Best mmorpg for PUG play?

What game(s) have the best PUG (Pick Up Group) community. I am looking for one where you can easily find a group of people to do a mission/quest/adventure without needing to be some type of Clan.

You  can type LFG in CoV/CoH and be invited in a few minutes. Very easy to get in and out of a group.

     Fixed.

And I can't believe there are already 2 responses! Is this place that active? I have been coming here for a while, but this is the first time I checked the forums out.

What is better CoV or CoH? I am a little confused as it looks like two games, but people talk about it like it is one game. I guess I am asking which one should I purchase. Or is it based on if i want to be evil or not?

Guild Wars seems pretty condusive to this type of play.  I have not nearly reached "end-game" though so it could change.

Guildwars has nerfed PUG play which is the whole reason for this topic. In the first GW there was a very active PUG community. I stopped playing for a while and recently came back and purchased the latest GW only to find that PUG play is dead. You now need to play solo with what they call Heroes or with a Guild. The problem with the Guild is someone will help you, but it is a higher level person that just rushes you through a quest. I like to play with people that actually have to do the quest also.

CoH/CoV is sounding pretty interesting right now.

If you get the Good Vs Evil edition, you get the 2 games at once, and you only have 1 monthly fee for both. You can have hero or Villain on the same server.

Also CoV/CoH is a very casual game. Do not rush to the end as there isn't a lot to do there. The game is all about the journey to the end, and I must say it is a VERY epic journey.

Anyone know of a Free Trial for CoX?

    Also true!

But what is fun in CoX, is the amount of different power set and class you can do. Character creation is the best by far, hard to find someone in a group tha looks like you and have the same power sets.

EDIT: I mean by that is, it has a very good replay value.

it's pretty darn easy to find a PUG in World of Warcraft, of course, especially if you play on the Alliance side. The sheer number of players on any given server means there will most likely always be people wanting/waiting to do the same thing you are.

At high levels, where the content becomes much more difficult, PUG's can be disasterous. This is why guilds help a lot.

There is a new Free Trial for The Burning Crusade you should check out, but I guess you'd have to have the original WoW intalled first.

As with many/most/all MMO's, you won't get to the level of content that normally requires group play until later on. So, you may never have to group during the trial period of play, unless you play a LOT and level up quickly.

I was told you do not really see PUG play till much later in the game. And I am a casual player that does not play a lot so it will take me even longer.

I just purchased Good vs Evil (CoX) so we will see how this goes. It sucks about GW Nightfall as I bought that game less then a week ago, but I am going to shelve it as I don't like playing solo so much.

City of Heroes/City of Villains is the best I've seen (and I've played a ton of MMORPGS) for pugs because you can pretty much engage in any mission that any of the group members have, and most are repeatable. It's quite cool. Really easy to PUG.

Another great PUG game is WoW because of the sheer number of people.

Also no matter what level you are in CoX you can raise or lower your level depending on the group/friend. It's not as simple as I said, but it's something like that.

You were stuck playing solo in Nightfall?  Or were you doing the intro stuff?  If it has that.  In Prophecies up until about level 7-8 you are doing everything solo but its just the intro missions.  Once I got post Searing, I did the first Mission and was amazed how easy it was to find a PUG right outside the instance.  The system they have where you can see how many party members a person has over their heads made it very very easy to just click on a few people and see if I could join.

    Just curious how Nightfall differs.

Yes, solo in Nightfall. You are right about Prophecies. For the first 4-6 levels you are mainly Solo and learning the game. After that you have PUGS all over the place wanting to play with you. In Nightfall though finding a PUG is much harder and impossible in some areas.  And this is for the whole game, not just the beginning as my character was level 18 before i gave up on it.  If you like Solo play or Guild play where someone can just rush you through everything then Nightfall is for you. If you want to group with random people who are also trying to complete the same quest as you then you are not going to find it in Nightfall.

CoH/CoV is the most PUG friendly game I have seen.  It wasn’t always so because at one time people preferred to solo, but now even without your LFG flag up you are often spammed with invites. It gets to the point of annoying at times.

City of heroes for sure. It's very easy to get into a group, and just raid a base. Not much arguing about which quest to do, and I find the community is very mature as well.

You are 100% correct.  PUG in WoW are actually VERY,  VERY bad.  Mostly immature community.  People only do PUGs when it becomes neccessary to advance their character in some way.  They never do it for enjoyment of playing the game.

In short,  if you play WoW stick with your guild.

Guild Wars Prophecies is the best PUG gameplay. You can try a level, fail, dump the group and find another group instantly until you complete the quest. Not sure on its population but its like $10 to find out.

In CoV/CoH as other point out, the game is extremely friendly to pick-up group.

I will add a few key points I feel where underestimated:

    - Sidekick/Examplar (Lackey/Malefact), no matter your level, no matter the other person level, you can group!  What can be more PUG friendly then allowing a level 50 and a level 10 to group together?

    - The game is extremely solo-friendly, so if you are LFG and for any reason you are not getting a group, well, you can solo until you get a group...which usually happen extremely fast, especially if youn start soloing and just enter a mission!

    - Unless you choose to /hide, peoples know that you are not grouped.  Expect them to invite you or send you tells.  If you want to solo without been offer groups, you really need to use /hide.

    - Friend list, global friends list(account based), channel lists...

    - You don't need a guild, villain group, super group.  You will never feels shafted to not have join a particuliar guild, you will prolly join 1, based on your guts and how you feel.

    - Many specialised channels, so once you start liking a type of activity in the game, join the specialise channel for increasing your opportunities.  Since tracking you when you are on another character might be hard, but if you are on the channel, piece of cake, you see the opportunities and can join them, even if you where on another character for any reason.

    - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
