EQ2 vs. LOTRO

I'm thinking about which one to get but I just can't decide!  The problem I have with lotro is that it only has four race, but I like the classes better.  So really I just want to know which game you think is better.

Thanx!

Tested both in beta/release and have ordered a lifetime for lotro and it seems like lotro is more polished and runs better on low end PC's even with the nice graphics.

They are quite similar in a lot of ways so you can't say one is bad and one is good.

They are both very good games.

The reason i stopped in EQ II was not because the game sucked but simply because SOE got to greedy and charged extra money for small updates with extra dungeons and certain features on their webpage.

I thought that was a bit to greedy so i left a few months after release.

You can always try out the freebie EQ II trial they have.

That gives you a clue how that game is.

For LOTRO you probably have to buy it and see if you like it or wait for some reviews.

    I love both games.

I also played EQII since beta  right up till I started beta testing LoTRO and am planning on the lifetime for LoTRO now. They are both great games, you won't go wrong with either one.

I tried to like EQ2 and just couldn't. For me the plastic graphics were a huge distraction and the game world didn't feel realistic to me.

I find the graphics in game with LotRO to be better (subjective I know) and just more immersive. I find the terrain and landscapes in LotRO to be better and more realistic in design than any other MMORPG I have ever played.

LotRO has something about it that's just very refreshing, even if you can't put your finger on it. EQ2 will always be there as a stand by when all else fails for some people, but it's nothing to get excited about, where as LotRO has been slowly building some seriously positive buzz as fans and sceptics have taken the time to really try it out.

    EQ2 > LOTRO

Although both have tons of zones, EQ2 has at least a little depth to it.

    LOTRO...why?

Well here is the big differences

LOTRO: Doesn't plan to have 1,000,000 expansions you have to buy, sure it isn't released yet...so I dunno if it will have 1mill expansions, but they said that wasn't gonna happen.

EQ2: Has 1,000,000 you have to buy (well not 1mill, but sure seems like it)

LOTRO: Not much zoning except inside buildings or storyline quests...which isn't often (at least not for me)

EQ2: Every little plot of land has a zone in it, I zoned every 10minutes to get to the next part of the world

oh and big thing, EQ2=SOE, they have had many unsuccessful releases...the latest one being Vanguard...now that was a big grade A+ sucker...EQ2 could change in a heartbeat in a patch, SOE has a habit of changing gameplay around once they see they aren't doing as well as they hoped...one day you'll be played EQ2, the next day you could be playing something totally different

although, EQ2 is sorta fun for a couple weeks, but I got tired of it. It does have a lot of content so, but its been out longer...but its only available if you buy all those expansions. I prefer LOTRO myself. I find it more addicting and fun, but it does help that I'm in a good guild.

thier both GREAT games but it really comes down to this.

Are you a CASUAL gamer or do you prefer to LIVE in your game?

If your casual i would go with lotro and for players who like to live in the world that they play in i would say Everquest 2

I would say if you should go with LotRO just for the simple fact EQ2 has been out quite some time and it might be hard to establish a player in an economy based on people buying low items at high prices for their alts.

Yes, I played EQ2 for 2 years but I also couldn't keep up with adventure packs and expansions so I said fuck it.

Actually, I don't find it to be that simple. Yes, LotRO is casual friendly, you can play for small snippets and still feel you've accomplished something. However, LotRO provides the first MMO environment for me since pre-NGE SWG where I feel I can "live" in the world.

EQ2, of course, with all it's expansions has more to keep you busy off the bat than LotRO, but with a leak today of just a glimpse of what is scheduled for the first free content module for LotRO in may, it's clear Turbine plans a very agressive expansion of the game through free monthly content updates. Only a super power gamer is likely to hit a wall were they run out content before new content is released. (A new 27+ zone North of the Shire and a big expansion to the Music system are a couple highlights leaked for the first monthly content module).

I love questing in the Shire, it feels like a real living world if you let yourself get into it. The Bree-lands West of Bree are great for explorers. When you hit 15 if you want a challenge, head to the Lonely Lands and scale Weathertop. It offers quite a view.

