Yo, I been playing mmorpgs for a good few years now. Thinking of playing Eve, AGAIN. This will be the third time I've attempted to get into it (will redownload the trial).
However, I got the feeling I've been down this road before and I'm only going to be dissapointed.
I like the game, I like the idea of open PvP, I like the idea of the player made economy, I like Eve. But I don't like the way that I am years behind everyone else, and to catch up with them requires the training of skills. Which im sure will take MONTHS! And by then, they got better skills.
I just want someone to hold me hand and tell me itll be alrite
Nah seriously though. Is starting to play eve so late a waste of time?
Oh also got a few side questions:
1) In WoW, you get to level 70, you raid to get gear, or PvP to get rank/gear.. I understand that, I have a goal. In Eve, what am I aiming for, whats should I stride for?
2) How is this game different from Runescape? Im sorry if this has offended some people, but from past experience it felt very similar, especially while minning. Like, you click on the ore, wait a while, take the ore back to town, buy a better Pick Axe so you can mine faster. Is it always like this?
3) When playing this game I got bored of the PvE content REALLY fast. Doing those damn missions that seemed to be the same each time but in a different order, or a slightly different location. Is PvP accessible to new players? Am I just gona end up being blown up instantly by a "higher level"? I want to be able to finaincially profit from PvP, with a risk of course, but still have at least some chance of acheiving somthing. Are there designated areas for new players to PvP?
Well I guess thats all i got to say/ask. Thanks for any feedback.

I posted on a similar thread:
I've been playing for 5 days now (ish). I come from a EQ/EQ2/WoW/VG background, and I find it refreshing. The learing curve was a friggen brick wall, the tutorial and some aspects of the UI are rough, but once you start to remember what is where, it gets much easier.
I don't imagine myself in any pvp setting for quite some time. I am having fun questing and mining and piling up money to get better ships. I still have alot to learn, and a long ways to go. But so far I am looking forward to it
I'm not worried about 'missing out' or being 'behind' others. If that was the case I would never start a game that was over 4 weeks old. I have played for a few days, have went from starter ship, to another ship (quest reward), to friggate, to my current Destroyer (my friggate sucked for fighting, but I suspect it had more to do with me not knowing what I'm doing ).
Money is easy to earn, Missions are fun and challanging.
And there are TONS of noobs like myself starting the game, so you will not be alone.
Tbh with little searching you could have found tons similar questions asked and answered...but anyway gonna answer again I guess.
First you need to understand that having 10million skills points isnt the same as being lvl 10 in some other game. Even with 1 million skillpoints you might be able to do something better than that 10 million sp guy. The main point is skillpoint progression is not linear and you can´t just keep improving your assaul ship skills for example at some point you will have learned all the relevant skills. So yes you can catch up to older players in specific area but no you can´t ever catch up to them in total skillpoints.
1. Good question and probably the main reason people don´t "get" EVE. There aren´t any set goals, you have to be able to decide what you want and set your own goals. My advice would be to try as many different things as possible to see what you interests you the most and don´t stay in npc corp.
2. No idea what Runescape is like. I think this is something you will better finding out yourself just play the game and find out mining isn´t the reason why most people play this game.
3. I find most pve missions boring also again try different stuff and see what you like.
Anyway the main impression I got from your post is that you have only scraped the surface and best way to find out whether or not you are gonna like EVE would be just playing it. This is very hard game to get into and takes time and dedication. For me personally it took months and 3 different tries.
Its not too late man and you wont be wasting your time.
Before i go on ill reiterate something i tell all the new players on EvE as well as prospective players:
Yes the vets have more skill point than you...but its not the points that make them deadly, its their knowledge of set ups and experience in pvp. All skills max out at lv 5 so theres no need to panic if you head up against a vet tbh. Some skills are relevant only to cetain ship classes while others are general. That being said you can quickly become an ace pilot if you decide to spec early on into one ships class and then venture out into other ones once you get the hang of the game. The guy whos played for 3 yrs isnt better than you just cuz hes been around for 3 yrs....ive beaten players with years above mine and fyi i havent reached a year in this game just yet.
As far as PvE ill have to say its crude at best but at least they are expanding on it and theres a lil bit of variety:
Missions
Complexes (getting good scanning skills allows you to find hidden complexes and ruins)
Mining (yes the be all end all of boredom so i suggest you do this with some people so at least you can chat or make it faster)
Ratting (head into low sec or 0.0 and fight some harder spawns and youll get some nice isk and a chance to get some nice drops as well.
My suggestion is to find a corp (of which there are many) that fits your style of play, you CAN be competetive in pvp early my friend specially with the skill boosts new players start with since revelations went live. Now adays you can start with up to 800k sp when back then the best would have been 300k if you knew your stuff. Factional warfare will be put in later this year so if you crave a mixture of pvp and pve this will make you happy. The game keeps expanding and theres something for everyone as long as you look for it.
