Eve-online has got destructible objects (Player owned stations).
The main problem with destructable objects is:
They can be destroyed at any time, but the player is not always online to defend it.
--> This leads to strong npc defenses for the object
--> This leads to bigger attacker groups that attack your house in the middle of the night.
--> Defending at 2 in the morning sucks so the object will have an invulnerability mode so that the defenders can group and be ready to defend when the object comes out of indestructible mode at a reasonable time
--> A spiral of blobbing starts. In the end you have huge battles for a puny house with 10 rat tails in it and even without human defenders you will need 15+ players to win against the npcs defenses.
If someone has an idea of fair game mechanics without blobbing then cough them up already.

I think this is a good idea overall you see i play eve and it has this already in the form of POS's [Player Owned Stations].
It would be a good focus for Guilds imagine a guild builds a small Town surrrounded by walls. When at war eveyone in guild will ahve an interest in defendeng there Village or raiding there war enermies Village.
This could invigorate some MMO's out there if done right in the right atmosphere that can support it. Plus it would be a good Cash sink.

that sounds like a solid idea, make guilds able to make a city, with walls, a keep, all that jazz. Aguild large enough to support a city should have people on hand to defend it at all times, or it oculd be you could only have a certain number of people attack a city at a time? i hate restrictions but a situation like this demands some. or it could be that city raids have to be planned ahead of time, like in AoC

Though the mechanics are much like you talk about. Im sure we will see a game in the next 5 yrs that does something like that.
can you spell Shadowbane?
Not as if this is a new idea and has not been tried before. It went over like a lead balloon too.

With a large enough city, it might take several guilds to ally together to keep it defended....
