Is this better than WOW??

I guess what Im asking here is that I loved my warlock with its dark magic...  Does this game have any magical beings or is it just a fighter type game hunters.... warriors... so...... on  ???

Question 2:  I loved the pvp in WOW so you were always on your toes... will this be just a game where everyone helps out?? or will there be fighting amongst other players.. without accepting duels/

No, the game doesn't have any real magic classes.

The PVP is a bit diffrent, I believe the only pvp is monsterplay, which is mostly endgame content and is, imo, not half as good as WoW's PVP content.

Is lotro better then WoW? Imo, No. Its a good and very solid game. but its not better then WoW.

The game improves/refines on the design of WoW/EQ type games.

It has alot of potential and is very polished plus the devs have shown they can listen to the players ideas.

If you like WoW but you are looking for something less time demanding at endgame and PvP that is alot more engaging. Then LotRO will apeal to you.

If your looking for innovation you won't find much, but you will find some in the near future no doubt.

The PvP is very fun you have to try it out for yourself to know how fun it is.

You can't play a magical being but you can play classes that are like magical beings. They have the same kind of spells, they do damage, they just arn't magic based. They still have good animations and effects that seem magical ie loremaster. It's just the spell descriptions are non magic based.

Try the game out, you just might love it.

    Currently Playing: Everything but MMORPGs
Cancelled: L2, FFXI, VSoH, LotRO, WAR, WoW
    Looking Forward To: SW:TOR

I just posted the following under another thread but feel compelled to reprint it here. Unfortunately the post doesn't come with a variant cover.

And that is of great of importance to me.  I stayed in SWG for to long because of the "potentials" and "possibilities."  For LoTRO, the "potentials" and "possibilities" have substance, at least from my perspective, as the game does not need another year to clean the code up and I  witnessed possibilites become reality in closed beta ( crafting and mounts to start with).

  • it is completely preference. I found WoW dull boring and incredibly repetative with absolutely no change in anything since release. They did not update anything to help playstyle or do anything to increase the enjoyability of raiding. Grinding 50 hours a week in naxx just to have em come out with an expansion that demolished that gear was pretty stupid. Now everyone has accomplished everything so quickly in the expansion that they haven't added new dungeons in to compensate. It truly is a dying game.

Lotr:O is a new  game with new ideas. Hopefully they are able to continue putting in content patches worth while and keep up with what the community is looking for. I have leveled multiple characters up to 15 and gotten several gathering and crafting skills up higher than any lvl 15 should due to the level cap in open beta. Though everyone is starting to get restless due to the open beta and are looking for new stuff to do which is completely understandable. I was walking around the misty mountains earlier today with 45+ monsters at lvl 15 cuz I got bored.

I think the thing that is turning people off of lotro currently is the fact that the open beta is capped at 15 and they are thinking this should be release when it really isn't. It is still beta which people forget. All in all I say WoW has its own set of uniqueness that I know a lot of people enjoy and find comfortable due to its kindergarten like play style that even I enjoyed for 2 and a half years. Can't argue with simplistic and easy. I must say I enjoy figuring strategies on how to kill shit while in the middle of battle.

The lack of a straight up mage class is obvious as it was only the demi-gods like Gandalf who had the ability to truly cast spells. There is a class called lore-master that can bend elements though which is absolutely fascinating, although rather difficult to play untill you unlock the secret.

In the end it is truly preference as in all games, not one being better than the others as I still have friends who think MuDs rule any graphical game.

Is it better then WoW - too soon to tell - since its based on the best known Fantasy franchise to date it will be judged on that merit.

But we must remember too that a well know franchise is not the key to success .  /cough SWG /puke SOE

As a LOtR fan and a MMO fan I advise to stay clear of this title unless it is your first mmo you have ever played. I played beta and was in shock and just how boring this game was.

Boring because its a been there done that game ...but worse its a been there done that a dozen times (literally) and done it better game.

I had given an in depth review that had every detail I liked and disliked about it and cannot remember all those now. However after playing it I remembered saying what everyone said a long time ago, why make this game without being able to play the orcs etc? truly shows the lack of direction from the top.

it is "supposed" to be sacrificing PvP for depth but EQ2 kicks this games butt PvE wise. But if you have been playing MMO's for even a few years you very well should be sick of PvE in this style. its just a grind.

The battles in PvE were among the worst ive done recently actually and have no realism what so ever. You spend all your time fighting waiting for the powers you have to recharge and I spent 90% of that time just staring at those powers and clicking.

