but all optional with NO zerging (like more than 2 or 3 groups)
VARIETY
-races, content
QUESTS AND TASKS
-task is 10 boar hides, running errands (make grinding EASIER/FUN)
-quests generally take time, more or less not for exp but for an item (think REWARD with SOME exp)
EVENTS
-more sever-wide raids (PvP and PvE or combination thereof) in which ALL receive rewards
-edit: obviously, zerging is OK even desirable for these events if ALL receive rewards.
FREEDOM
We resent forced-gaming such as grouping, questing, guilding (zerg-raiding). Forced-crafting might be one as well.
VENT/TEAMSPEAK
Many of us do not want to log in to have to listen to people chat; we want to listen to the game's great music, voices, stunning combat effects and sounds. We are also listening to TV, music, audio books, etc.
Meaningful crafting
-I hate it when every character can be a crafter and a fighter. SWG did it best, one character per server, one profession per character. The way WoW does it is useless. How can you make money crafting when every one has 2 crafting professions?
-Make it so crafted items are better than looted items. EQII does this OK, but again SWG (old school) did this the best. Looted stuff was for vendors, if you wanted something good, you had to find a good crafter. Again WoW's aproach of the best stuff comes from raids makes crafting useless.
Player Housing
-Again SWG(old school) was the best. Not only did you get a house, but you could place it where ever you wanted! EQII versions are OK, but boring and sucks that you have very little choice. WoW and lotRO type games don't offer it at all!
-I want to be able to decorate my house however I wish. (no game I know of has done this yet) give us the ability to set the color of the inside and outside of the house. (simple RGB values should suffice)
If you ever find one that fits all that, send me an email!
Oh and 33 years old, with a 14 year old son who also thinks WoW is boring, so not all teenagers play WoW.

Get rid of under 10, and over 60 because people picked those just to be idiots.
Actually i've found a 6 year old playing SWG way back when in late 2004. and on the same game around the same time i was grinding down on doctor with a 64 year old woman. She was one of the few who liked games at her age. Said her grandson had turned her onto it and since she was retired and had explored Europe as she had wanted... gaming sounded like fun.
the 6 year old? Totally obnoxious if you were wondering.
Pervert!
Oh and that 14yr old Tiwanese girl with the webcam you're either very niave or you're working for interpol.

Off-topic...you are going to need a lot more than extra RAM if you are going to play some of the newer games (like STNW)....like an actual graphics card. sorry, onboard video isnt going to do it. some games require pixel shader 2.0.
Uhm, I'll Keep That In Mind.
Currently Playing: Classic Games: Luxor, Cool Pool 2, Chicken Invaders 2, And Hang-A-Roo 2. OnLine Games: Dark Space OnLine. Looking Forward For: The Sword Of The New World: Granado Espada OnLine. Coming Soon: I'll Play Games If My RAM Is Not AnyMore 246MB.
kb4 i was just going to comment on do not throw the over 60 folks out yet. Who do folks think they play with during the school year when everyone else is at school or work? Either retired folks or housewifes..... AARP considers mmorpgs a good part of social networking for those that cannot get out and about much as well. Some retirement communites have pcs set up in recreation centers with all the mmorpgs on them and folks go there to play them as well.
well the results are a perfect curve almost, seems fitting and just to put this out there, the average WoW player is 33 last i checked (a month or so ago) and 1 out of every 30 men between the ages of 18 and 35 (cant remember the exact numbers sorry) plays WoW (i forget where i heard this so if anyone could find that to satisfy all the people who will inevitably say something like "if you cant cite it it must not be true you fanboi", that would be great)
Translation:
"I saw this guy on the internet who made up statistics about WoW players ages using random numbers and I beleive him."
thank you for giving such a perfect example of who i was refering to
Then don't make sh*t up and you won't have that problem
Not even Blizzard has that kind of detailed information about their players. They just have a name, and a credit card number. And if you're going to tell me that Blizzard is going to take the time to research 8 million peoples identities (since i'm sure there's hundreds of thousands of kids who aren't old enough to own a credit card and use their parents to pay for WoW) then you might as well stop now.
So when you tell me that you found that information from a source not only NOT from Blizzard, that it was from a source that you can't remember it's hilarious. Either that or there's some guy in his basement who hacked Vivendi's databases and is now capable of being charged with 8 million counts of identity theft.
This is one quite hard to tell. There are surveys around which points to an average age of 26/27 but these are inherently flawed in the first place because the people taking the surveys will likely be older in the first place and would not represent an accurate cross-section of players. You can compare forum threads, there was a comparison of forum threads on EQ and EQ2 and WoW asking people's ages and the results of that were majority teens in the case of WoW and a lot of older people on the EQ/EQ2 forums. However, this would only give a cross-section of forum-users. You could also point out the styles and suggest that WoW has gone for a much wider appeal and with the bright colours and some of the character models that it may have tapped more into that youth market than EQ or EQ2 may have done. (as extra evidence quoted on forums, is the alliance/horde imbalance that has existed and the reasons because of that) But still, as different as the games maybe, there are young players attracted to both types of games, so really its not much of an argument.

Not long ago, at bandcamp...er... in EQ1, I was playing with guildies who had a 9 year old playing who was extremely helpful, polite, and quite literate for her age, although sometimes she got a little confused. My older sons also played pretty young... let's see, one just turned 18 and one just turned 16 and they played EQ starting in about 2000... so from about 11 and 9, and they were pretty well behaved. Mostly they just played with us, so it wasn't a big deal anyway. Noone believed they were really that young.
Now I have younger kids from my second marriage and I have banned my 8 year old and my 10 year old from doing anything even vaguely Internet related because they are soooo obnoxious, even when told to quit. My 10 year old loots every corpse before it hits the ground and doesn't respond to anything said to him. He doesn't EVER read the chat box. He plays like a bot. My 8 year old insists on talking to EVERYONE, constantly. I know this will sound horrible (mainly to kids who don't realize how annoying they are to their parents), but I hate playing with them because they don't listen and act like complete asshats. Noone else can tell they are kids because their avatars look like everyone else's, so they don't get a pass on their annoying behavior on the grounds that they are too small and cute to be asshats.
C'mon, 31-40 year olds! We need to catch up on this poll! We're losing to twentysomethings! (LOL)
... This is where I draw the line: __________________.
so are we talking raw population, or straight up gamers? you COULD say that 1 out of 30 wow players is a male aged 18-35 and i'd probably believe that. well, if you made that age range 25-40, i'd believe it.
Ok, you were doing fine right up till you said this. What? So 29 out of 30 WoW players are either female, under 25 or beyond 40? I don't think so. Back up and punt.
Maybe you meant that 1 out of 30 male aged 25-40 gamers are playing WoW. That I might believe.
31 male here. I'm bored to tears with the current mmos.
I was looking forward to STO, but the more I read about it, the more I'm convinced that the game is going in a direction I can't really follow. I had a completely different idea about what STO would be after reading the first few interviews, than what Daron Stinnett presented in his latest interview. I will still give the game a try, but my expectations are pretty low.
Now I only have WAR that I'm REALLY looking forward to...
you can read the friggin age, sex and location in the profile guys... but nice spamthread, I wanna have my bit... 26, psychotic, Germany, (webcam [if youre interested in seeing {much} blood])
