I'm interested in buying and trying out Vanguard. My comp specs aren't top notch, but they aren't bottom of the barrel either. If I run at low specs, is this game still worth getting for the gameplay, I heard it had many bugs, is this improving. I recently quit WoW, and played EQ, FFXI, and Guild Wars before it.
In all honesty does anyone think I would enjoy this game if I'm looking for a fantasy sword/shield/magic type game. (I say sword/shield/magic becuase I'm not into space like machine games).
Please help.
Edit: One reason for my consideration of this game is the proclaimed importance of diplomacy and crafting. Is this overhyped?

You'll need to make your own decision on what sort of performance you find acceptable, its different for everyone.

I guess I can pick up LOTR and give it a try. I played Open Beta, wasn't too impressed but I was only in early gameplay, so perhaps thing will shape up as I level up more?
I'm just scared they are going to lack raid content, and that's what I play MMO for, the working together of many people for one goal. Not for everyone, but it's what makes it fun for me.

i highly recommend trying LOTRO. Vanguard is a bit of a disaster from start to finish. LOTRO is good fun and works

My advice, if you've got some extra money and you don't mind investing some time in this game, go ahead give it a go, see what you think....
But, you should give it at least 5 days a week minimum 2 hours per night for about 2/3 months. By this time you should know whether you invested your money wisely...

I ended up hating the game. However, I had a friend that really liked it.
I would suggest to you the low graphics settings on Van were really bad. If you can run at least medium you may have good opportunity to get a feel for it. Also, if you enjoy the gameplay and lore (? if there is any, I truly didn't get a taste of any) then you may enjoy it enough to keep going.
I am playing LotRo now and think it outshines vanguard in every aspect. To each their own.
if you even remotely think your computer won't live up to the top of the line specs, it'll be worse than you can imagine. i basically built a new rig to play this game, now it was time for a rebuild anyway, so i just ramped it up a month or two, but let's call it, for this game.
basically..
x6800
680i chipset
2gig corsair dominator ram
sata 3gps raid drives
sata 1.5gps slaves
8800 gtx
with that rig the performance was sub par.
.. so that's the performance end of it.
.. the game play end..
diplomacy was interesting
crafting was complete tedium
combat was good
i'm not a hater, i really wanted to like it, but just found either the performance issues or gameplay issues enough to wear me down.
but to sum it up. try it. (i actually might have a buddy key that never got used, i'll check tonight,) see for yourself if it's your style of play, but for me, i dumped my soe access pass, not worth the extra cost they added on to it, and not worth it to play this game in it's current state.
again.. this is my opinion on how i as a former player felt about it.

I also don't think that LOTRO has raiding so you may not like that. Try EQ2, it's a fun polished game with raiding. You can buy the Box version of Echoes of Faydwer and get all the expansions and the original game for $40. (don't buy the digital version because that is only Echoes of Faydwer expansion and nothing else)
IMO VG is much better then LOTR and yes I've played both. If you want a very complex/important/grinding crafting system it is the best I've ever experienced. Dip is fun too but i have yet to see any real value for it.

Grinding levels isnt bad enough at times i have to put in as much time crafting too?
Frist how i play the game with some settings tweaked ingame. Render quality Balanced + Texture Quality medium high (30+fps)
Second ss = Render quality Highest Performance + Texture Quality Very low (sorry i wouldn't play it that way) (70+fps .lol.)
Third ss = Render quality high performance + Texture Quality low (50+fps)
But he best way is to find out yourself
I will say Lotro will mostlikely run much better if you have a somewhat "older" system with higher details then you might get in Vanguard. But the screenshots might give you a idea if you want to go low spec on Vanguard, for me the two need to be in sink sort of speak as in graphics need to look good together with the gameplay. With my settings as seen in ss 1 i enjoy the look of Vanguard the game play is personal as i really enjoy crafting, exploring, grouping, solo'ing and what more and for me its all in Vanguard. Knowing i'm just like all the other mmorpg junky's if Vanguard wouldn't run i mostlikely would be playing LotrO until something that appealed me more, don't get me wrong LotrO is a great game but after the time in beta i had my fun with lotrO and Vanguard even when i sort of started both LotrO and Vanguard at the same time in Beta i'm still not bored with it and stopped with LotrO beta long before end of beta. Think it was somewhere like one or 2 weeks after the second stress test i stopped with it. Felt it was ready for release and pre-ordered it, but as time went by i got more into Vanguard and really enjoying it (nope not a masochist, nor do i like bugs) i just enjoy the freedom the game gives. Also i'm not pvp minded so might have less of a encounter with problem then some might have. Good luck whatever choice you make , make one you know you gonna have fun with.
But back to your original question, hey, its only 39.99 to buy it...give it a try and if you don't care for it... not that much money to lose....