Even WoW is a huge step up here. I am no WoW fan but its battles were at least at first very interesting in comparison. In WoW you had a since of what your powers were and the effect they had where as this game is just pushing buttons. I was very anxious to give this game a thumbs up but I came away pissed at thinking it will likely be 20 years before I have a chance at a company doing this correctly.

There was more bad things to say but 1 review of my biggest gaming letdown in recent years is enough. hope this was helpful!!!

My opinion, it's too much like WoW.  If you like WoW, but are getting tired of it, all you will find here is the same game, different landscape (my dilema).  There are nuances of course, but coming from a guy who had high expectations for this game, huge LotR fan and WoW player, move on to the next game.

Though why not try it for yourself with the beta and you will know what I'm talking about?  Then if you like it, you can come back here and express why you like it so much.  I haven't found the lore I was looking for from the story personally.  Combat is no fun, no open world PVP other than monster play, but those monsters you play with start at level 50...  not sure why, but it's like that.  Takes longer to level if you like that.  There are normal mobs and elite mobs, sound familiar?  Lack of magic is dissapointing but die hards here will tell you it goes with the story.  Whack a mole and rest.  Collected things off mobs, hand em in, kill X mobs.... etc etc.

As I said in a different post, if I had played this game before WoW, this would most likely be my MMO, but since this came out 2.5 years after WoW and doesn't have much more to offer, less in some respects, I will stick with WoW until Conan or Pirates of the Burning Sea.

    Naltoks - WoW - 70 Druid
    Zanzooky - WoW - 60 Warrior
    Greybyne - WoW - 60 Paladin
    Braxbell - WoW - 60 Mage
    Puah - WoW - 60 Shaman

    Dracfranic - EQ1 - 65 Shaman
    Myxfranic - EQ1 - 53 Necro

i don't think it's as good as wow. you sound like me with your preference of "dark" magic or evil type chartacters well you won't find that here. if you are looking for a 2nd mmo to play i would say try it out but if you're looking for an mmo to replace wow this ain't it.

No not better just different. I enjoy that it is not totaly gear related, I enjoy the fact that finding fellowships on certain servers even at low end of the game is not pulling hair out . I enjoy the spawning rate of esepcaily quest mobs. I like the fact i can play an insturment with my own music. So no not better just different. Not everyone likes pvp or needs pvp to enjoy a causual game. Or not everyone rushes to end game expecting things there to do. To me it is the journey along the way..... For a causal player this is a great option.

There is magic, but (never had gotten above lvl 25 in LOTR in any class so I can't speak for the game at higher levels) not to the extent of the magic in WoW.

This game is mainly based around fellowships and solo'ing.  So you won't be seeing any PvP unless you go into Monster Play.

As far as your "Is this better than WOW?" question, this game is different than WoW.  There are things done better but also there are things done not as well.  The graphics in LOTR are very good, but even though WoW is sort of "cartoonish", the graphics in WoW seem more "alive".  The character graphics in LOTR are very nicely done, but until higher levels the characters pretty much look alike.

As has been suggested...try the game out for yourself and see...only a few more days left for the open Beta!!!

Ive played the beta and I must agree on this point, LOTRO is very good graphically and WoW is cartoonish looking.  But it is like comparing apples to oranges.  LOTRO is supposed to look realistic and WoW is supposed to look cartoonish.  It is the sytle that preceeded it in Warcraft 3 and suits WoW very well.  The graphics is pure prefference.

Other than graphics i would say that LOTRO is closely modelled to WoW in some aspects, better in some aspects and worse in others.  WoW is the industry standard and I would expect many other future MMOGs to be modelled similarly.

no Maddiee, but we all hold our first MMO in unreasonably high reguard. Ask an old timer about UO, and watch em get all misty eyed, ask me about EQ, and I will go on wistfuly about camping the Frenzied in LGuk...even tho both those games suck in comparsion to todays games.

I have many friends in several guilds who ask me this question all the time. I give them this answer.

"If you enjoyed WOW but are a bit tired of the faction grinding and end game instances, and have completed most of the objectives you've set out to accomplish, then LotRO might be a good game for you."

If you are still having fun in WOW and have goals you wish to complete, stay with WOW for now until something a bit more evolutionary comes out.

I'm in the first group, my time in WOW is over... and I'll play LotRO until WAR comes out. (I'll give AOC a look as well)
