Am I doing something wrong?

I was wondering if I am doing something wrong. I'm lvl 18 (rogue of course), I'm going combat and I'm mainly soloing with a little grouping. This is my strategy: I always use whatever the best weapons I find- usually two swords-I don't use stealth that much unless I want to avoid a fight, I usually begin battles by throwing my knife. Sometimes I will just run straight up and start hacking away, but that's usually if the enemy is weaker than me. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong! It may just be because I'm I haven't fought in pvp yet. I would just like any tips on using the rogue, fighting in pvp, and any other tips on using an effective combat rogue.

Thanx!

Level 18 means you're set for the Warsong Gulch battleground.  This is where I learned the basics of PvP on my Priest.  The best way to learn is to fight there a few times, get a few wins and losses under your belt.  I still play there today after all this time :)

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Hard to tell if you are doing much wrong without watching you. Under what circumstances do you have problems? Can you beat monsters of your level? Whatabout something 2-3 levels higher than you? Or two monsters of your level at the same time?

Combat rogues should be fine using any decent weapon they happen to come accross. Especially when at a slightly higher level they get a decent opener which works with swords (cheap shot).

You should however use stealth. Starting a battle from stealth and getting in one of the stealth only attacks will kill things faster (use ambush if you have a dagger, otherwise garotte).

I would advise against any new player going to Warsong Gulch 10-19. The level 10-19 battleground is full of twinks and is a pretty harsh environment even for veterans.  Instead start PvPing at 20-29, which still has twinks but isn't quite so bad.

Instead of going to a battleground, you should practice working in groups and going to instances. You are just coming up to an appropriate level for the deadmines (if you are alliance) or the wailing caverns (for horde). A lot of the other people going to these instances will also be new players, but it's still a good place to learn. In particular, you should practice trying to sap at the start of fights, in order to remove one enemy from the battle. The instances also have better than average treasure available, so they are a good place to collect gear.

You should also do any class quests as soon as they become available, since lock-picking and especially poison are both important for rogues. The Horde lock picking quest is quite nasty, so don't be afraid to ask for help.

Yea as a rogue I would definitely use Stealth. It's what gives rogues the jump on the enemy and makes fighting a lot easier. Learn to use the moves that come with Stealth like Anti said and you should see a change in fighting. Maybe try a dagger in your main hand and sword in off-hand so you can Ambush. You can always switch your dagger, after you pull off the Ambush, with a sword.

You should always try and start a fight while stealthed.

My first character was a rogue, and I tried my best to always creep up on my targets.

    At 14 you got:
    Garrote (Rank 1)
    50 Energy 5 yd range
    Instant
    Requires Stealth
Garrote the enemy, causing 144 damage over 18 sec, increased by your attack power. Must be stealthed and behind the target. Awards 1 combo point.

That is a DoT that will aid you in killing your target more quickly.  Not only does it do DoT, but it also adds a combo point so you can reach a finisher quickly.

As for PvP, I always found that experience teaches volumes.  Although, testing out PvP with a 19 rogue with no twink gear is not easy.  I suggest waiting for the 29 bracket or even the 39 bracket.

Also, don't listen to the hype.  Switching weapons from a dagger while stealthed to a sword after is not really that helpful.  There is a reason swords have their own associated talents.

When you get cheap shot you can preform an opener which takes away from the DPS of your target.  It is a basic stun that lasts a pretty long duration and allows you to build combo points with Sinister Strikes.  I found that switching to a dagger for an ambush merely wasted my energy and slowly my grinding down.

I suggest using whatever opener you can without switching until you said cheap shot.  Cheapshotting and building up 5 points to a kidney shot and then 3 points to a Slice and Dice is really great and leaves the mob pretty useless most of the fight.

I also think switching weapons just wastes your valuable stun timer. There is a global 1 second cooldown (for rogues) when you switch weapons in combat, and that is *at least* 1 second of your stun wasted.

Secondly, there are not that many dps increasing talents you can grab at your level in combat tree. Combat is good later on when you get to spend more points there.

Always start in stealth mode if you can. I had a rogue but got bored and deleted it.

Dunno bout you guys but I never had problems switching weapons. I only did it in PvE and  like before I was lvl 30. After awhile you can get a weapon you can stick with. I know for awhile I couldn't grind without getting that jump with ambush then I'd switch to a sword because I did more dps. Until I got a good enough sword that it wouldn't matter if I started with ambush. And the global timer never affected me really. But yea I only used the strat for a lil but like I said, but whatever works for ya. Just keep pokin em.

I disagree with your second point.  Improved SS, Improved Gouge, and Precision all increase DPS.  Combat is the BEST grinding tree for consistant DPS.  Other trees only allow good DPS situationally.  Not all monsters can be tagged from behind every time.  Combat allows openers that do not require being behind the target.

A burst damage opener does not increase your DPS overall.  You just see a bigger number in the beginning.  Ambush is crappy DPS with a combat build
