Looking at the game for the first time, can someone please answer a few questions?

Hey all.  I just started looking at WAR, and from what I've seen so far I am interested in it.  I am currently playing Vanguard on the free for all PVP server, but am getting constantly annoyed by the lag and lack of class balance (I'm a Monk, pretty much the worst character, and it sucks...).  The game has good content and aspirations and all, but it just feels clunky and unbalanced right now unfortunately....

So I look towards WAR.  I want a good PVP game with solid PVE on the side, with hopefully enough content that is soloable and groupable if I ever feel like it.  I am worried however that since I have a tendency to play pretty hardcore that I will extinguish all the content the game has really quickly.  I know the game isn't even really in its beta stages yet, but I was just wondering if you guys knew the answers to these questions:

-Is there a lot to do endgame?  I.E. a lot of rewards and high-end stuff to work towards without having to be committed to some huge raid guild and raid all the time?  (Yes I played WoW, but I come from a UO background and I liked being able to solo and get good stuff with a small group of friends).  I'm just worried there won't be enough high-level stuff to keep me interested.

-This game is pretty much based on PVP I see, so I was just wondering a bit about what class would best suit me.  I've always like being able to deal big damage fast, but as a melee character.  From what I've read Orc Choppa sounds up my alley, does that sound right?

-I assume all the servers are all RvR, but I assume there might be atleast a way to duel your own team?

-I've seen it asked other places but didn't see an answer, but is there meaningful crafting / other things to do besides just fighting all the time?

-How does the level system work?  I've seen briefly the rank system, but again, I'm very concerned that I will just be able to breeze through the game and get to the highest level really quickly.  While I don't like a TOTAL grind, I don't like stuff like WoW that you can get maxed in a few weeks.

Anyways, I realize it's probably pretty early to be asking this stuff, but I'd appreciate any feedback you guys can give.  I know you get a lot of these topics, but hopefully I'm not just one of those "wen is thiz gaem comin out??/" kids.  Thanks for your time!

Ill try to anwser some of ur questions. First of mythic dosent seem to want to force ppl into ur WoW end game grind feast so im sure u will be able to do a lots of fun pve quest also in endgame.

Ork choppa  sound about right even if also the more "tank" oriented classes might be ok for u in this game.

There will be crafting but im not sure to what extent or how till will work.

I have no idea how long it will take u to reach max lv but i get the feeling that it wont be extremly long.

Im sure someone else can fill u in a lot better but this might be a start.

Hard to say at this point.  They've said that 80% of the end-game content will be focused on the skirmish areas - PvP areas, PvP public quests, PvP individual quests, battlefields and scenarios (along with at least one end-game PvP dungeon).  They've also said that the game will be released with a bit over 1800 quests - have to assume a reasonably significant portion of those will be in the end-game areas.  The end-game zones will consist of 9 large "field-zones" and six "city-zones", each with its own public & private quests, scenarios and battlefields (some or all of which will change depending on the status of the zone - whether its contested or owned, and by whom).

Doesn't sound like commitment to a raid guild will  be necessary - grouping in scenarios looks to be automatic, grouping doesn't matter in public quests and doesn't appear to matter on battlefields.  Appears that we'll be able to log in and hit the beach, guild or no guild.

Orc Choppah, Dwarf Hammerer, Empire Witch Hunter, and Chaos Marauder (no info in the Dark/High Elf careers yet) should all fulfill the role you're after, each in a slightly different way.

They'll have what they've called "normal" and "RP" servers, but all will mix skirmish zones with safe zones.

As for duels, Paul Barnett said the only way we'll be able to fight our allies is to delete our characters and join the other side - but it was an interview by a non-English correspondent, and a lot of people are convinced that he didn't understand the question and was talking about "no FFA" (the word "duel" wasn't actually used by either Paul or the reporter).

No real details have been released yet, they're keeping a pretty tight lid.  They have made some general statements in various interviews though.  Here's what we've heard:

    From Only-WAR's third editorial:

Statement of Intent: "I'm working on the crafting system right now and I can tell you this much, if we can pull off what I have in mind you'll be very, very happy. This is one game system that I'm aiming for "revolutionary " and not just evolutionary. While I normally prefer evolutionary systems (less risk) there are some systems that I really want to do something quite unique with and this is one of them. Most games, at best, are evolutionary, some are evolutionary with some revolutionary features and some, very, very few are truly revolutionary (though many devs love to boast about it for all their games in order to build hype). If we can create a fun game that is evolutionary with a number of revolutionary features, I'll be very happy."

