Ok so me and two buddies are going to start the free trial in a week. Two of us have played MMORPG since around 2000 and we are basically sick of the button mashing boring combat in the current offerings. We are both married with kids as well so cannot/will not devote the time needed for end game raiding that most games require. The more I have read about DDO the more I think this game may be perfect for us.
Anyway I have dredged through alot of outdated guides and such and could not find the answer to a few questions, so help if you can!
1) What is the death penatly?
2) What is the max # of people in a group?
3) How does mutli classing work? I know in AD&D elves could multi class and level each class whenever while humans had to dual class and once they changed could not go back. How does this work in DDO?
4) My two buddies are going to be tank & cleric and I'm the dps/utility in our trio. I am looking at maybe a bard/sorc or sorc/bard multi to fill this role. Any tips or comments on how this should be done? Would it be better to subclass rogue for thief skills?
Thanks!

I think DDO would be perfect for you and your friends. With the voice chat it is even better. To answer your questions...
1. You get exp debt. It isn't much and now you regenerate exp back while in town. I'm not sure if you regenerate it back while logged off. It isn't much and easily goes away doing a mission or two that I don't even think about it. You can use the rez shrines in dungeons more than once now.
2. Max number of people in a group is six. In a raid it is two groups, so 12 people. The raid is like for the Dragon(s) and the Titain and such.
3. I don't know much about multiclass maybe someone else can help you in that area.
4. I would suggest since your friends are going to be tank and cleric you might think about going rogue/ranger or something. The new traps are more engaging. They redid them because people complained you could just rush through them.
Hope that helps! There is a new open area now for low levels you and your friends can explore. It has quests and decent loot, specially if you get a named mob that has a chest. Oh and some chests are trapped.

So they actually made it so the traps spawn randomly and not in the same damn place everytime? I might dust off my old Rogue or start a new one if that's the case.
I hated... HATED that every single group I was in just did a blitzkreig through the dungeon with some assanine Barbarian Robot thing leading the way and crashing straight through every single trap.
The rush complaint is the one I hear the most. This will be neatly solved be leading our groups as a trio or with a few PUGS who join on the condition that we aren't going to rush through.
Thanks for the answers very helpful! I'll have to toy with the idea of rog/ranger but my main concern is will that leave us with no crowd control at all? Is it easier to find a pickup rog/ranger or sorc/bard ?
The traps being random is for the new stuff. If you were low level the traps are still in the same spot with the original dungeons. There is plenty of new dungeons! They just made them more interesting, more deadly. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe clerics have a mighty good crowd control. The one I grouped with in my guild the other day did a mighty fine job with it. Course he is level 12 I don't know the spells for low level clerics.
As for being rushed. I've said this many times. If you get into a group where people know the dungeon and you're new and don't want to rush TELL THEM. I have never been kicked from a group for being a newbie to a dungeon. In fact most will use voice chat and explain what is about to happen or may happen. The people in this game are very helpful and very friendly. Sure you're going to run into a rotten apple here and there but the majority are helpful.

DDO probally has the best tactical and dynamic combat system in any of the currently MMO's. It's very tactile thus player skill has an equal placement in the mechanics as the die roll.
I had never been a fan of scripted and/or directed content yet I find DDO to be the best MMO on market for my tastes. I am not a fan of FPS type of games which could proove odd since DDO's controls are semi-twitch. Having to shield block in the proper direction to fend off archers is pretty cool!
The OP made a presentation that their group of friends will likely be playing casually. The required times to complete quests vary greatly. A short quest can take from 5-20 minutes. A very long from 30min-4hours.
DPS? I play an Elven Sorcerer. It's the only character I play and I've had it since the game launched. I quit playing a month after DDO came out due to poor and limited content. I returned about 6 weeks ago and think the game is currently at the level it should have been upon launch. That being said, the game rocks! I cannot think of anything on the market that's remotely equal in quality, in terms of gaming mechanics and required strategy, then Dungeon & Dragons Online; well, there is EVE Online, but that's a different kind of game.
p.s. Do not come into the game expectig it to be like AD&D. I played and DM'd that for "years" and this is nothing like it. If you end up playing on Ghallanda, add "mindspat" to a friends list and hit me up if I'm on.
I just want to add to this and say if the three of you pick up the game and decide to stay, get the DVD version of the game. You can find it pretty cheap off amazon.com or maybe locally.
The DVD version has the high-res textures and in my opinion make the game look a lot better. I got my copy off amazon for 9 dollars. I think it has since gone up last I checked to 14.99. Still a good buy.

Wow I just found that copy on amazon. This has accelerated my play schedule since it takes time to ship (3-4 days prior to shipping) and it claims to only have 4 remaning at that price. Beats the hell outta $50 at best buy! I'm gonna load this up this afternoon and at least get a feel for the interface and such. Any servers that are better or worse?

I think Adar and Argonnessen have the highest populations. I play on Ghallanda and the population is ok. I see lots of regular names and occasionally get "Hey Mindspat, this is so-and-so!! What's up!" from names I don't recognize.
You did buy the DVD version right? If you wanted the high-res textures they only come on the DVD version of the game. Reason I ask is I just did a search on amazon and the 9.99 version was the CD and the DVD version was 14.99. If I did the search right...

I didn't have much time to play last night (chores and my 8 year old wanted to play planetside with me), but I did get thru the first noob quest with a halflig bard and then did 3-4 solo lvl 1 quests. Defeinatly a fun little game and I anticipate ordering it today. And yes I'm getting the DVD version for sure.
My only complaint so far is that I hate the way halflings run all hunched over. Pretty minor haha.
I'd say to hit me up for some gaming although I wouldn't have my ISP established until the 22nd.
heh Halflings smell almost as bad as the Dwarves!
