i smelt a rotten tomato just reading between the lines during beta. (yes I can smell tomatoes while reading).
On one hand im sorry to those who dropped money into this and on the other hand I sincerly wish the main people breaking good potential titles at $OE would mysteriosly vanish.
dissapear you dolts ! go back to micromanaging firms who do not have passonite players willing to spend hundreds of hours learning and exploring every bit of an online world.
I swear on the Legion of Darkness I shall never give my money to $OE.
long live free speech and where is that darn spell checker ?!?

The Legion of Darkness eh? LOL
Okay, serioius question for you here. If it wasn't for SOE, there wouldn't be a Vanguard at all right now, right? Wasn't it SOE that bailed out Sigil when MS dropped them?
Honestly, Vanguard fans should be thanking SOE (not calling you a fan, just making a general statement here).
LOL okay, fine they gave us a pile of poop to make a quick buck on. Micro$oft doesnt deserve any credit for being a good company either, they are just money grubbing greedy whores too but they do make our OS... Oh Legion, I dont want Vista please.
Anyway, what was I saying? oh yes, pile of poo... I dont like poo and could have done without it so im glad I didnt step in it to begin with, but I did look at it carefully.
SOE saved Sigil from a true instant DnL death by allowing them to release in January rather than in July! Can you believe it, Vanguard would be almost 1 year old if MS still held the reins.

Vanguard would be almost a year old if Sigil knew how to make a game.
Spare your pity OP, I dont need it. I love VG, and the money it costs me is paltry in terms of entertainment returned.

hmm microsoft knows whats its doing but to me it seems they not doing that great XBOX360 causing lots of troubles where i live where laywers are working on things to make that clear to Microsoft who continue to not admit their flaws with many xbox360.
”This decision was made mutually by Sigil and Microsoft, in the best interest of the long-term goals for the title,” said Phil Spencer, General Manager at Microsoft Game Studios. “As a key Windows development partner, we will continue to work with Sigil to ensure Vanguard’s ongoing success.”
“As the development process is ongoing and constantly shifting, it became clear that MGS and Sigil had varying visions and direction for the title’s development,” said Brad McQuaid, CEO of Sigil Games Online. “In the best interest of Vanguard, it was decided that we would buy back the publishing rights from Microsoft.”
Just a few quotes from both parties, sure we can speculate all we want and find things like i just show but still i highly doubt we will know the reall reason.
I'm playing Vanguard and really enjoying the game. I look forward to the many years it's going to take me to explore all aspects of the world of Telon.
Please note...free speech isn't free..hundreds of thousands of people died so you can flap your jaws.
Free speech also includes free consequence too.....just something to chew on while you throw " free speech " around so liberaly.
You pitiful little fool. Don't you realize that $OE IS the legion of darkness! OMG you're in for such a shock when you confront Smedley and he tells you, "SmurfMagic, I am your father."
What will you do then Smurf? What...will...you...do...then?
I guess I'm just some SoE Fanboi because I enjoyed EQ as well as EQ2 and now am enjoying VG despite the bugs. If anything, the early attitude of VG (We used to be them, but now were better) pissed me off.
I'm guessing that the OP uses some form of Windows XP. Well, if we went by their standard of anything by SoE is crap and I won't support it, then we would have to look back at things like Windows 286/386 and Millenium and refuse to use XP? SWG was flop I guess, I never played it., so I will never know, however I don't judge a company by a single product.
The main cause, most likely, was Sigil missing release dealines. Missing product release deadlines in the corporate world, especially when they involve millions of dollars worth of shareholder money, are major fopaw's. Corporations plan future revenues around these product release dates.
I would bet that MS was lighting the coals under Brad's feet about releasing the game.
- How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
- I don't know, but some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?