To answer one of your other questions (purpose).....this game wont define it for you. your goal is what you make of it. The beauty of having one server means you can easily make a name for yourself etc. I set a goal to one day pilot a mothership....will i ever do it? who knows but thats what im going for...in the mean time i do a lil bit of everything. I pirate, i mine, i do missions, i do some trading and manufacturing etc etc.
The choices are out there you just need to do as you like. If you join a corp they may want to own a system of their own so theyll have to purge others from their target system, so maybe yuo will go to war for them and be part of that moment. Or perhaps your corp wants to be a provider of ships etc to other players, so youll head and do some mining buy BPOs and build ships etc. Or you can join mercenaries and change battlefield depending on the highest bidder, or you simply want to be a pirate and join some fellow pirates and pwn unsuspecting people. W/e it is you want to do.....theres a corp for it.
If you want to start eve, concentrate on an area and you will soon be competitive in that area. I recommend all starters to join a friendly corp and train for battlecruisers.
1) Your goal is up to you. The point of eve is: There is no overall goal. If you want to pvp, you can do it, if you want to be a producer, just do it. There is no "endgame". Its about living in a universe full of possibilities where you can become what you want to. I myself am a PvPer in a middle sized alliance that is currently allied with other alliances for a common goal: To defend our space and to conquer new area. We fight other alliances for the control of constellations/regions and I am having a blast in the fights (not the crappy fleet fights). I have to do some farming now and then to get the money for my ships though.
2) I have not played Runescape, but the mining in eve is quite similar. The amount you can mine is more dependend on your skills though. Better skills = better equipment = more ore. The other difference is: In unsecure space you can mine ore that is 10x more worth than in secure space. No matter your skills, mining in unsecure space will always net you more money.
3) newbie pvp areas: No not really. The best way to get to do some pvp is by joining a corp with 0.0 access. After a month or two you will be able to survive in 0.0, will get nice money and a lot of pvp. Beware one thing though: Pvp in eve is NOT fair and you are never safe. Players like to gank you. There are gatecamps, ganking squads, huge fleets using traps, baits, hit and run to kill their enemys. The outcome of fights in eve is mostly decided before the fight even starts. PvE/Mining will always net you more money than pvp except if you are a very good low sec pirat.
Btw: You will need a lot of patience for eve. Its not like wow where a 10 min quest gives you some reward. In eve you work weeks or even months until you start making profits.

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
i havnt quit twice like you have but im just wondering why you quit in the first (and second) place?
playing for the first time, which was last sunday, i got this overwhelming feeling of loneliness. with other mmo's u can identify other players by their custom made characters...it must be the human element...but with eve everyone else just looks like a speck most of the time. obviously you can do the whole "look at" thing and check out everyones sweet rigs, but everything just seems so sparce, despite the visual appeal of the game. i had an immediate mmogasm when i saw how much depth was involved in the game, but just like u mentioned, i asked myself...whats the point? unless im going to be among the greatest of the 20,000ppl playing that game, wheres the fun is workin my way to the top when it takes so dam long and when i have other important things to do.
i dont know, maybe ones age plays into it. after being addicted to mmo's for 3 1/2 years (where did my college experience go?) my ultimate advice is to not play it at all unless you dont mind the slow road to glory, which also means dont play for more than 2 hours a day imo. my guess is that youve been with mmos longer than i have, but have you recognized their affect as i have?
so why am i still on this site? because mmos are my hobby which i need to learn to control. so my recommendation is to fck EVE and play Gods & Heroes when it comes out (oh and for no longer than 2 hours a day)
good luck
yes you are months to years behind people in skill....but you can quickly become a force in fleet battles.
small fighters can be learn in a matter of a few weeks...if you do it right you can be born with only a very small amount of training to get up to full speed in fleet battles.
solo pvp you will need to mostlikely need a month or 2 to get up to being close to holding your own
large ship pvp you are atless 6 months for battleship.....and a year for any thing bigger
I agree with this, but a word of caution is in order. An alliance of PvPers called the Privateer Alliance is currently running around Empire wardeccing on corp operations in empire space -- both the empire side of alliance corps and smaller Empire-based corps. If you're not up to PvPing right now, it really is best to stay in your NPC corp for a while until you feel comfortable with being decced for no reason by the Privateers. This is a relatively new development, but it's perfectly fine with the game mechanics so I don't expect the issue to change anytime soon -- they will look for smaller, newer corps to dec on and then blow you up repeatedly if you are not up to PvPing, so if you really are not up to PvPing at this particular moment in time it's best to stay in your newbie NPC corp, which cannot get wardecced.
