No offense but I don't consider a game without pvp an mmorpg. That is my opinion. Why you ask? Because there is no point in playing. If you can't compete with ohter players what is the point of playing a single player game with lots of people? Seriously this game is going to fail hardcore without a pvp ruleset. Just my opinion. Why will it do worse than VG? Well the majority of tolkien fans are long past. Kids these days just don't care about lotr because its not emphasized in schools as much as it used to be. Give it a couple of years for allt he old people to stick around and you'll see what i mean. Besides the story has already been written and we all know the ending but back to the pvp element. Monster play is a cop out. It's way easier to implement than true pvp and allows microsoft to sidestep alot of the controversy surrounding it. Just wait till WAR or AOC comes out this game will be dead.
People play MMOs for different reasons. What do casual and hardcore players want out of an MMORPG? It's about character progression, immersion between the character and storyline, interacting with people who share the same goals, fame, and exploration. LOTR:O does a fine job with all of these and that's why many people are enjoying the game.
" Why will it do worse than VG? Well the majority of tolkien fans are long past. Kids these days just don't care about lotr because its not emphasized in schools as much as it used to be. "
There is a big market that still loves Tolkien and products that involve LOTR. For example, the movies that grossed over a billion dollars and that was in the past 5 years or so. The first step of creating a MMO is finding a franchise that will bring great success(Ultima series, Warcraft series, and so on). I'm sure there are plenty of people that will be happy that this game doesn't appeal to kids as much and will have more mature players.
Also...what the hell does Microsoft have to do about this game? I believe this game is created by Turbine and published by Midway. I read your post history and it seems like you're a horrible troll that loves to bash things instead of embracing the MMO industry.

seriously. not everyone's life is solely about competing with others. you say there is no point in playing when you can't compete with others. then why do people enjoy singleplayer games? why do we watch movies, or read books? what's so bad about a game being in essence a singleplayer game but giving it a little twist by putting it in a massive world and have people play together?
If it's done right, I've been known to participate in PvP in various MMORPGs but I still have a hard time considering that to be PvP. At best, it's character vs. character because *glares in WoW's direction* it's who has the best gear, not which player is more skilled. "Skill" in traditional MMOGs is often little more than who can tab target then spam 1,2,3 the fastest.
If I want some real PvP competition, I'll load up BF2142 where it's truly my skills (or the lack thereof, I seem to have a huge bullseye on my back) vs. those of the other players, and teamwork is truly encouraged and rewarded. *sigh at WoW's Alliance...* That's more intense and rewarding than any PvP I've ever done in any MMORPG to date.
Quite frankly, I've never heard a mature reason for wanting (usually demanding) PvP from the so-called "hardcore PvP crowd." It usually seems to the kids who want to gank and "i pwn j00 n00b" and then call it "competition."
But hey, not every game has to be identical to every other friggin game out there. The kiddies can go to Vanguard and train mobs onto the lower level characters and "lol n00b" all they want. WAR will be out later, the kiddies can go there and PvP all they want. Why do they think LOTRO should be "required" to have some hardcore PvP ruleset just because GameX is doing it or did it in the past? Some games are about PvP, some are all about PvE, and some treat them equally. Find what fits you and stay away from what doesn't.

No offense to you, but in my opinion I don't consider MMORPG PvP to be real PvP. If I feel the need for some PvP I play Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142. I have yet to try the PvM that LOTRO offers, but, it does look interesting. I still can't help but feel it will be the standard MMORPG queued button mash that you seem to think is PvP. Turbine didn't create this game for PvP....and I for one am glad. Grow some and come play BF2 or BF2142 with me. My screen name is "WillUBMyFriend" and I'll be looking forward to seeing you at the other end of my sniper rifle scope.
^^true. roadwarriors should give WWII Online a go if he's so hot on PvP. I wager his monitor would be thrown out the window in a matter of hours. Some of us like real PvP (WWIIO for me) while other posers hang on to the button mashing "PvP."
Having said that, I love Monster Play for what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

WoW is still a great game but the endgame is horrible. Played WoW for 2 years and TBC was a wakeup call for me on quitting the job(raiding 4-5 days a week, 4-5 hours a night, farm for pots/flask for progression nights, and the annoyances of raiding). It's a shame that WoW's only end game is raiding and I don't consider PVP end game since its so unbalance and a LOS battle. I've done all there is in WoW....started raiding from MC-Naxx, got several characters to 60 and my lock to 70. SSC suxorzz and WoW ran its course
I started to play LOTR:O a few days ago after my guild died in WoW and I'm having a blast so far. I'm playing a guardian which is level 14(the cap is 15 for open beta) and I'm amaze on how much depth this game has. There really isn't any "reputation" grind and it focuses on "deeds" which gives you traits to add to your character. The one or two instances I've done so far are really impressive compared to WoWs low end and I don't expect the end-game dungeons to disappoint me. The quests are similar to WoW but they are more interactive. It's funny how people believe WoW is the be all to end all and how they think WoW started it all but WoW got their ideas from other companies too. LOTR:O simply builds off of everything. The graphics are impressive and the animation is very nice. I'm surprise my PC could handle the game on high settings
I recommend you try out LOTR:O while you can before it releases this week. I've been playing MMORPGs since Ultima online and this is one of the best polished games and the community is so nice(still get a few idiots but it's not as bad as the elitists in WoW). You could try to preorder the game now so you can get the "Founder" status which gives you great benefits such as $10 monthly fees compared to $15. I can't comment on LOTR's endgame but editors from magazines said its something to look foward to. I'm really hoping Turbine will do their best with this MMO and actually care about the community by getting feedback from us