Erud Luin probably feels the most like other MMOs of the level 1 to 15 areas, it has some highlights, but if you play an Elf or a Dwarf it's easy to head to The Shire around level 8. Head to Little Delving north of Michel Delving and start the zone where the Hobbits do.

Both games are pretty much carebear, but I believe Lotr will reach #2 in North America and Europe as for Asia it will probably fall in rankings cause it's got basically no pvp.

Plus Lotr will probably release tons of free content, and there's potential for a larger and more huggy bear world for the carebears to enjoy. As for EQ 2, it will lose some numbers but it wont die it will be around still in the  MMORPG garbage heap pile that is SONY. One of the good thing is about Lotr that it will squeeze Sony, and those guys need to be squeezed and punished for making games that end up being in beta 2 years after release.

i'd go with eq2 no question about it. 90% of the people who have anything bad to say about it always bring up soe well they've screwed up games before but this isn't one of them. lotro is an ok game but it is so bland and lacks depth only the die hard  lotr "book" fans will play longer than 6 months.

This and EQ2's constant zoning are the only two legitimate gripes I've read on MMORG. com. Sometime after POP's release in EQI the wise ones at SOE decided to change their buisness model as follows.

    A) Rush out at least two expansions per year.

    B) Charge for any added content.

This just rubs me the wrong way especially since games like CoX & L2 drop in free content updates like pennies.

So if you're looking for honest pros LOTRO has over EQII there's two for ya.

You really don't zone very much in LoTRO, in and out of buildings and the epic series of quests is about it really The 1st 5 or 6 lvls is in a instance then it is pretty much one big world other than some buildings. The epic series of quests are all zoned and that is really about it. Going in or out of a building takes me about a second, nothing major. EQII zoning seems sluggish in comparison.

OP:  I really don't comment on vs.  posts but in this one instance, I am.  I'm not a fanboy of EQ2.  I've played it.  I like it a lot.  I think its great.   Everybody complains about the instancing.  In a matter they're right.  I don't like waiting 10 secs when I wanna get somewhere fast.

I was in the first closed beta of LOTRO.   I just couldn't get into it.   After about a month I gave up and quit wasting Turbines time.   EQ2 IMHO is a far superior game.   But my opinion like most its just that.   Figure it out for yourself.

I'm not taking anything away from LOTRO.   But like I said in my OPINION... I'd rather watch the movies than set foot in a bland hodgepodge mmo of it. <shrugs>

PS:  Echos was a really good expansion.

    Both are great games

But i would chose LOTRO , and the reason is simple : LOTRO is new game , new community , lot of players

While EQ2 is slowly fading away , 99% of players are in their max level and it would be pretty lonely to play from lvl 1 ...

So it is hardly a dilema

This is actually one of my peeves about the game.  To me, it seems like they put a LOT more time and effort into The Shire than they did into either Ered Luin or Breelands.  The latter two both feel more generic -- as you say there are highlights, but in many areas they feel more like a lot of other MMOs.  The Shire does not feel generic, and really feels like it got the Lion's Share of the work -- and it shows.  That's great, because it makes The Shire fun, but it's not so great for the other lowbie zones, I think.

As a newer player to EQ2 I would have to argue that.  There are a LOT of new players, or at least new characters in the most recent expansion area.   I started up a month ago and never felt like it was deserted or anything like that.  It seemed quite healthy to me for a game that has been out as long as it has.

    I would play both.

I am done with eq2, but it was the best MMO experience I had. The game is very polished now as well. Its really a fun game with alot to offer. I really envy your position, i wish i had not played eq2 and could start it now. However, after spending so much time with that game I really can't go on with it.

That said, LOTRO is a wonderful game, great graphics, fantastic evolving storyline ( yes story in an MMO ).

LOTRO is my new getaway from RL.

I'll agree that AoC is going to rock.  But, Guild Wars kinda blows imo.  The way you max your characters end game is just, I don't know... dumb?

    I choose neither........

They both lack the open and engaging experience that EQ had in its good old days. All of these second and third generation MMO are like weak sauce. It is as if they are xerox copies of the mona lisa each one more faded than the last. It is like EQ minus a soul.

There's still a little bit of time left to give LotRO a free trial (this weekend) so see if you enjoy it.  Same with EQ 2, give that one a trial as well and chose whichever play style you prefer.