Wow ok. I just got back onto my PC. Thanks for the feedback peeps, was some good reading.
You all seem to agree that it shouldn't take years for me to be able to be competetive. So thats that out of the equation. Im still not convinced though. Someone asked why I quit the first two times. The first time must have been about a year ago, and the 2nd was about 3 months. I don't remember the first, but the 2nd quit was because of the feeling of emptyness. It felt really lonely, even when there were hundreds of players around me. I guess its the way that its just a name on the screen, has no real meaning, unlike fantasy mmos where you see a customized character.
I also didnt really like the combat. I remember doing missions for a while, combat was kinda dull but I was convinced it would improve at later "levels". A "friend" took me with one of his friends to do a mission, and he had a pretty big ship, massive infact, and watching him never really inspired or interested me. That made me feel as if I had nothing to look forward to. Really bad feeling to have in an mmo!
Oh i duno, I'm really finding it hard to decide. The fact that this game is supposidly going to fill the whole left by WoW and Co. untill the release of WAR/AOC is probably a good enough reason not to play, just because this is more of a long term game, rather than a short burst of mmoness. If you get me.
Well ok then. I think I decided to not give it a blast. Thanks for your help in deciding though. Are there any short-term fun mmos out there? =/ Well actually dont answer that unless you really want to, this question would require a different topic, a different board. Infact im pretty sure its been asked before a load of times.
Cheers!
Anarchy Online is said to be free now and you can have some fun there I guess. Like most games tho, its best when you get a bit higher.
My favourite "oh-my-god-I`m-so-tired-of-other-games"MMORPG is actually COH. Its easy to get into, you get to kick villain-ass, you can look pretty much like you want to and looks has nothing to say when it comes to gameplay. I love my Rad/rad defender to bits- It gets old kinda quick as well (at least for me) so maybe that could give you your needed fix before AoC (notice that I didn`t mention WAR :P)
OR, now that summer is coming, you could just ditch MMORPGs through the summer and come back, fresh and tanned in the fall.
Veni, Vidi, Vomite
I, too, have played EVE before and quit -- only once, though, and the first time I quit was because I was too impatient - impatient with the jump times; impatient with how slowly I was assimilating skills -- both in-game and real-life, learning to play the game skills. So I quit and went back to traditional MMO's like World of Warcraft and City of Heroes.
I came back a week ago, and I think this time it' s going to stick. I finally learned to appreciate what EVE is -- the anti-MMORPG MMORPG. You can do something in EVE that isn't very easy to do in other games... completely immerse yourself in another reality. It isn't quick, and it isn't easy... but like real life, learning how to do it takes time. Logging into WoW or any of the other games on the market gives you instant gratification -- within 10 minutes of WoW, you've learned at least 50% of what you'd need to know to get along for the rest of your WoW career. EVE just takes a little longer -- but the satisfaction of learning it is exponential compared to a game like WoW.
My first few days back in EVE were spent getting the shiznit knocked out of my by quest mobs. I was beside myself with frustration, until I learned to look at what I was doing objectively... and realized I was just charging in like I would in WoW or DAoC or CoH. I learned my ships capabilities, used tactics, and BAM! I was unstoppable. Well, not easily stopped anyway. It took a day or so, but when it came... I was pretty darned proud.
see my reply in this other thread: http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/125942/page/4
there's things you can do to get into useful pvp pretty quickly. and if you're a personable person, there's always a place for you in a large corp/alliance.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
i myself came back about 2 days ago. and i finally got my first BS (dominix) only thing is i gotta catch up on my armor hardeners, and my large turrets system (both not far off maybe a day or 2 worth of skill) and then upgrade my drones. so far im having a good time, i even made enough to buy a second domi in less than a night ratting, and came across a hauler spawn! lol made around 40 mill+ in that one night. needless to say i am having fun and will soon be able to armor tank my domi :P i boosted my elect/engineering skills alot which helps on shields, cpu/cap managment as well.
like u i think its going to stick. my corp and the alliance i am with helped me loads in the past day or 2 getting me reaquinted on what skills i need to learn and apply to my domi to effectively pvp in 0.0 space. should be loads of fun. you have to be patient with this game, if you want instant gratification this game isnt for you. but the commiunity is greaet, and there is almost unlimited amount of things that can effect you, players ganking you, pirates, other corps at war for territory, resources, this game is a very political, economically player driven game, i never seen a game so player driven. its very realistic in that aspect, and the pvp battles can be awesome to say the least once u can participate. the universe is basically your oyster. do what you will in it, but realize there are consequences for your actions, i can go on, but needless to say this game has awesome depth. and merely takes patience and a bit of planning.
