I was a big supporter of Vanguard. I feel violated now.
This game is, at the end of the day, simply not very fun.
*Forced grouping is idiotic.
*The so-called "freedom" is a joke. A big world (which I love) does not = freedom. Being able to do what ever you want (like in Raph Koster's original SWG) is what I call freedom. Even today SWG is still the most complex and ambitious MMO ever devised.
*XP is too hard to come by - after 8 hours of hard play I expect to move up more than a level or two.
*Almost nothing for role players - no player placed campfires, no reason to hang out in a tavern, no nothing. I can't even get of my mount without it auto-storing.
*Koster's ideas of "more fun faster" seems to be lost on Sigil. Strange considering Brad looks up to Raph and even played a big role in making original SWG happen. We sould get boats and houses at around lvl 20. Maybe get a mount at 10 (as you do), a house at 20 and a boat at 25-30. It's too much work and not near enough reward (nothing to look forward to). Having to kill 500 enemies to go up 1 lvl is stupid - nothing to do with skill and everything to do with time sinks.
*I'm bored out of my mind.
And so... I quit.
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.

Is there no saviour.... why.....
It'll be very interesting to see how the first expansion (probably a while from now) will be.
Hehe... I remember how you were Vanboing these forums up too in the beginning.
I'm guessing that's why you changed your avatar to Sloth?
I'm just kidding. It's really sad how they messed up this game with a lack of content, bugs, etc. , since the makings of a great game are there in trace amounts.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
Absolutely!
It was a major reason why I also quit.
Great post, my Friend. I believe a lot of people quit for the same reasons you mentioned.
Hehe. Me too.
I find no current MMORPGs acceptable, although I honestly have no issue with LotR.
I am going to start playing Civilization IV again, continue playing CC 3 and Warcraft: The Frozen Throne.
I really enjoy visiting this web page as I also wait for WAR.

Im kinda in the same boat now, Currently waiting for a new MMO, more gearing towards AoC.
Currently playing The Guild 2 for a while. Also visiting this site takes up time at work, sitting here in my Cube lol.
Pretty much my reasons for quitting after 3 weeks; and I'd beta'd it too. It seemed to get better at end of beta, then backslid, though it might have just been my perception.
Which one of the "Games in Development" will meet its promise? I've been betaing LotRO since I left VG, and, for me, it is exceeding its promise. I only hoped they wouldn't mess up, but they've done far better than that. Economy still needs work, being adjusted as we "speak". Rest is in very good shape. And it's FUN! More than anything else since the early days of my first MMO.
Welcome to the crowd - a LOT of us have been there, done that.
And I got the digital download, so I can't even use the CD for a coffee cup coaster
If you dont like gouping why play MMo? go play a single player game.
& why u r there why not start at the maximium level too.
I love the leveling system. Means you have earnt your level and you don't see everyone around level 50.
You wanna be max level in how long would suit you?
The 1st few levels til about 10 fly by, can be done in a day easy then its starts getting harder but the quests become better.
And with the death penalty Means Noobs cant get max level as easy. quests take skill and a bit of planning.
I have solo'd til about level 15 by the way.
First, learn to read. The guy said he hates forced grouping, not grouping in general. Secondly, each person has a preset tolerance for inconvenience factors. You obviously like slow paced, hard work type gameplay, he and myself and others do not, but do you see us ridiculing you for that? Other points of view should be respected, even if you don't agree with them. There are plenty of old school games on the market, including EverQuest which is still going pretty strong. I find it odd that games coming out at this point in time would try to go back to that style of play, especially in light of World of Warcraft which proves that lighter, less time consuming gameplay can be and is a money maker.
Some of us play these games for the entertainment value and the last thing we want is a "GAME" making us feel like we're working a second job, only we're paying the boss instead of the other way around.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Exactly.
Forced grouping without meaningful and fun solo content simply creates frustrations and prevents people from "playing," enjoying, and experiencing the game.
People's threshold for tolerating LFG and/or LFM is perhaps at an all-time low and will never change. I anticipate people will in fact even have less tolerance for LFG/LFM timesinks in the future.
Ironically, Vanguard is a forced-grouping game and it is difficult to organize and then coordinate groups because travel is impractical, thereby exacerbating the problem of forced-grouping.
yes there are MANY of us who feel like this. i've wasted 50 bucks on stupid crap in my life but nothing ever left me feeling as disapointed as this POS.
Last time I looked, there was no requirements, rules, or laws that you had to group to like playing MMO's. That statement - even though often repeated - is totally stupid and irrelevant.
And "u", "r", "ur", "earnt", are not words in the English language.
And where did the OP say anything at all about when he wanted to be max level? Why did you even bring up that dead horse / red herring?
The only thing you left out was "go back to WOW"
Actually I still like Vanguard and it has a lot of concepts I like. But I do agree about forced grouping it is a very bad idea. Still I find that I give VG less and less time, since I find LOTRO to just get better and better. The downsides to Lotro is the hand held and spoon fed entertainment but the mask this pretty well. That is a game growing on me all the time.
VG is good, but now, after a couple of months I think Brad has gone wrong somewhere cause it does not have the same epic feeling as EQ1 did. Quite similar to EQ1but not quite as good would be my verdict now. As I said, I do like VG but I will still cancel soon, at least that is my feeling at the moment. Forced grouping would be one of the reasons for this. Actually I'm quite sure there was more solo content in the original EQ than in VG, very strange design decision.
But forced grouping isn't "idiotic".
If there is enough population to sustain groups and making/running a group doesn't take more than 2 hours, forced grouping would probably become enjoyable grouping and thus becoming a moot point.
In a game like Vanguard with performance/bugs related with grouping, huge time involvment and poor rewards, yes, grouping is idotically designed.
But don't discard grouping because Vanguard fucked it up.
Soloing is good to have as an option, but it's not fun.
My addiction History:
>> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
>> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
>> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.
Sure, healers/casters/hybrids could painfully solo mobs for a living, but it was tedious and boring, and unless AE kiting as a bard, less efficient than grouping, elss fun, less rewarding (stuff wise)...

I am probably looking back at EQ1 with rose tinted glasses since it was my first MMO. But what I really liked about EQ1 was the feeling to the zones, they felt very different to each other and as an RPer I could really immerse myself. For example, one character I had never got higher then lvl 14, but that was fine since I RPed a halfling fighting off the goblins in Misty thicket and never daring to venture into Runnyeye. I could have fun this way because the zone was so well designed and the feel to the little halfling town was great.
I also loved the trolls and dark elves and lore that was built around them.
But true, most things you could do was grind, especially solo, but the environment surronding you felt more alive and inspired. I consider this very strange since this was something I thought Brad was going to build upon in VG.
What I do like about VG is the open endedness of the world and that you can in fact reach every location you can see. I also like the class system and all the races, but they feel less inspired then in EQ1. I love the idea of free flying mounts and building your own house. I also think it is a very beautiful game, but the more I play Lotro the more I appreciate the graphics there and the more I think VGs graphics bland, something I would not have said a month ago.
Part of my fondness for EQ1 probably stems from having been in the best RP-guild I have found in any game so far - House Velahr.
