I would say that when you find yourself going to bed thinking about the game, waking up thinking about the game, spending your day at work/school looking forward to what you're going to do in the game that evening, and then spending all evening playing, stopping to eat, but an hour or two after you started getting hungry, then playing a few hours past the time a sensible person would have gone to bed, that's when you know you're addicted to a game.
I'm sure you'll find plenty of people on this site with some great examples in their own lives...
Hmm, I think I'm not addicted. Okay, I confess, after I played the game, and when I go to sleep I think about what I've done this day, and what will come... But I can stop if I want, Iguess....

I think that pretty much settles it up. Also, if you change your daily habits to fit around your gaming or you let gaming effect your real life relations with people such as significant others / family / friends.
Obviously some people are farther along the path than others and not all things mention have to apply to hold true.
By the way **raises hand** Guild Wars addict...thankfully my wife is addicted to her hobbies, so it works out nicely.

I am sorta battling addiction to online gambling and I also was addicted to SWG when it was good but imo its easy to find the willpower to stop something thats not chemically dependent as I also had experience with that as well. Willpower has sorta worked for me but I am still trying to control the amount of time I spend playing poker.
Yall' are lowering down what the addiction is really like...People go playing a game for days, somebody died in a marathon gaming streak, that's being addicting to games.

Just because a gambler does not throw the deed to his house out on a hand, does not mean he is not addicted. As I hinted towards, there are different levels of addiction. If you think we are "lowering down" what addiction is in gaming...you are over simplifying it by just looking at the result as opposed to the actions that lead there. And we are in turn not are looking at the causes that lead to the actions. Each person is different, so results may very.

You are correct there are many levels and type of addiction, like I said before I experienced more than one form and I have a very addictive personality so I always have to be careful. When I was between 18-22 I was into hard drugs and crime which was a full time thing til I almost died of an OD which scared the hell out of me. I was lucky enough to have the willpower to stop with those poisons but now I battle addiction to gambling/alcohol and I guess weed but I think the weed would be the easiest to quit and ironically the one I would miss the most lol. Addiction can be anything to from sweets to smokes and I have even known a person who was addicted to sniffing freon!
I actually wonder how many people are not chemically or mentally dependent on something? I would assume the majority is addicted to something?

This may sound like a back-handed compliment, but I mean it seriously, congradulations on replacing a extremely deadly habit (drugs/crime) with other habits, while still dangerous to yourself and others, there is more help available. I can only hope you decide to go through an AA and GA program to help you overcome those. Those programs are so tedious that they become your habit if you truely want to change your path. You will never be able to stop being an addict, but you are able to channel it into other arena's.
As you said, addictions can be anything. Most people are highly addicted to caffine yet they would not even know it to the point where they would say it. Yet you will here them complain about headaches or tiredness when they don't get their moning cup of coffee, or did not buy a coke that day. They are addicts in ever sense of the term, yet they probably won't admit it.
Slickinfinit I wish you luck bro.

Thanks! I was lucky to have some brains and realize what a waste some things can be and even though I am really into online poker n stuff it doesn't effect my life as long as I keep winning lol but like I said before pretty much everybody is at least mildly addicted to something. I guess if one was addicted to vegetables and exercise it wouldn't be so bad?

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
