I want to love this game, I do love this game. I am only level 7 on about 3 classes, but it just makes me feel like the game is just going to be one big grind without fun. I have a good amount of time to put into it, but I feel like no matter how much time I will never have the most fun I could.
*sigh* $60 down the drain (bought 2 one for me and one for my girlfriend)
Good luck in FFXI guys

now I need a game with a good bard class
I will say this - the beginning levels of FFXI are slow.. Well, slow isn't a good word. They're very "limited". The thing is they're this way deliberately. By level 7, you're still expected to be learning the game basics, learning your way around, getting acquainted with the battle system, doing some quests, etc. etc. Heck, the first 10-12 levels or so of the game are designed to be solo'd - it's the only time you'll find in the game where partying is actually *less* productive than soloing. By the time you start grouping up at around 10-12 or so, you find that the game steadily becomes more and more involved, more options are given to you and so forth. And, to be fair, once you know your way around, have leveled a few jobs up for a bit, etc.. those first ten levels become routine. I can get from 1 to 10 in an afternoon on most jobs, simply because of the experience of knowing the game better, knowing how to better prepare myself (which foods to use, etc) and so forth. They also go faster once you've gotten your first job to 18 and have unlocked your subjobs - having a subjob is something that (though some see it as a negative against the game because they simply want to race to 75 the first time) you find incredibly beneficial as you're leveling up as you gain benefits of the subjob as well as your main job.
In a sense, I do wish there were some way SE could find to show players a little more of what the battle/party dynamics are like earlier on, because in those first 10 levels or so is when the game seems to lose most of its new players (those who decide to leave anyway). And it's really a shame, because the game really does become *way* more involved and *way* more interesting the farther along you go and as more and more options open to you.
But again, the slower pacing of the beginning game is deliberate. It is *not* indicative of the game on the whole. Far from it. Think of the early levels like the foundation of a house. You're learning all the basics, from which the rest of the game will be built on.
Now as for it being "a major grind" - I've said this in another post on these forums, but I'll reitterate it here - if all a player is getting out of FFXI is a grind, then that's all they're putting into it. There are *tons* of things to do in this game, from level 1 to level 75, and beyond even. The trick is, you have to *do* them - and many don't. They get themselves on this leveling treadmill and don't look at anything else.. then they say "oh the game is nothing but a grind"... Well, duh...
The reason so many think there's nothing to do is because SE doesn't call your attention to the quests or missions or the like (a la WoW, EQII, etc). The idea is for you to either explore, try talking to NPCs and see what you find.. or.. interact with other players, talk to them and see what you can accomplish teamed up.
Tell ya what.. now that SE has included server selection when you create a character, if you want to give FFXI more of a try and would like to see a little more of what it has to offer... create a character on Pandemonium and look me up. My character's name is Shanree. I'm a 57 Dragoon, breathing on level 58. I'll be glad to come out to your starting city and help show you the ropes a little more.
If not, well, take care and I hope you find a game that provides what you're looking for.. Bard and all ..