Yeah but it seems like there wont be any kind of reputation system in LOTR:O. Once you hit level 70 in WoW, you were forced to run countless runs to get revered to run the harder version which you have to do for the end game content? How f***ed up is that? Btw, I think in my OP, I stated that WoW is still a fun game.

Wait, wow started it all? Wow got their ideas from other companies? Just ideas? Wow is a 100% clone of EQ1, AC2. Lotro takes ideas from AC2 not from WoW. And AC2 is a product of Turbine, so they are copying themselves.
There was no hardcore content in WoW. It just seems that way because 95% of the wow population were kids that played their first MMORPG. For experienced mmo player (ac,eq) the content was easier then anything else. Nefarian killed 51 days after fresh server open. Ct'hun took 13 more days, and kelthuzad 21 (after cthun) So basically 85 days after fresh server open was killed the hardest end-game boss. Then it was just a mindless grind for more epics. It was no challenge.
bf 2142 and ww2 online are not in depth pvp games. i play bf2142 when i feel like just killing random people. Both games have no real penalty and are just frag fests. mmorpg pvp is more tactical and more in depth. but lort rings is ment to be a pvp game so why are we even talking about pvp hehe.
youre totally wrong sir. after 2 years of playing i leveled 4 toons to 60 then 2 of these to 70, on both sides, im pretty sure that ive seen the
90+% of the content, and i can say, that even the starting areas in lotr offer more fun then most of wow's.
ive never been a wow basher, neither a fanboi, i just played it after reaching 60 with my first char, because there was no better.
Wows current pvp, you mentioned, is far from enjoyable. World pvp = stupid ganking from both side, and some objectives, which are mostly nothing more then stupid ganking. Only one new battlground, with crappy purple design, and arena, let 10 people bash each other at 2 different locations, and call it new content. great. really great effort from a company that has all the resources of the world. Pve part is reputation grinding, nothing more.
Different game, same thread topic, same haters and same fanboy posts. Please this is getting old. Play what you want, enjoy it or not. I've beta tested most of the mmos, including LOTRO, and played all of them. Either you enjoy the game or you don't. It's hard to argue with WoW's numbers. No other mmo before or after has come close to their subscription base.
That being said, LOTRO is interesting but I don't see it holding my attention very long. Too many other games coming out this year not to look at. *cough* Warhammer *cough*
Reading comprehension? Yes.. I did play the beta. (as I stated) Neither of those two clasess (I played a Loremaster btw) are "PRIMARY" healer classes. As in.. that is their primary job. Let me ask you this: If EQ did not have a cleric class, and the druid was the primary healer of the game, how much less difficulty do you think all of the encounters would have been? (think of how long the game had been out before AA's and such before answering that) I guess we will proly have to agree to disagree on the minstrell. I always saw them played as much of a dps class as they were able to heal. Higher level, I could end up being proven wrong. We will see.
if u looked past WoW u would see that most games are going away from having a class that has its primary job to heal, they still heal just as good but they just have other stuff they need to contribute to the group like utility spells and for some games even damage.

To original poster.... This game is only questing... It has a few small things to do other than quest, crafting and PvP but that wont get your attention to long. There is no end game raiding in this game. Theres just questing until you hit the cap and thats it. Dont compare this to WoW, they are 2 totally different games. WoW is more gear oriented where you level a character and hunt for gear. This is quest oriented, you level up and quest. Made for those who like RPG's, almost like console RPGs and those who like to RP.
how would u know what lvl 50 play is like in a game that no 1 is 50 in yet