QFEWe will never know what happened, but from a business standpoint it's easy to speculate.
Sigil goes to MS with the concept that the game will appeal to a great portion of EQ players noting also that they "escaped" from SoE and would love to bring those "Visions" to MS who needs a game in that Genre. MS assumes rightly that the team that helped develop EQ should have an edge on developing a new MMoG and backs them. Years go by along with some serious cash and MS starts to grow weary and pushes the completion of the "Vision". MS also having many "Visions" in the past can get a feel for when a "Vision" is becoming more of a "Quest for the Holy Grail" and starts to get nervous about when a release will actually happen.
Sigil then goes to SoE explaining how their really all old friends with the same goals in mind, surely, you of all companies can appreciate whats involved in the game development, you have the support staff, servers and money, back us for the win and help us escape from the devil that is MS, look, were that close. SoE takes them in only to later read posts by the company explaining how by supporting Sigil, your really not supporting SoE (that alone as an investor in your product would piss me off). SoE observes that deadlines are not being met and the vision is growing wider instead of closer to completion and pushes the hand.
I'm not one that buys the excuses made by Sigil, even though I PLAY VG and ENJOY VG. You can't develop something that should have been released a year ago, then complain that the hardware won't catch up for smooth play because you released it 6 months early. The two factors do not compute. You can't have the 2nd largest budget in MMoG history and one of the longest development periods, then complain that you could not do what others have done because you lacked time and money. You can't use your reputation in previous developments as a reference, then not be able to duplicate the same smoothness in the next game. (Read: If you loved what we did in EQ, then wait till you see what we have not done here).
It's a game when you and I log into play it. It's a business when people sink 35+ million into it and want a return on the investment. We can all point fingers at SoE, but think about it, if you bailed your friend's company out with a large investment that required that you go to the plate for them with your investors, how far would the friendship go when the money continued to pour out and not in?
My addiction History:
>> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
>> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
>> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.
SOE bailed out Sigil, and equally along with Sigil released an incomplete buggy game while promoting it as ready to play.
Obviously Vanguard fans are happy, but the majority of people who paid for the box and quit in disgust are not.
Where are you getting your numbers from? I have never seen the numbers of boxes sold or the numbers of players dropping out.
Till you can provide those data to us, I am calling you a liar; YES I AM CALLING YOU OUT, YOUR A LIAR!
If you can provide me with real data, then I will say that I am sorry, but till then, stop posting BS, get over it, that someone designed a game that was not meant for you, or a game you cannot afford to upgrade to run it.
I am willing to spend more money to keep up with the graphics, bugs, or whatever it is, If I can stay away from all the kiddies with $500 Circuit City computers or even most of the idiots, then let it be, it’s a nice side benefit. Not saying the top end computers owners are not idiots, but I am willing bet those that spend the $$$ for a better computer are more serious MMO gamers then most $500 computer owners.
Peace.
Well, i have to say this, Vanguard have potential, and i played both beta and the free month, but...
My first MMO was DAoC, and i enyoyed it plenty, it had/has somewhat high standards (as i see it) a good game that ran smooth with no major bugs.
Second MMO was well, a chocker... WoW and like all blizzard games it has a huge standard, a game that was held back for almost a year untill it released. and with good reaseon.. they wanted a game that could be played from start to finnish from the release and that could live up to blizzard standard.
With Vanguard, i hoped the same.. but i was kind of disapointed, the beta was ok (after all, a beta.) but when i started the retail a just found that they had removed some of the things i liked (and things they was showing of about in their previews), like how you could make you char just the way you wanted.. they thrashed that.. and the world itself had a little to much empty space and you had to travel a great deal for a low lvl, before you even got the worse..
But i will not take this game for a loss just yet... if they would play there cards right (or just given this game a year or so) i belive that it can turn out to something good..
not all games can start with a smash like wow.. some build up their rep by trying... lets just hope they listen to the players and makes it a great game and i will be back.
untill then
over and out
HIstory point; WOW did not start out a smash hit and had major problems, which were both technical and game system. WoW became great well after launch and a major overhal of their servers
I respect your opinion, but comparing VG to WOW is not remotely fair. I am not talking about the bugs or performance issues.
I am referring to game play. WOW and VG are two completely different games. Anyone that says otherwise are clueless about MMOs.VG is so rich in combat, using the right spells or skills in certain order makes a big differences, You can acutely see the differences of a newbie player versa a vet player. I cannot say the same thing about WOW, the grey line between those types of players is allot smaller then it is in VG.
What may not be true is the endgame in WoW, most of the endgame mmo players takes a better team of players to succeed, hence why so many WOW players complain about the end game, cough cough.
VG is so much rich, maybe I am bias, my roots did come from eq, and I was definitely hardcore raider in eq for over 6 years. The way I played EQ is the same way I need to play VG.
The way I pull.
The way I DPS.
The way CC.
The way I group.
The way I die. (There is a special skill to die. more like where and when)
The way I control my pet.
The list goes on. Right now I am about 20, and having a blast. I am not currently in a guild, and won’t be for awhile. I have been mostly soloing so far, yes it’s harder. But doing group quest solo is a blast. Most games I have played I really do get bored, it’s too easy. I need more, and VG does supply what I need atm. Just the traveling around and doing quest for just that area is great. Once I finish the entire quest for that area, the game moves me to a different location. Yes I have died many times, but it has been easy to recover from it.
Like I said before I love the game. Yes your right it’s not WOW and I am loving it because is not.

LOL, first of all, you are the one that needed a history lesson. WoW SOLD OUT it's box sales the first week and by day 120 they had more subscribers in NA than any other NA AAA subscription based game. At the one year make they were in the multi-millions and now the rest is history. Point being, when you SELL OUT 175,000 copies and no more can be sold until the distributors get them to the shelves, you've set a new standard. Good luck to anyone that can match it.
Vanguard had their chance, they lost. Now we got a bunch coming up later this year. As I've stated in other posts, AoC with 100,000 beta sign ups easter weekend with over 50k sign ups the first 24 hours tells me AoC has the best shot at topping 1 million subscribers of the upcoming games.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
But over five years and 30 million dollars should have brought some of the potential to the game by now.
