Ultima Online

DreakonDreakon Member Posts: 133

As you may have seen I have posted quite a few threads about people opinions of games in their current conditions compared to other games of the same genre. This threads different. I just want to hear your opinion of Ultima Online in it's current state. It seems to have everything I want, lots of content, lots of players, tons of professions and things to do other than fighting. But there a few thing I and many others can't seem to get past. For example the graphics are some of the worst in the MMORPG genre and for me personally the game does tend to get a bit boring especially when you are forced to play alone because it doesnt seem like much of a grouping game.

I am wondering should I give the game another chance? I have all the expansions including the newest one (Age of Shadows). I love the idea of owning my own house, possibly a Guild House and owning a boat and all that kind of fun stuff you can't really find in other games. I kind of want to hear opinions of people who have played it more recently.

Please, comment ::::39::

same as wendyX it was a good game but some parts could have been better

Would you recommend I try it again? I am a bit unsure since last time I played ( a few months to a year ago) I got bored of it kinda fast...

It was the best game ever but when I quit it was going to hell in a handbasket. I would never give it another chance unless playing on one of the pvp free shards. I couldnt give any loot to UO....they are sellouts.

  • DreakonDreakon Member Posts: 133

Mind elaborating on how exactly it went to hell in a handbasket?

For me UO is an ok mmorpg. Not the best ever i played but a descent mmorpg for sure.

Only thing against it is the age. While not a fan of over pretty graphics that makes my Gcard cry i do feel the graphics is just too old .If it was a human UO would be over 100 years old and look like a 100 year old man.

The graphics really arent that bad, they are really good for 2D. Besides, the game does have 3D, whether you like that kind of 3D is the question I guess.

It's funny, UO has the most content out of any game I have ever seen, yet its graphics are the worst. Yet as graphics gotten better, content has seemed to decline (CoH). I mean how many 3D games have you seen with completely designable houses and controlable boats?

Content-wise UO is leading I believe, graphic wise obviously it isnt, but the graphics really arent that bad considering the game was made in the late 90's. They even made a 3D client that doesnt look too bad for all you graphic whores ::::28::

yep graphics aren't everything.SWG has best graphics of any released mmorpg i know of .But it gets my thumbs down for gameplay and meaniful content.

The Activities you mention, housing, crafting and guilds are among UOs strongest points.

You can have great fun in journeying toward fulfilling those goals and I highly recommend the game in this capacitly.

Ultima Online is an awesome game, but really only if its your first MMORPG. Like, once you experience other 3D MMORPGs then its a bit hard to go back to UO as a full time MMORPG. I'm waiting on Everquest 2 because it looks ohh soo good!

I reccommend Star Wars Galaxies, that was a great game for a while, but then i had to leave because they nerfed my class. But im sure if you start playing it now, you'll have a kickass time! well all the best and good luck!

After I got bored of AO I went back to UO, hadn't played for 3-4 years, you get used to the old 2d graphic after 30 min and after that it doesn't matter at all if you have played other 3D MMORPGs.

My GF that never played UO before started when I went back to it and loves it, she have played several 3D MMORPGs before, but still have a great time.

There are so much to do in UO and you can go and do it right away, don't have to find a group, don't have to wait for others, just log in and do what you want.

I think the latest expansion ruined UO alittle bit tho, it got too concentrated around items and stat on them, was much better before when you used your GM made armor/weapon most of the time and it was possible to lose items when you died, now you just insure everything and stat on items are more important than ever..

UO was the best MMorpg by far i ever played. Great skill system no leveling treadmill.

Unfortunatly the game has changed to to the point of not recognizing it. They split the lands into two facets, but even though that was a major blow to the community. The big Wrecker was AOS expansion. They tried to make it EQ.

Its really sad to, its estimated that more people play the player run shards than, the actual game. Sad. UO use to be the best.

im getting into the "i miss my old characters" phase again ill prly reactivate my account soon but cancel it after i realize that my houses are still gone and my friends dont play anymore

Good game its just so out dated now

Its fallen to the wayside since they divided the lands up and I reckon it won't be far from cancelling due to its age

    WHo knows

I played UO for 3 years, I left after I got tired of all the exploiters, griefers and the complete lack of support. I went back once to try the Shadowlands expansion but could not find the fun and excitment I once had in this game. I still think the content is great and some great moments are available in the game for first time players. Owning your first house, taming a dragon, riding a Unicorn etc.

Its the only MMORPG that I have played that you can transfer items between characters on the same account without using a third party. I also liked the fact that all shards are available to all players and they do not have the USA/European split.

I am waiting to see what UOX ( if it ever gets released ) is going to be like.

They divided Fel/Tra 1999 or so...that's abit old argument...

EA is pumping in more money then ever in UO it seems, more devs, new expansion and so.

