WoW is the industry standard and I would expect many other future MMOGs to be modelled similarly. May god have mercy on our souls. lol if all mmo's start o become like WOW well id rather play on runescpae
Is it better than WoW? I think many people will find it so, many others will find it a viable alternative, if not better. Of course, no game is for everyone and some people will give what to them is an easy answer of "No".
Does this game have potential to be a viable competitor to WoW? Absolutely. WoW grew steadily over time, it didn't start with 8 million players. I think the same will happen with LotRO, healthy starting population that will grow over time.
These two games don't exist in a vacuum, there are some other promising titles that may demand a notable slice of the pie. The one thing that seems clear to me is that WoW has peaked and the two year head start they had with no real competition has come to an end.
Personally, I think LotRO is at least as good, but different, not a direct apples to oranges comparison. The future will help me decide if I will ever be able to definitively declare "Yes, it is definitely better". How long will the shipping content hold up? How good will the free content updates keep pace with the advancing player base? How well will they succeed at introducing Expansions?
To me, Blizzard has dropped the ball completely on product expansion. The free content additions have catered to a narrow portion of the player base and it took them two years to produce what should have been the first of a series of "once every six months" offerings with TBC.
If Turbine can pull off regular, quality expansions in a timely manner and also expand the world with free updates, they could have a huge success on their hands and WoW could be in for some real trouble.
no Maddiee, but we all hold our first MMO in unreasonably high reguard. Ask an old timer about UO, and watch em get all misty eyed, ask me about EQ, and I will go on wistfuly about camping the Frenzied in LGuk...even tho both those games suck in comparsion to todays games.
I don't really played 10six and uo ... think daoc has been the best mmo yet...

WowWdid, it basicly had no competition after its release...
