How does Dark and Light compare in size to other worlds? Comparison table inside.

blacksacblacksac Member Posts: 1,045

Dark and Light is one of the largest MMORPG's to be coming out. It's huge world is known to be one of Dark and Light's major features. I have done a comparison list of some worlds to get a sense of the scale.

Total area (square kilometers):

WWII Online (MMOFPS) - 920,000 (23 times the size of DnL)

Dark and Light - 40,000

SWG (all worlds) - 2025

Horizons -1024

AC1 - 576

EQ1 - 144

UO - 49

How many times each world fits into Dark and Light:

Dark and Light - 1

SWG (all worlds) - 20

Horizons - 39

AC1 - 69

EQ1 - 278

UO - 816

What % of Dark and Light does each world make up:

Dark and Light - 100 %

SWG (all worlds) - 5 %

Horizons - 2.6 %

AC1 - 1.4 %

EQ1 - 0.4 %

UO - 0.1 %

A movie that gives you a sense of the atmosphere/scale, of such a large world:

Ultimately, how will such a huge world effect gameplay?

I don't know much about Dark and Light but I would think a world of that size would not make much of a difference. 80% of the world would either be empty or just uninteresting. Travelling from one town to another would be as interesting as a car ride across the wheat fields of Nebraska.

This would only have the effect of making travel times more realistic.  You realize in a mideval setting, it would be realistic to have people in villages 20 miles apart never run into each other in a lifetime?  That even with dragons flying you around like airplanes, the world will seem vacant?  Also... area is probably not the best measure to compare worlds anyway.  What good is area if you can only access small pockets of it?  It looks like much of the DnL area is inaccessable mountain wilderness.

Large area will only be benificial if they dump the current model of static camps of infinitly plentiful, instantly regenerating mobs.  If they made hunting mobs worthwhile rather than making camping mobs the norm, then that area might be useful.  No matter what effects a new game adds, if it's not a fun game, people wont play it.  Pre-game hype like this is more and more falling on deaf ears.  We've heard it all before, and been disappointed more times than thrilled.

By all means continue with your enthusiasm.  It's good to see that there are still people foolish enough to fall for press.

That is ridiculous. EQ had just about the perfect amount of land mass to make travelling practical by foot at lower levels, then by mount, finally by port. The feeling of exploring a populated world was maintained. What use is all that land, even if they do manage to generate EQ-level game populations, which I doubt. AC2 was empty enough, same with Horizons. . .

Don't forget the game WWIIOnline. It has one of the largest maps available to this day. They pretty much modeled europe in half scale, no zones either. There was a comparison out a while ago where they compared it to SWG and other games, and it ruled them by alot, not sure how it compares to DandL though, i'll have to dig up the comparison.

    -Structure Fire - 11 Fire/Devices Blaster - Justice
    -Night.Stalker - VFA25 - Lo-Mac (yea, yea, it's not an MMORPG)
-Solister Thunderblade - 50 Pole, Thrust Arms - Pellinor (retired)
    -Splyt - 50 Skald - Tristan (reitred)
    -Sniper22 - WWII Online (semi-retired)

Yep, WWII Online is much larger than Dark and Light at 920,000 sq Km, or 23 times the size of DnL.

Strange EQ has a small world compared to many of this games but yet feels so large with some zones never seen by most players.

Yet when i played horizons the world felt so small.

SWG i knew it was big but fact that you can basically drive around most of the places in each planet and escape made it feel kind of small to me.

Remember sometimes what is realistic is not conveinant.  Who the hell would want to run for hours on end to get to a another town?  People don't essentially want realism, they do to a certain point, but when traveling becomes to enlongated, it becomes very stupid for the player, and very frusterating.

Everquest, WoW and other games have got it about good, they balanced out realism, and conveinance for the player.

I can't comment on WW2 FPS games ebcause I don't know anyhting about it.

large land mass is a waste...AO had a big world...how many zones had 0 players in them, any 25% zone was RARELY populated. Also who want to autorun for an hour just to get to the next place...it already took a few minutes to cross a zone in AO w/ a yalmaha...

oh BTW i like how the original poster mentions nothing of AO....could AO/SL landmass be bigger

i particulary like the idea of such a huge landmass, with no zones be even better... cause i liek to explore, thats one of my things. Its fun in a realistic enviroment to be able to explore it like you would run through a forest in real-life

and i played AO, together SL and RK is pretty big, even though most is uninhabited

I rather have a smaller world full with content than a huge world with too spread out content.

In AO most of the zones had nothing of interest, so noone went there.

I think DnL will have no problem with transportation, because you hace mounts like rideable dragons and thinks like that. Of course you´ll be able to teleport, to flight in a balloon and a lot of things like that.
But of course I thing a soooo huge map will have some zones with no interest.
I suposse all the mana fountains and strongholds in the map will make players travel by it.

Dark and Light is huge but u can travel easily and very fast. No auto-run needed lol.

Fly on a dragon, or use the teleport network (which is one goal of the PvP, like Castles, Kingdom ...), or a player who prepares a fight will teleport u near him. You don't have to walk hours to play. If u want to discover the land do it ...

Each Kingdom has differents interests : particular mobs, habitations, castles, vegetations, Gods. And people will own thoses places .. thats the political fearture associated with PvP.

In the last video avalable ( E3 trailer) u can see dragon, baloon, deltaplane, dodo, shieldboarding. It's very easy to move across the land.

P.S : I've just seen a comment on the hype page of DnL, so just want to react here. Vampire skill exist for one class : for exemple when u bite an ennemi he takes damage with the day light ...

DnL has many different ways to travel even for low levels so i dont think that walking from town to town will be an issue. I dont know much about DnL's dev's but for someone making accusations of the lageste world of whatever im sure they have thought of travel as an issue and will have ways to compensate for it. I think it would be awsome to have such a huge world because you could actually go somewhere and not have a million people camping the same areas, not that that wont possibly happen anyways but the chances are much smaller than a mmo with a smaller area.  I would love to be able to set up a house in a secluded area mabey in the middle of a forest or something and actually feel like im not just in the middle of a hundred people all around me.  It would just feel like its my own little piece of land that noone else will come too and that would be sweet.  Being able to fly around and  drop into some moutain and deploy a parachute (e3 video) and go fight something or sled down the mountain would be alot of fun to me. And knowing that all the area you fly over going from town to town is area that you could drop into sounds awsome. Then again everyone is different, this is just my opinion.  Im one of those people who just likes to explore, not saying i dont enjoy PvP and fighting as well.

I remember when i played SWG the land wase huge but there was NOBODY there. I could literally travel to 1 planet and their most populated city had 3 people... Exploring is really cool, one of my most favourite aspects of MMO's. But there is no point in having a huge mass if there's nothing there. I bet for Dark and Light they will probably just set a bunch of trees down here and there. Maybe a dessert here, swamp over there...

The only thing that i'm excited about in DnL is it would remind me of lord of the rings kinda. Getting your friends walking on a huge journey through the land...