The shards are very much alive with tons of people at Brit bank and also other banks.

They have also changed things in Fel so more people should go there(Fel only dungeon, can only get some items there, better mining/lumber), removed some penalty for being a murderer to make it better for both PKillers and also for everyone that like more reward for more risk.

The graphic is outdated ofcourse, 2d is still nice imo tho, but the game is very much alive and kicking.

I loved UO and played it for many yearsimage.....i wish i could kill the dumbass that changed everything nice about it....tram AOS things like this....i will always love UO pre UOR the glory days of UOimage maybe someday they will remaster this game and bring back the glory but i'm doubting that image the content was the key to this game....no other game has come close...so many things to do....nonconsensual pvp was the shitz....ooohh the good ol' days....i play IPY now with just about every other old skool player. I pray that WoW will have enough content to keep me happy for a year or so if not then i pretty screwed!image i have played soooooooooooo many MMO's and none have what UO (pre UOR) gave us....i pray that one day there will be another game close to that but NEW and IMPROVED! damit!! EQ was ok but my opinion is UO PWNZ EQ!!   MUHAHAHAHA!!!!  NONCONSENSUAL PVP image

    Blah blah blah......

Sounds like a lot of people used to like the game. I did play AoS for a short time but I didnt really notice too much change from the old one. Then again I didnt really do to much but kill stuff with my swordsman.

Someone mind explaining what in the game was changed so drasticly from AoS?

image Oh my this was my first mmorpg ever and it brought a tear to my eye to remember the good in this game.

I remember going into the woods to chop trees to increase your strength, not every tree would produce wood then you would use that wood to make chests, seats etc.

Who remembers people spamming Weapons for sale at the bank(I cant remember the different lvls of weapons).

The ability to have vendors and sell man made items, regeants, armour, weapons etc.

Houses, nay castles you could have furnished with rare drops.

Own your own horse or boat. Go fishing for buried treasure.

PvP where you risked the chance of loosing a lot of items on death.

I could go on and on about this game in its day it was the daddy.  I find it hard to believe some games now a days pale in comparison to UO's content.

After that I went to AC and played on care bear servers which was ok but Darktide PvP server was excellent and probably the only game to rival UO(in my opinion in the PvP area).

Fond memories.  I hope the upcoming MMORPG's Saga of Vanguard/EQ2(Never played EQ)/Dark Empires etc.

Personally i think one of the biggest problems i find with playing MMORPG's is i spend 80% of the time playing a game with no interaction with others other than the shout channel.  There should be more emphasis on grouping and rewarding groups accordingly.

Anyway back to playing the sub par game of RYL how my standards have dropped :(

Poor is the man whoose pleasure depends on the permission off another

Dude, I completely know exactly what your talking about! I have the exact same memories! I joined UO around 5 months before the whole AoS came into play. I started off my char as a Tamer, but soon changed to a mage once i learnt a bit more about the game.

I remember when i first got my first set of leather armor and got it all dyed a Maroon Red.

Then i remember first being able to cast fireball and help my buddy out (who was a warrior) in the graveyard just outside of Britain.

Then i remember joining my buddy again as we went to Despise and hunted those Etins. After fighting there, we soon got a house! Our first house! Oh man it was sweet! Our very own house to ourselves!

Then i remember trying to purchase a suit which would allow me not to use reagents, and then i bought some but soon realized that i couldnt med. in it! So i had to sell it!

hah ah i was foolish, but it made stuff fun! And i loved UO for it. Im hoping that EQ2 wil provide the same luxury as UO did for me, and all i can do is wait!

I remember going to the graveyard outside of moonglow with my bardiche, running into a pker mage preying on weakened characters. He used invis/hide quite a bit. We chased him quite a ways before we were able to drop him. *sigh* THAT is what I miss in MMOs. UO just wasnt the same when I went back. The ability to buy characters? Houses EVERYWHERE (there were quite a few before, now its just pathetic) Splitting it into a PvP and non-PvP zone. It just doesnt have the atmosphere. I remember criss crossing the entire thing, evading gankers. Running into friendly guilds. Begging for things.

I still remember running into a group of orcs, only to discover that it was a player guild that dressed, and talked like orcs.

Isnt it odd, that UO which was released way back in 1997, had more replay than all the new games. Seriously in UO. You played the game, you enjoyed it. That was it. no treadmill whatsoever.

You had fun. You saved for a house, spar with your friends, hang out in town. Hit a dungeon,. no travel time whatsoever, recall or gate anywhere..

My God why does everygame copy the treadmill of death of EQ

Read the new PC gamer. They said the most overrated thing right now is the treadmill system in MMORpgs,,, but hey they all still use it. weird.

    Have you tried Siege?

It's as close to old school shard you can get on the official servers.
