The curse of Star Trek gaming is now rearing its ugly face towards it's MMO.

I was one of the first people to interview Perpetual Entertainment when they first dislosed the fact that they would be developing a MMO with Paramount Picture's approval.  As a fan of Star Trek I was somewhat happy about this.  Finally, I thought, a MMO that would not be the same damn High Fantasy kill 10 wolves that we are so accustomed with.

When I interviewed one of the Lead Devs I naturally got excited.  One of the things I got excited about was the fact that you could walk anywhere in the ship and access the ship's LCAR system anywhere.  Also, depending on your class, you could help out the ship during red alert distress situations.  Everything was explorable from the bridge to the conference room to the engineering room to an obscure Jeffrey tube in the wee end section of the warp nacelle.

However, compromises are now being made.  Compromises similiar to the days of SWG a year before release.  In SWG we were to have mounts, vehicles, and space combat as well a player cities.  However, Player Cities, mounts, vehicles, space, ....a lot were removed and not added for over seven to nine months later.

Now, it seems, PE is doing the same thing.  They are removing ship interiors.  What does this mean?  It means the game will be no different than EVE (except for Planet Away missions where you'll be an avatar) and it will be the same as Star Trek Legacies only online centered.  If any interior ships will be viewed it will be Instanced only.  Meaning you cant go from the bridge to engineering.  Rather, when you hit the turbolift, you'll end up in front of engineering.

Petty you may think.  But Star Trek is Star Trek because of what happened INSIDE of the ship.  Not the amount of battles is had sustained.  The relationships, the problems, the teamwork was what made Star Trek so special.  It was not a Star Wars style show where space battles were so centric.

What is everyone else's opinions on this?

That's really gay. Sounds like theyre ripping the guts out the concept and focusing instead on garnering the EVE crowd.

You know, they should really have saved this MMO for later, when technology will be capable of doing more than lip service to the license.

I completely understand the impracticality of having every ship have detailed interiors but I highly doubt they'll even try and it'll end up like a bad clone of eve.  I would have liked to see ship combat and general operation be really involving, allowing for people to work together to crew a ship.

Well, let me say I have my doubts.

This is why i dont play mmo's anymore.Broken promises from developers who talk out of theie asses about a game they are developing.I mean they KNOW what they can achieve while making the game right?

So why not just say from day 1 what they think is possible?

    What is your physical limit?

No, actually don't know sometimes what is practical to develop vs what isn't the day the project starts.  Many ideas have to be at least roughed out, and in some cases prototyped to determine what can and cannot be done.

Then factor in things like cost to develop (always a concern in todays business world) and estimates as the relative horsepower of the target market and it might not make sense to come out with ship interiors.

Truth is.. I was a Star Trek fan since I saw the first show back in the mid-60's...but I always felt they should have kicked butt more often and talked a heck of a lot less.

PE is not making a Star Trek Simulation...they are making a Star Trek game... appealing to the largest numbers of buyers. I know I certainly don't want to spend my life crewing a Starship with a bunch of other folks...the logistics of that sounds like a nightmare.....

Simple, I went through the SWG debaucle from start to the finish (NGE)....

Simple answer- I will not buy a game that says - Sure, we will have it all later, sometime, maybe, patch, expansion.. period.

Agreed, I remember reading a quote from either Patrick Stewart or Gene Roddenberry saying that the Enterprise is a just as important 'cast member' as the Captain or science officer.

    It's a Sad day when....

a fly by night company like PE comes in and buys up the IP rights to one of the most popular franchises in the world.

PE lacks the funding to do this game right.

PE lacks the experience to do this game right.

PE lacks the skill to do this game right.

PE is a bargan basement company who poped up out of no where almost overnight.

PE has never done anything...let alone an MMORPG. the success of  Gods and Heros remains elusive.

PE can't seem to even complete a successful Alpha Test and they have had the IP for years.

PE will continue to dumb this game down because of the above reasons.

THIS GAME IS GOING TO FAIL IF PE CONTINUES TO CONDUCT THEIR BUSINESS IN THIS FASHION.

This problem does not only occure with MMOs shamefully it happens all over the gaming industry. Sometimes intentioly and someone times becouse an over excited dev tell to much (Lionhead with Fable ;) ).

STO, I will give an try for sure, but my expectation where differand then they are now. We will see.

I posted sometime ago that out of a list of upcoming games, STO and Stargate Worlds looked like the most likely to fail. Mainly because of the huge amount of work that would be needed to make science fiction fans happy.

Both these games will be expected to launch with a large number of different worlds. All of these worlds have to be developed with enough detail to make them feel like a planet rather than a movie set, and everything on those worlds, all the new races and techologies etc will have to be balanced with the gameplay. Then they will also be expected to launch with spaceships, bases etc, as well as dealing with the conflicting demands of combat hungry gamers and  IPs where scientists and/or archaeologists are important characters.

That's a very tall order. Sony screwed up. It's possible even Blizzard couldn't manage it, yet alone an obscure development house with no track record.

in reference to the way swg was released..

it was my first mmo, and to be honest i liked that such major things were added as time progressed. i think if mounts, ships, space and cities were added from the start it would have eliminated a lot of the discovery factor within the game. some people may have thought that running for 45 minutes across the planet was bullshit, but for me, it added to the immersion of the game. groups and guilds had a chance to form before urban sprawl was created and territories were established.

as for sto.. i think they really need to consider providing some of the more uhh.. iconic ship interiors even if it's not the entire ship, but provide access to the main focal and social gathering points without breaking canon. in my opinion the player base for sto will be VERY community based, and to limit that function in the game would certainly be a disappointment.

I'm not really into Star Trek so I wasn't going to play in the first place. But I'm with you guys, this is really stupid. Maybe it's too difficult for them to do, but if you can't do it properly, then don't do it at all! Leave it to someone who actually has guts to try.

I've always been not only a Trekkie but a huge sci-fi fan overall. When I first saw that a STO game was in the works I was really excited. I did a little research on it, after all I've played Star Wars for 3+ years a trek game would fill a different needed niche in me. Well, low and behold my research turned up a few things that put me off right from the start.

The fact that they will not have other empire races as a "playable as" species from the start. I mean who amongst you real trekkies can't wait to sit in the gunner's seat of a Bird of Prey and light up a StarFleet vessel from out of cloak. That right there just begs for me to join that mmo. Unfortunately, it will not come to be at least not for several years possibly even after gold release. That is the ultimate pvp in a Star Trek universe, to fight in a glorious battle and if necessary die an honorable death for the Empire! But since you can only play worf in StarFleet and talk people to death....well...what's the glory in that?

Death to StarFleet! I'll pass on ST until I can fight for the honor of my house and for the Empire!

I agree dude the concept of star trek was focused mainly in the ship like when they had to repair the warp drive and the bridge action.  Most everything of star trek was focused inside the ships I just don't see how star trek gonna compete going the path of Eve.  What you explained first actually had me interested but i'm not really interested in a star trek version of eve.