    - Mark Jacobs

Some design goals that have been described to us:
    - All major crafting skills (leaving room just in case we want to do some pure "fluff" ones in the future) are being geared to the waging of battles both on the large and small scale - the manufacturing, repair, enhancement and improving of weapons, arms and equipment. Smiths should be able to make competitive products which can match up against even the best weapon drop.
    - Crafting will keep the Warhammer universe in mind: An Orc that runs around and collects flowers is hard to imagine. In Warhammer Online it will instead separate and collect the meat and bones of dead animals and opponents in order to make things.
     - The end game should have crafting that is useful.
     - The crafting system should not require you to create 100s of items to advance a level, rank, etc.
     - The system should not encourage farming, whether for loot or through the crafting system.
     - There should be a wide range of items available for creation and use.

No real idea on the speed of advance - the only comment on the subject I've seen was a remark that advancement will curve - going quickly early on but slowing as we advance in ranks.

We know that we'll be able to get xp (and loot) both from PvP and PvE (other player characters will drop loot from a loot table based on their PvP rank, and give you experience).  We also know that there are several different experience bars that look like they need to be filled before you rank up (PvP/Renown, Primary, secondary, specialization) - but which will give their reward when they're filled (so we'll get to select new skills etc as each bar fills, long before we actually rank up).

    - PvP/Renown - Appears to open up new titles, equipment and abilities to those who accumulate renown by killing enemy player characters. - Primary Career Packages: Required skills, shared by all who pursue the career.  These are what make a Choppah a Choppah.

    - Secondary Career Packages: A wide pool of elective skills. This is where you can really customize your character, designing that Choppah who likes to use bows.

    - Specialization Packages: Not yet clearly defined, but apparently composed of 'style' skills that customize the way you fight (along with bonus attributes, etc). They've mentioned that packages might include custom emotes - those may be included in this category.

  • Thanks for all your information :-D helps alot. and by the way Skyles when you say:

''''Yup - they'll have what they've called "normal" and "RP" servers, but all will mix skirmish zones with safe zones.''

What is the RP stand for?

Sorry, RP = "Role-Play" - servers with a stricter naming policy and communication rules (no real-world discussion about cars, movies, politics, etc on open chat channels).

Skyles covered a lot of it. A few things though: The endgame is supposed to be endless. It focuses on the struggle between two opossing factionswhere they try to conquer each others' cities instead of the usual loot grind.  For example, Chaos is trying to capture Altodorph(sp?), while the Empire tries to capture the Invisble City. They're playing it up as this huge thing that will have as much replay value as the multiplayer mode for most first person shooters. It consists of five independent zones, all with their own PvE, Public Quests, PvP Objectives, Senarios and possibly even raids. You can actually win the game by taking your enemies capitial. It seems like it will be really fun, your faction setting everything on fire and the Orc even deficate on their enemies stuff. After a while your enemies should manage to take it back and the whole thing starts all over again. It seems like it could get stale after a while though, depending on how the content is done.

Also, a lot of people confuse 'RvR' to mean 'PvP'. RvR is a part of PvE too. It means you'll never just be culling random monsters, ever quest you take will be against the other faction. So far the only quests I know about are: "The vultures are eating our trophies!(the corpses of dead Dwarfs on a battle field.) Kill em!" and "Squigs are enoying the giant by bitting at his toes. Kill them, get some beer and get the giant drunk and then send him in the direction of the Dwarf camp." No clue on dueling. It seems almost neccicary given the lore of the Chaos Factions. Orcs have to fight each other, Dark Elves have to have violent political squables, Chaos is a bit Chaotic. I'd imagine Empire should have 30 paces duels and occuse random people of heresy. Dwarves should be able to settle Dwarf-Dwarf grudges too.

It's pretty much like Skyles said, the only thing that they've said about it so far is that they're thinking about it. It seemed like a "We're going to try, but don't get your hopes up." statement to me.

We're not sure exactly how the ranking system works yet. It seems like an effort to make PvP areas open to more people. Like in most games a level 25 would have a huge advantage over a level 20, but in WAR they'de both be about Tier 2. I don't see why people would go through it any faster then they would with levels though.

Thanks for not being one of those. They make me worry about the human race sometimes.