Monster play is a cop out. It's way easier to implement than true pvp and allows microsoft to sidestep alot of the controversy surrounding it. Just wait till WAR or AOC comes out this game will be dead.
See your already wrong. LoTRO has 650 pre-orders and on top of that had roughly a million beta's if even just 25% of these stick around it will be doing well over 100% better then VAnguard which at its best couldn't even boast a full 150K subscribers.
Your arguement about Tolkien being too old for todays kids is also a copeout the movies did very well and are alot more recent then say Star wars which still has a large following.
Lastly just because you believe PVP is the be all and end all of MMORPG just doesn't make it so, Sorry my friend you are no more the majority then i am. Monster play is easier to implement its true because it allows balancing. So people like you who do actually try it will be alot less likely to whine how this or that class is overpowered and whine if your class gets rebalanced (because of course your playing the most powerfull class you can find )
Why should people wait AOC or WAR, why not try it out and see if they like it and decide for themselves? From what i see it seems your simply saying this game will fail because its not the PVP game YOU want, So far it looks like you are wrong but time will tell in the meantime may you find a game you enjoy.
Try finding official reports that LotrO had 650k pre-orders. the 650k pre-orders is a rumor, made up and accepted as fact from what I have seen. I have looked all over the place as soon as I heard that Lotro had 600k pre-orders, but I couldn't find anything.
LOTRO is a great game...coming from another h/c WoW fan/player.
The game is balanced and has almost nil bugs from what I have encountered...minor at best. Just my opinion from my gameplay.
WoW is on its way out, IMO ( as the biggest thing/game ) ...Next X-Pac, level cap raised to 80? A new world! So what? It won't go away, but the subscriber base will slowly shrink as new games are released into the market in the coming years.
Blizzard is going to have to start over from scratch again...My best guess, at being one of the very best Developers out there in the market, is that they are already working on the next "big thing"...A new WoW...World of Diablo or some sort.
But back to the point...LOTRO is a great game. Give it a try.

I agree completely. It seems like folks (WoW players particularly) are threatened by this game for some reason. The game is based on a solid concept and story line, it has decent graphics, combat animations and the quests I found much more emersive than the average MMO quest (which i admit isn't saying a lot). The bottom line on games is they are a personal preference. I am currently playing WoW and EVE and enjoy them both quite a bit, but there are aspects of both games I don't like. However, I would not bad mouth a game as being horrible just because it didn't fit my playing style. I don't know if I'll get LoTRO, but I played the preview event and did find it a decent game with decent features. I am really waiting to see what happens with Warhammer Online before I spend too much more money getting set up in a new game.

As for the first part ... not according to the OP.He implies that low end instances are not as good as high end.
There was not much rep grind at the start of WoW also ... does this mean there will never be in in wow ... obviously not.

Do you know why your are forced to run reputation in wow ? Becuase otherwise you do not have an end game .. what raid all the time... yeah one could call that an end game , but it was be no differnt then the start and middle game. That rep grind is simply to keep you playing ... keep somethign to do in the game. WoW has pvp which u can end game in also... What does LotRO have? PS there alwasy has to be a grind of an end game otherwise your end game is pointless. However, makign that grind enjoyable is key.

Replay value will be rather small because it is basically reading/playing the same story over and over, but with just different character classes. Sure, there may be a few people who will not be bothered with that, and who may even enjoy the familiarity of the story line. However, the story can only go so far. The people who zip through the content (And you KNOW that there will be those who do) will get to the end, and go "Now What?" while they wait for expansion after expansion just so they can continue. I think this will get a little old for the more "hardcore" players out there.
This , ladies and gentlemen , is why they are offering the lifetime membership to people who preorder , they know the replay will be next to nill, and they may as well get as much $ out of the hardcore gamers as they can while the getting is good

And there will never be any rep grind. Deeds perhaps but nothing that HAS to be done in order to see end-game content.
=p i agree. WoW is the carebears of mmorpgs.
Slickest Viral evarrr...
You had me up until you started pitching the different price plans at the end.
a better interface. It makes the old EQ1's interface look
up to date
Hopefully someone changes this with a mod or something.
youre totally wrong sir. after 2 years of playing i leveled 4 toons to 60 then 2 of these to 70, on both sides, im pretty sure that ive seen the
90+% of the content, and i can say, that even the starting areas in lotr offer more fun then most of wow's.
ive never been a wow basher, neither a fanboi, i just played it after reaching 60 with my first char, because there was no better.
Pve part is reputation grinding, nothing more.
i dont think that you should compare wows lowbie content to lotr's lowbie content. or are you still doin deadmines?
im just saying that wows current content is depleted, while lotr is offering something new.

There was not much rep grind at the start of WoW also ... does this mean there will never be in in wow ... obviously not.
"Yeah but it seems like there wont be any kind of reputation system in LOTR:O. Once you hit level 70 in WoW, you were forced to run countless runs to get revered to run the harder version which you have to do for the end game content? How f***ed up is that? Btw, I think in my OP, I stated that WoW is still a fun game." ~ Tranman409 OP

In Wow maybe but ther are many other games wiht PvP and well world pvp is >>>> ID pvp anyday.
Oh and Wow's pvp is not bad its just limited in its scope.

Pretty much agree, i was just comment that almost every quaility he gave LotRO, WoW also had or could be argued is better then LotRO.
"Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one ..." - Thomas Paine
MMORPG stands for massivly multiplayer online roleplaying game.
According to your logic this hasn't even been invented yet.