Even if you find a large guild (which I did) the game is so massive that finding people to group with can be extremely challenging.
When grouped... it was fun.. in 20 levels I found groups 4 times as a tank class.
I could give you an honest opinion because i'm alot older and been around an aweful lot of games as compared to most one time WOW gamers.
Alot of people join games on sheer numbers,they like to feel there is a big world with alot of players to interact with.This game is bigger than most however there is not alot of players to interact with.This is made even worse because of the sheer size of the world.
When i started the game,prices were made by player's intelectual decisions,but after a very short time the economy was driven quite high because too many players are buying gold outside of the game.This forces prices on top notch items way above what they should be.If it doesnt bother you to be middle of the road for gear then this won't be a bother to you.
Crafting is good but you need to spend about 5-1 in ratio crafting/adventuring,to keep your player equipped with same level gear.Instead of allowing players to craft everything they need,sorta become self efficient,they force you to rely on other players. Far i'm concerned i don't like that,but again if it doesnt bother you ,then your set.
There is a ton to explore in this game,but the graphics will be extremely bland if you cannot play on very high settings.You will often see people argue over the graphics on a basis that has nothing to do with graphics but more so the layout design of the world.What i am saying some people think bright purple/orange/pink/green colours make a world look nicer but that really has nothing to do with graphics.That is palette choosing.The actual graphics/textures are at the top of the heap,there is not a game i can think of that can surpass vanguard.Until a game comes out using directx 10 and there is drivers that properly support the top video cards ,then there is not likely to be a better game graphics wise.
Although the game is very wide open,non/linear,it is restricted in that you need to gain faction standing in outside areas.Without faction standing[friendly/foe]the guards and NPC will attack you and kill you.
As far as bugs go,yes there is the odd thing that crops up once in awhile,but nothing that is continuously overriding the game.
There is a ton of quests to do,but all the good ones really rely on group play.The spells and abilities are right on par with most games,but i guess i am biased towards the over all balance and selection of FFXI's setup.I threw in FFXI because you played it ,so i figured it would give you a comparison.
Over all i would say that this game offers everything a serious gamer would want.If your like a lot of young players who just think games are to level as fast as you can then ,i can't help you.The problem of a low player base will make it hard for you to find fellow gamers to hang with,that also have the same interests as your self.This game garnered alot of hate because ,they made the mistake of telling people the game was incomplete.They coulda just sat back and said nothing to the players and no one would have thought different of it.The other big hate problem was that players wanted a high poly/hi res game that played smoothly on an average system.To this day there is NOT one properly working driver for any of the top notch SLI video cards,so nobody will have a smooth running experience in this game.Nvidia and ATI keep popping out drivers to keep the people from causing an uproar,but in reality they are crap drivers that have done nothing to help top notch hardware.So expect this game to not run like a low poly WOW game.
So you know i do not play this game anymore,as IMO FFXI is a better over all game and i don't have time to play both.If this helps you anymore,i would say that if i wasnt playing FFXI i would most likely be playing VANGUARD but only as a sideshow until something unique or better comes along.There is alot to this game and ALOT of effort was done,this i can see and i consider myself qualified to judge it.As a totally non biased reviewer of any game,i would say it is not quite EQ2 or FFXI but better than most games out there including WOW.I have not played guild wars[highly rated by many] so i can not comment on that game.It all comes down to what you expect from a game?fast levelling/challenging?community?graphics?exploring?battle system?crafting?ingenuity?this is the criteria i base every game on that i have played.

Thought serious game mean't someone who played everything from pong to now.
I'm baffled at how people are able to twist a pile of shit to make it smell good, must be something they teach in marketing .
