Sword of the New World: Dev Journal

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Grantley Day, the Vice President of Product Development for Sword of the New World, pens this short developer journal that gives us an overview of the game.

Sword of the New World: Granado Espada (SNW) is a MMORPG set in the vain of a traditional MMORPGs, think NWN2 in an MMO world or Dungeon Siege 2 in an MMO world. I bring up those two titles because of the key feature that sets SNW above every other MMORPG in the market and coming into the market in 2007. This key feature is the concept of Multiple Character Control (MCC). In SNW you don't control a single warrior type or caster type or even healer type, in SNW you are given the option to create a party of THREE characters to explore and conquer the SNW world. That party can be any makeup you choose, Fighter, Caster, Healer or Caster, Caster, Healer or Fighter, Fighter, Healer, etc.

The development of 'Granado Espada' started in April 2003, at the same time 'imcGAMES' was established. In February 2006, 'imcGAMES' started the open beta service in Korea, and in the same year, 'imcGAMES' serviced both the open beta and the commercial launch in Japan, and also serviced the open beta in Thailand. 'Granado Espada' was the winner of the 2006 Grand Award for Best Game in Korea. Gamers highly valued the creative game system and appreciated the beautiful graphics, the dynamic action, the fast- paced gameplay, multi character control system, and the NPC creation, etc.

"the game really exemplifies the Area of Effect (AOE) damage dealers and every class has an AOE ability that allows them to deal significant damage to large groups of monsters. The game is not designed to take 60 seconds to kill one monster, collect its loot and then move to the next monster, it is designed to kill 100 monsters in 60 seconds, and then spend the next 60 seconds collecting all the dropped loot."

To avoid some confusing, the game is not AoE grind in the way of ArchLord, Lineage 2 and WoW. you don't run around collecting mobs, putting them in one place and then cast an AoE spell. There are lots of monsters that will keep storming at you, so you don't have to run around. Also, you don't HAVE to AoE at all. all monsters die quite fast, so you can use normal attacks and 1 enemy skills, just like in other MMORPG's.

Also the last part is a bit incorrect. you do indeed kill around 100 monsters in 60 seconds, but you don't spend 60 boring seconds just picking up loot. There is a loot pick up macro build in the game, when you use it, all of your characters will start picking up loot (you don't have to click on each item seperatly). This doesn't take longer then 5 or 10 seconds at most.

so, will this game have a player run economy and politics? will there be meaningfull crafting and resource harvesting? will pvp be non-consentual? or will it be just another pointless grind single-player-on-the-internet game?

vain: excessively proud, ineffectual or unsuccessful, without any real significance, value or importance

I think you meant vein, as in its 11th meaning: a tendency, quality, or strain traceable in character, conduct, writing, etc

I'm surprised there wasn't more "substance" in this diary. Most of this stuff has been hit upon before. Game looks good though...can't wait to get in.

I beta tested it, and imo it is a great game. The gameplay is unique and the different stances give the game some variety. The only complaint i had about the game is the lack of player interaction, at least early on in the game. Since you control 3 chars it is not necessary to party up, so at times it felt like a solo game. But i did get to meet some people and i had a lot of fun. Its rly worth checking out.

I would love to play a MMO with 17th century feel. This game however is not that. When characters wield swords as large as they are it turns me off.  I would perfer it would not try to be historical at all.

This game is basically a well refined Korean grind mmorpg. However player interaction is even less than usual. The graphics are very good, but the world feels hollow and without substance. I'd definitely recommend trying this game to see how it adds to the genre, but it is very hard to maintain attention once the grind kicks in.

Just play SG Granado,  it's still the SAME game,  it's being releases SOONER, and it's going to be FREE.    What more could you ask for.

Obviously, we have opposite views on PvP.

To me, playing a game with open PvP is a pointless waste of effort ("oops, I just got ganked again by some 'uber' dud3" every 5 seconds is less fun than doing work) so I avoid any game with unrestricted open PvP (consensual PvP (many games) or limited area PvP (EVE, WAR, DAoC, and a few others) are fine).

Its not like the grind is hard, it takes less then a month to get your characters to the cap level.

Besides, that was the Singapore version. SotNW will have increased XP gain rates. I recommend you play it again once it comes out. the Singapore version was running on version 1.8, this version will run on V2.0, which has more then 3 times the amount of content.

SotNW is being done by K2.  Whether the game has merit or not, DO NOT EVER give K2 your credit card info!

Personally with all the decent games out there, playing any of these free asian grind fests is pretty dumb.

somebody needs to edit this..there are a lot of typos such as "Player vs Player (PvP) and Player vs Environment (PvP)"...

I'm never, ever playing another asian, money grubbing piece of shit game ever again.  Monthly charge?  Or is it going to be a supa-uber mall where you have to buy items with real cash so you are not gimp?
Yeah, follow Vingvega's advice, just be a hypocrit and stereotype all those games without even trying it.

Quit being a hypocrit vingvega. this game is known for being unique and different. your pathetic stereotyping is not going to work on this title.

Why would you want to hit the cap level in a month? Why would you want to hit it in 3 months? 6 months? Why wouldn't you want to play the game for a year or 2? If you hit the cap in a month or so, what's left to do but grind for better items? hate to say it but... WoW anyone?

hehe well, "personally", end game in WoW was grinding. And not nearly as fun as grinding can be.    I just got sooo tired of hearing 1 or 2 people telling raid groups do this do that stop it yer an idiot do this do that.... Really took a LOT away from the game for me. i'm tempted to jump back in to explore TBC some but when I get up to end game again, I'll just cancel again and keep waiting for somethine new/fun.

Crap, I am SOOO off topic here. Apologies all around!
