Regarding PvP...

raykorraykor Member UncommonPosts: 326

I realize that the emphasis of this game is on PvE; however, I have a question regarding PvP and I am hoping the rabid anti-PvPers can restrain themselves.

I haven’t done much research on this game because I tend to prefer games with a greater emphasis on PvP.  However, in MOGARMY’s recent GDC video, Garriott described several human factions which, while sharing the bane as a common enemy, had reason to oppose each other.

My question is: Has any information been released about possibly adding faction-based PvP content in the future, perhaps in an expansion?

The development team seems to still be working out how PvP will be handled. Garriott mentioned something about PvP turf wars and fictional faction battles for late game but not much has been said as to how the specifics of PvP will work.

Yea, this game seems really interesting( i love sci-fi games!) I've been quite curious about the pvp in this game too.

I'd link the TR knowledge base, but Stratics is pitifully slow as usual and keeps timing out on me (ducks to avoid _shadowmage) lol. But from what I recall they said PvP would pretty much be reserved for the elder game, and we could earn ranks (the higher rank, the more NPC soldiers would fight along with us or something like that). Supposedly it'll turn into quite the huge nasty fight over faction areas.

Has anyone heard weather there will be world pvp at any point in time of TR's life cycle?

Hmmm - I dont have a problem - but then I am in Australia so I am in the off-peak time.

one interesting thing to note for people who like PvP from the CuppaJo radio interview

There is, there is hand to hand combat it's one of the first skills you get right in boot camp. melee fighting in a lot of games is like you punch thats all you can do. But melee fighting in Tabula Rasa is if your using the melee fighting ability its punches and kicks. And then we actually have a staff one of the weapon is a staff. So thats a weapon you can use for melee based combat. And any weapon you use you can smash your enemy in the face with it. And thats pretty effective currently.

So not only can you shoot your foes, but you can hand-to-hand and even smack them with your rifle, pistol, rocket launcher, staff or set them on fire with a flame-thrower.

You also have those logos abilities to use on each other, and if you saw recent screenshots the ranger has a net gun so you can pin down your foes.

From the R.G interview it seems like PvP will be big in end game as you align with one of the factions and fight over the best way to save humanity.

So it seems there could be some decent PvP there. Hopefully quite a few people who really like PvP can get into closed beta and test the stuffing out of it and make sure it is fun and balanced.

i really hope this game turns out well. The fps controls acutally looked fun. Thats a lot more than i can say about A LOT of games interfaces and controls

Heh Stratics the win for slow websites, and with regard to the UO portion worse moderators than this site and website information that never updates, Their developer page has people working for UO from 2003 still listed.

Why would you need SOME1 to tell you which faction to aid/oppose, with an expansion ?

The point is for you to question your own beliefs and decide to turn your back on a line of conduct you don't copy with. Thus the ability to make your own faction. That's what roleplay's all about, questioning your ethics.

I don't think pvp is going to be a major portion of TR. I believe they all ready stated they'll have it, but what they have will be a limited amount most likely so don't except. Likely it'll have probably somewhere around the ballpark to the amount of pvp in WoW most likely with maybe  a little more or maybe a little less.

Likely, and probably and maybe and around and little more little less.

Do you know the first thing about it ? Methinks you wouldn't compare TR pvp to WoW, even indirectly as you just did.

YES!!! I expect the people who will play this game are people who enjoy co-op play a lot more then pwning some n00b. But I definatly think there will be some room for that too- at least a little.

I read that there may be high ranked faction battles where generals may be able to command up to 10 npc's. Thats going to be some awesome battles if its true! Apparently there is some ideas in the works of territorial gains for factions (bases?). I cant wait to see what they come up with!

TR is not rainbow-bear. It is the hardcore ideals of what our planet, and universe is becoming. A complete warzone. Get your guns ready.

In an interview yesterday with Gamespot, RG said that they were working on "clan versus clan warfare."  Interesting.

I just hope there is no reputation system implemented. All I need is to have to grind out pvp'ing to get a nice weapon or armor.
  • MuffinStumpMuffinStump Member UncommonPosts: 474

While I sometimes enjoy PvP in various games I think I would rather play the game and feel it out before making an opinion on whether PvP should be an integral part of TR.

Better to have a PvP-less environment than have it as an afterthought. Perhaps a PvP expansion would be warranted.

It may be that the game doesn't really require a core PvP experience and various arenas are established for a quick, fun but ultimately meaningless group battle. On the other hand if the lore and geography lend themselves to clan battles then perhaps a 'flag' system or pvp zone system might work.

Ah well, perhaps it might even evolve into something entirely new. I can hope....

    :)

I'm not a hardcore PvPer by any means (I prefer the FPS genre for true "player vs. player") but I enjoy it casually if there's any depth to it. I can see where in TR some good "clan vs. clan" for control points, or even having the Bane come into the battle. Both clans battle each other, but the Bane is a common enemy so more ethics choices -- do we help the other clan? If so, how much do we help, and how much do we let the Bane weaken our foes?

  • _Shadowmage_Shadowmage Member Posts: 1,459

Well you can battle Bane for control of outposts so maybe clan PvP will have outposts that clans can fight to control.

Or maybe you will have two or more clans competing for the same objective/mission.

this game wont have any sort of pvp really. its just gonna be tacked on like how they did City of heroes. better off joining the rest of us pvpers over at WAR or AoC forums. the fluffy carebears own this game no point in trying to get them to add pvp to a game focused on PvE

I agree if your main focus is PvP - then WAR or AOC or Huxley are more the game for you.

Personally I resent the 'fluffy carebear' insult.

But hey if the LEET PvP crowd could sustain a game then MMORPGs would be nothing but PvP clones. Carebear FTW.

So it won't have "any sort of pvp" yet pvp will be "tacked on." m'kay... It either has it or it doesn't. Got news for ya, it does.

Ooooh "fluffy carebears" such a dire insult, that one. Let me guess, you're one of the "l33t hardcore PvP" types who think PvP = Ganking n00bs? By all means, go to WAR, no one else will miss you.

Personally, I enjoy PvP but only if its done right. FFA ganking of lower level characters who can't defend themselves is not PvP, it's bullying and griefing. PvP should be compelling and meaningful; I should have a reason to want to fight other than "i pwn j00 n00b" which means nothing.
