Destructible Player housing

What if a game had Destructible Player housing. You could make prelayed out  and pre-zoned areas just like how real cities are designed. Thier could be walls around them and guards along with guard towers. The more buildings that are in a city the better the protection. What if you could raid a city made up of player housing and after taking over the city could loot the buildings? or burn them to the ground? just a idea

brilliant, ive toyed with this idea before, im one of the people that believes that EVERY FACET of MMOs could be done much better.

And i know the argument will come up about how developers simply "CANNOT" do this for some reason or another, but a game that is well made can pull of virtually anything, thats the beauty of virtual worlds, there are no restrictions.

Destructible Objects is a new feature in single player games.  Won't be coming to mmos for atleast 5 years.  Also won't be getting it until the US upgrades its network connection.  Getting a link powerful enough to tell realtime destruction data would be monsterous.

If it was zoned right with the not a lot of space between buildings and it was much like a real city with diffrent distracts and what about bazzars? they could pop up for a few hours a day and be really cheap? and what about the rouge classes could they break in and steal stuff? but maybe it wouldnt be easy and maybe a bounty could be placed on thier heads that other bounty hunter players could go after?

    Shadowbane

I have never played shadowbane sorry. I guess what im getting at is that it was really fun to break into houses in oblivion why not do it online? and maybe you could hire guards for a fee? maybe buy better locks? and thier should be plenty of guards in big towns. Once you buy a house it should be yours but the taxes could be used to hire more guards! and maybe a community could agree to hire more guards? and would pay higher taxes? Also what if more taxes where paid thier would be guard towers built? and you could actually see new guards being trained?

any game with stealing would HAVE to be class based, well for it to be "balanced" in the stealing department

    um wurm online.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Shadowbane has player built cities, can get guards, etc.

That link is an overview of city building.

Also an old UO shard (private server) use to have player houses/castles with guards that could be trained individually like a separate skill system. Forgot the name of it. I think it was called Lost Felucca...I don't remember, too long ago

    i think.... i was just....... pwn'd

acutally i did read it but i guess im saying thier should be a mixture of npc buildings and player ownd buildings. Its hard for me to explain exactly give me a day to think about it and i will repost. I need to rethink this

wurm online is 99.99999999% player ran(for the enviroment)

yes but I really dont want to go down that path. How about i throw another idea in the mix. What if the NPC's of the opposite faction or a group of npc thieves or a band of outlaws could attack the town? not all the time and it should be scheduled but how about a bunch of diffrent variables that determine when and what happens?
  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613
wild server doesn't need scripting for a band of thieves to come to your town.  (woot for the wild)

the thing is that i think developers could use this idea to create a great game. i really dont think players should have to worry about creating the game they play..... funny cuss i love second life..... go figure...

The only problem I can see from things like this is when server swings come into play.

You could see this happening a lot in games like Daoc.

During a certain time the population is normal and things go as planned. After hours

the "night crew" or whatever comes in, pillages the city(s) of the opposite alignment

or whatever. Then the "day crew" comes back, rebuilds, pillages the night crew.

Its a constant circle of just rebuilding - raiding, with a few golden hours when both

    crews are on.

I use this kind of example because I would image that a game with raiding cities/stealing

has pvp and some sort of faction/alignment system.

Also, where one finds the ability to thieve from fellow players, one finds a game of almost

    pure thieves....

Hot damn, I just gave that a little though. A MMO with a pure thief/rogue pbase with assassinations

and thieving could be pretty sweet.

oh about the npc's in the area from the local fort/castle? would be called forth incase of a invasion in non peak hours? and the bounty's would make a good thief a dead man walking the the green mile

I'm guessing you've never played Dark Age of Camelot: New Frontiers. Destructible castles are in the game already...not to mention Shadowbane cities.

My only issue with this is player owned housing is freaking expensive. I don't have time to play all the time so there are long periods of time that my investments will be undefended completely. I didn't play Shadowbane beyond the first month or so because I don't like the big guild mentality and that game requires it to have anything substantial. I pumped 20-30 platinum into my DAoC houses. That's a major investment of time to have some numbnut come along and just be able to destroy it at random when I was offline and not able to defend it.

I like the idea of destructible structures, but the current trend of hella-expensive player owned housing would completely push me away from the system. I play games to have fun. Losing a ton of money that I have to go back and farm for all over again is not fun. It's not something I would take part in, ever.

I think in SWG (pre cu anyways) you could place faction bases in the world and the enemy faction can attack and take the bases down.  It isnt as elaborate as DAoC but it was amusing still!

You can still blow bases up in SWG :)

You'll also be able to call a bomber down on abandoned houses and blow em up in the next few months.  Although, not really what the OP was looking for heh.

Well Eve already has destroyable "housing" although we have to build our own "houses" first.

House in Eve = POS (player owned station: comes in Small, Medium and Large)  although you need a fair amount of firepower to take them down

Try out wurm online on wild, there will you see real PvP with player made cities.
  • AelfinnAelfinn Member Posts: 3,857
Yes yes yes, we know that Shadowbane has destructible player cities. So does AoC, and that's not falling apart, being supported on a few sympathetic dev's pocket money who have time to do nothing more than keep the servers running. In both cases however, its not entirely what he asked for.

Oops I was thinking about Physics driven destructibility.  The destruction in Shadowbane and other games is pre-made destruction which makes it... predictable.
