I wouldn't even worry about it. A problem with most threads when they are short is that people read the first three or four posts and post their opinion on something. The problem as the thread gets longer is that people read the first or second post to the thread, or ignore it all completely to post their opinion without reading any of it. Had he read more than a handful of posts he would have seen we already moved on.

Based on what's out there so far, there has just been the call to sign up for Technical Beta, and for General Beta.

According to what the dev's have said, techinical beta begins first. Server might be up for only a few hours a few times a week, and they will funnel people to do, and test certain things that they need to find out now. Odds are this will take awhile, and those will be the beta invites that go out first. I could easily see that taking 1-2 months right now.

Next up is the General Beta, that's where you'll pop in, server will probably be up more, and you'll test quests, feats, and pretty much the entire game, looking for bugs, flaws, exploits, and fun factor. I'd also wager that those invites will go out slowly, over the next 6 months, they'll keep inviting, as they have the need to test with more people, and have more rough edges out, and be worried about detail.

There hasnt been any info about the traditional "Open Beta", that many MMO's use, where the NDA comes down, and either folks who pre-order can jump in be involved in the last few weeks, or where it'll be available to a free download to anyone for the same purpose. I'd also suspect that the open beta, if there even IS one, would not start until October at the soonest. No reason to breach the NDA, or make it open to the public until near release date, and most MMO's dont usually run a 2-3 month open beta, it's closer to 2-3 weeks for the bigger budget titles. After all, the first week alone netted Funcom over 100,000 beta applications, so I'm sure that they can do the majority of their serious testing, without going to a traditional open phase.

I know...I was putting it out there because there were still a ton of questions it seemed about what the beta process has, so I simply took what info was available, and tried to put it out there in one spot!

"Beta part deux (for lack of a better title wink.gif )

posted at 04/17/2007 02:11 AM PDT

    Hi

I'm back from the Easter vacation and hope those of you who had time off got a chance to relax. Personally I spent the time recharging my batteries, visiting family, hanging out with friends and eating some good food. I also got a chance to do some reading and played a couple of games as well wink.gif

Last time I talked a bit about the importance of beta reporting tools, the logistics of scheduling and running a beta and important skills for a beta tester. Since my last update, over 100k have signed up for the beta, which is great news and very encouraging for us. Especially when you think about the detailed sign-up process they had to go through first (No pain, no gain!)

Today I'll go a bit more into the specifics about the beta and how it impacts us as developers and designers:

First of we will start with a technical test and then later on we will introduce more traditional content testing. Both are very important but have very different goals. The technical beta test aims at testing stability, identify potential bottlenecks and see how well our software and hardware scales with the number of players online at the same time. From a developer point of view, this type of testing is vital since you need to have a solid and stable basis on which to do more complicated testing later. The technical tests are naturally more important for coders and technical support since the data they get during these tests are paramount to fine-tuning and tweaking our setup, thus providing a solid basis for content testing. For example it would be difficult to focus on testing out how the leveling from 1 to 80 worked and give feedback on the xp-curve if you had stability issues.

Once we feel that this solid basis is in place, we plan on starting more traditional content beta testing where we gradually open up larger parts of the world and expose the beta testers to more content. In this stage the focus shifts from stability, scalability and other "tech concerns" over to testing out quests, getting feedback on animations, how combat is working out, the xp curve, class imbalances etc. Not to say that we haven't gotten lots of good feedback already, especially through the official forums, but there is a limit to how much feedback you can get based on screenshots, videos or weekly class description updates wink.gif As part of moving into content beta testing, we are also opening up a separate beta forum to further strengthen the communication between the beta testers and the dev-team. If you get into the beta, you will also be invited to participate and share your feedback with us there.

Beta is right around the corner now, and I am looking forward to crushing and splitting skulls together with you in the very near future and then sharing tales of grand adventures, evil sorcerers and ancient treasures on the beta forums. "
