The friends we make playing the game are on the other side of the computer not the avatar running around with all of your uber stuff.
I have no love for Raph Koster. None what so ever. But he once said something I think takes precedence here. He said that MMOs are more then just games. And I think he is right. Your dealing with a virtual world here. Not some deathmatch or RTS map that comes up once every 4 hours. Its a living breathing community. A society in and of itself.

But you said a game and mentioned sports games. So lets take a look at that shall we? What do you think would happen, if next week, the NFL, CFL, NCAA, etc all made huge dramatic changes to football and totally ruined the game? Imagine it. A major announcement that next football season violence would be removed and it would be replaced with flag football. How about if Nascar said for now on races would be done in soapbox derby cars?

How about a board game like chess? What if the group that handled that said for now on chess moves would be one square for every piece no matter what?

Do you honestly think those people would just say "Oh its just a game anyway"? Hell no. That kinda thing would make the major airwaves. People would be picketing the major offices and there would be utter pandemonium. In all honesty I think the vets that lost SWG are handling things quite well by comparison.

This is what I don't understand. What do the server statistics actually mean ( i.e. light, medium, heavy... etc.)?

How can a server that is "loading" be "very light"? Shouldn't it be "empty"?

All you people screaming about player created content during preCU or CU really need to get your head examined. There was no more player created content then than there is now. It could be argued that there is (or will be) more player created content NOW with the upcoming abilities for players to name and place NPCs and such (kinda like a mini-Pex). Creating 'unique' template (that hundreds of other players had besides you - you are NOT a unique and beautiful snowflake, sorry) wasn't player created content no matter how much you tell yourself it was. Everyone laments about how you could explore preCU. You can still explore NOW. Problem is, you've seen everything a couple hundred times.
    It wasn't a sandbox.

If you hate it, get over it. Move on.

We had this ability Pre-CU, including laying down crashed vehicles (and many other "Set" pices), Placing NPC's with user made dialog, Placed flags, and chests that you could put items inside... So, this was in game Pre-CU, if its just now coming back...well..thats sad.

You still can. They never went anywhere. In fact, they're being improved.

Yep. I used these tools a few times myself.

Same I used the tools all the time and put little stories out with good rewards at the end like Upper ended weapons that I made.... I always had a jukebox playing in my weaponshop,  As well as a lambda shuttle or TIE outside the shop... Sometimes even a Jawa camp and Crawler.  So yea get over yourself this isn't NEW it's just returning... BTW the NPC's used to be able to say whatever you wanted them to say so yea you could tell a story!.... Howver Jacktards with the attitude you displayed used them to badmouth people in the game and got that ability removed.

The Cabal is out to tear down SOE.  By economic ruination.  Democracy is more than voting for politicians.  It's also voting with dollars.  If enough of the market votes against SOE with their dollars, SOE goes away.  It already looks like the ultimate failure of the company is as inevitable today as the collapse of the Soviet Union was at the start of 1989.

Simply put, SOE no longer is able to control the MMO genre (at one time it basically had the same dominance  in 2000-2004 (in what was then a smaller industry) that Blizzard does now. So, they were able to get away with release early, release incomplete, release buggy, abuse customers, etc.  Now they can't.

In an era dominated by polish, completeness, and "it just works" (which best describes WoW) SOE is a lumbering dinosaur, supporting many different failed games still operating on the "shove up their rear and make them buy their own lube" model that worked back when the alternatives were EQ1 and... nothing else if you wanted a large community and an advanced game.

They are incapable of change, which will lead to their demise.  It is amazing to me that senior management at SOE wasn't sacked years ago.  Until there is a management change cultural change is impossible.  Had they fired Smed and his management team back in 2004 after EQ2 flopped and WoW ran away with the market the company may have recovered by now.  At this time I think they are too far gone to ever recover, as they've done nothing but shoot off every toe on both feet with every move they've made since.

SOE will die when the DC game flops.

SWG turned out to be the perfect storm of mismanagement, with the collision of two incompetent, greedy, overconfident management teams (Smed and Ward) with a sociopathic disregard for their customers.  Only that mindset could have even imagined doing the CUNGE.  Only they could have turned what was a moderately successful, stable player base of 250,000 into abject failure in a matter of weeks.  It would be impossible to recreate even if a deliberately evil manager TRIED.

