Me too.  It should have been a fat bald guy sitting in his mom's basement, putting on lipstick to "roleplay" his hot elven huntress

Seriously, though, yeah, crappy ad.  I hope the marketting scheme works for them, but I don't know.  Does using real people make the game look cooler, or even more geek-ridden?  Which I'm guessing is what they're trying to get away from.  Do non-gamers percieve LARPing as less geeky than computer gaming?  Geez, I sure hope they're wrong...

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

But I can list you every scene of the "this is living" Playstation 3 commercial, without one second of ingame PS3 gfx shown. Why is this, because the spot catches your eye and burns into your mind. Whenever I watch TV spots like "BUY; GREAT PRODUCT, LOOK" are just "generic guy lies into my face and wants my money"...

Seriously, my MUM told me she had seen the TV-Spot trailer on a Lord of the Rings site in a small sandbox while browsing chatrooms. She still remembers every moment of the clip, because - It's a friggin good commercial... It's not about showing off but about making people wanna have my product....

PLUS: Who believes ingame footage anyways. Ever seen the ingame trailers of Vanguard, DnL, Horizons etc. I call LOL, I'm not getting myself blinded anymore ^^
And thats exactly what an ad for a game should be, Images about the GAME. not about something that hasn't anything to do with it.

and judging by the "success" of the Ps3, I can't really say that the Ps3 commercial is a good example.

I actually liked it.  The part with the woman getting make-up on was a little stereotypical.  But Of course my wife doesn't go anywhere without putting on make-up first, so it is kind of true.

First off most people watching that commercial would not equate it to LARPing.  For most of the casual audience they have no idea what LARPing is.  Heck I have been a gamer since I was a kid, played D&D in grade school, played MMO games since the mid 90s and I didn't know anything about LARPing until I got stationed in Iceland in 2003.  That was the first time I had actually heard much about it.  When I watched the commercial I didn't even think about LARPing.  I saw the 3 characters getting ready in RL and then showing there Ingame characters, kind of like they morphed into the game world.  I don't really see any real tie into LARPing.

All in all I think it was a well done commercial and would actually get their point across perfectly.  And yes marketing teaches you to not really focus much on the product.  The consumer doesn't care really about what the product is.  They only care about if the commercial is memorable.  Look at any of the famous commercials.  GoDaddy superbowl commercials, Taste Great, less Filling beer commercials, etc.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

I didn't mind the commercial, it actually was meant to appeal to emotions, and not be analytical.  (see how this works).  If you actually care about what the screenshots look like, and would buy a game based on this, you probably already have played the beta.  This ad was designed to be a tongue in cheek appeal to the casual gamer, and they won't be too worried about being associated with LARP'ers. (I didn't even know what that meant.

Actually, where I live we have Rennisance festivals every year..and thats the image that came to my mind.  I don't think badly of those folks who RP at them..in fact, some of their costumes are better than the ones in the ad.

One of my co-workers is a 40 year old PM that we call the "Velvet Bulldog".... for her tenacity..but every year she dons her Renisance Fair gear (this year she purchased two new long daggers)

She and her family currently play a FTP MMO and could easily be enticed by an ad like this to play LoTRO.

I think some of the folks on this site are ashamed of being associated with gaming or being accused of being nerds....

Doesn't bother me.... I gave up caring what other folks think about me a long time ago  (an advantage of age)

I agree  Kyleran, that it was supposed to be a tounge in cheek appeal. I just wished they focused more on the game basically showing " Look, heres what you can do/places you can see/ monsters you can fight in game" instead of the other approach. Like Isaid before, its a damn great looking beta and they should be proud to show that game off.

I'm not ashamed of being a gamer, I embrace it

I thought the advert was good.

You all need to drop the whole 'aimed at mocking nerds' and whatnot because I didnt see that anywhere in there, at all.

From what I gathered, it was aimed at the tag line "Pack your bags and Move to Middle-earth" - which is the tag line i see Codemasters going with throughout their advertisment campaign. The whole demonstrating elements from LOTR (and fantasy) in the real world (Gimlee's Axe, Aragorn's Sword) shows the idea of getting potential players (demonstrated through real actors) ready to move from the real world into a fantasy world - aka getting people ready for the games release. The idea could have worked with anything LOTR (or fantasy) related - movie, book or game.

Thinking a marketting team would aim at stereotyping the geek / nerd genre to promote a game is foolish, you're not all quite that special to get that much attention via a tv advert just yet ^_^

The advert is trying to draw in casual gamers, or just fans of LOTR who've currently little interest in MMORPG's - hense the live action footage (viewers can relate it to other popular fantasy medias, including the LOTR movies.) Someone already stated this earlier and they were absolutly correct.

Showing 30 seconds of in-game footage would immediatly put off non-gamers who are not aware of the game, where as 30 seconds of live action is gripping and targetted at a larger television audience than in-game footage because it is a wider known media form.

Well the target audience probably wouldnt know the opening instance from your raid type endgame, so showing what you can do and where you can go means very little. You're trying to attract people that have never touched LoTR.

Of course people who know about it will already have seen some screenshots and know details about the game. Maybe even tried the beta.

The message is that there's a Lord of the ring game, and that message was completed the moment the commerical started. The secondary goal was to say that lots of other people will be there. A lot of MMO's try this same approach, it basically lets you know that you're going to be playing with thousands of other players.

I dont believe it's making fun of nerds. If you ask me it's actually trying to say that normal people are playing it. Hence most of the actors are normal and some are attractive.