SWG will close shortly after the release of Star Trek Online, if that game turns out to be good.  There is much overlap between the fan bases of both, and right now what is keeping most in SWG (the tiny population left) is the fact that it's the SOLE Sci-Fi MMO out there with a ground game, a large world, and a space game.  When STO comes out and launches with a million subs (as it very well may) and they lose half of what they have left in SWG to it, they will pull the plug.

Most devs will say, be courteous, there are real people behind the avatars. MMO developers design their games to immerse players in their game, so it’s ok to take pride in your accomplishments, that’s working as intended. It’s also ok to be unhappy about a change or upset over loss of friends in a game. It may take longer for some people to get over it then others, this doesn’t make you lame a retarded. I think if none of this affects you in some way then you are either anit-social or would do better to stick with single player games since you place no value on friendships with other players in a game. Maybe you can just get over it faster. Everyone is different.

    Sure thing.

WOW! You thought of this all by yourself!??? I'm amazed at your extraordinary powers of abstract thinking! Who would ever thunk that other companies looking to get a piece of the MMO pie from 1999 onward would effectively shrink SOE's marketshare, back when EQ was essentially the only game in town?

And of course, it was only SOE that released buggy / incomplete programs. Shadowbane worked perfectly from the beginning. As did EVERY SINGLE MMO ON THE MARKET!! They all worked flawlessly!

SWG should have merged servers 6 months ago

SWG should have slowly just maintained what they had and make no promises of the future..

(Kinda like saying, no expansions, or adding of planets like they did in the last chat)

There is no future at all for this game..

Right now it rides on the License and LA/SOE contracts, they have pretty much got rid of all the people involved, or they quit... there is very very little left of what the game was and now they are pretty much just riding it out.

Sorry--- adding back CH or changing a Theme park to have different NPCs in it and calling it new is a freaking unreal joke and insult to anyone with common sense.

    --- I mean really...

HERE IS A NEW THING!!! ITS CALLED BEAST MASTER YEAH!!!!!!! YOUR OWN PETS FOLKS!!! NEWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't have to read the OP to know that, he made it.  Like most of the NGE/SOE fanbois, he shows a great lack of knowledge of what was in the pre-NGE game.  Yet, it doesn't seem to restrain his zeal.

Chess and sports are not immersive virtual reality environments.  Those that invest emotionally into their online identities, accomplishments and communities feel emotional pain when these are lost or taken away.  This is a psychological reality.  Those that haven't made this investment will not experience the loss in the same way.  I'd encourage you to recognize that you may be missing something that makes it difficult for you to experience some empathy with people whose experiences differ from your own.

Good points with the changing football example.  "No tackling now, it's been deemed unsafe and is bad role-modelling for children" lol.  My brother in law would have kittens :)  I also agree with Mr. Koster as per my earlier post.

Its more like.  American football is not "footbally" or "iconic".  So we have changed the ball to be round with octogon patches.  We have implimented soccer rules.  All your teams names have been changed to Manchester united.  Currently the goalie and striker positions are broken.  We have removed linebacker, quarterback, running back, tackle, guard, cornerback, renamed safety to midfielder, and changed DE to defense and DT to Goalie.   Instituted cool crowd effects like "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL" and "OLE OLE OLE".

we are really excite about making our game of football more true to the traditional game of futball.  The game should be much faster paced without so many breaks between plays for commericals.  Referee's now hand out red cards.

well .... i did it ... spend the whole saturday on installing and updating SWG, started playing on sunday.

After a day of playing, i got the hang of my new skills, experience trees and all "novelties' introduced since i left shortly after CURB.

And then it only took another day before i asked that same question again ... what to do ???

Emptied the geo-caves ... fought halfway through DWB ... emptied NS stronghold and butchered some imps in Theed. After that i found myself standing at the starport, not knowing where to go.

The first few hours ... i actually felt really sad about the lack of people, and the long list of offline peeps on my friendlist. Made me sick .... homesick if you will :)

    It must end.
