first off let me say guild wars is an awesome game!! everything seems to work great and the devs did a great job.

my problem with it is that it is not like our typical mmorpgs. i for one actually like traveling from place to place no matter the distance because of how immersed i feel. guild wars uses a warp system where the game is divided into "districts."

i probably will still get guild wars but i really had hoped it would have everything i really want other than just hack and slash, questing. i would have like to seen: wide expansive world, crafting system, housing (as far as i seen you cant enter any buildings in the game except partially destroyed ones)

grats to arenanet for making a good game but it isnt what many will expect

im sorry i seem to have gotten my sword stuck in your ribs

Dude, its a demo, and just a very very small part of the game.

Guild Wars may be a good game, but I wouldn't consider it a mmorpg.  I give it credit for doing things differently and going in a direction away from a typical mmorpg, but they may have done it so much that I wouldn't call it a mmorpg anymore.

It looks fun, but I wouldn't expect the expansive world that gives you a feeling like you are part of it and immerses you in it.  It's simply a PvP style game that makes the gameplay immediately accessible and fun, I'd say it is a no frills, watered down version of a PvP mmorpg, so far.

Yes, it is just a beta, but from all that I have read and heard about the game features, I don't think that much is going to be added in terms of roleplaying, exploring, crafting, and other things many of us like to see in a mmorpg.

Guild Wars simply is a different game, and we all need to understand that to appreciate it for what it is.  If anything, I expect it will give many hours of fun, and a nice break from the repetitive grind of some other mmorpg's.

Um could you point me in the direction.  Of where Arena.net has ever claimed Guildwars to be a MMORPG?  I've never once heard them refer to it as a MMORPG.  CORPG yes.  MMORPG no.

CORPG = Competitive Online Role Playing Game

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Although I consider Guild Wars to be an MMORPG (although not a traditional one) I completely agree with the first poster.

I too would have liked to see those things, but I knew they weren't gonna be in this game.

Guildwars has the potential to be the best online game in a long time and I am going to buy it when it comes out because I beleive it will provide years (that's right I said years) of enjoyment.

One thing that bothers me, is that if Arenanet doesn't consider it an MMORPG then why do they make the monthly fee comparison?

If it's not MMORPG then they shouldn't mention that it has no monthly fees. That's like the makers of Counterstrike saying that their next game won't have monthly fees. Kinda silly hehe.

Now let's see WHAT they are saying.

Arenanet is saying they are providing a PERSISTANT UNIVERSE which will hold thousands of players simulatneously and not charging monthly fees to do so.

Whether or not Guild Wars can be compared to traditional MMORPG's is up to you. To me, its a watered down MMORPG which should be better than any MMORPG currently on the market i.e. more fun, more action, less crying and frustration, and way way more replay value.

For me, Guildwars is a dream come true. I played starcraft for 3 years, warcraft 2 and 3 for another 2 years total, I love strategy games, and Guild Wars, UNLIKE ANY OTHER MMORPG is very strategic. I love RPG and I think Arenanet hit the nail on the head with this one. This game will be fun, for a long long time if it turns out well.

actually arenanet did say it was a mmorpg just not like "anything else".  im not saying the game is bad, its great its just not what ppl ignorant of what ArenaNet is trying to make will expect

im sorry i seem to have gotten my sword stuck in your ribs

I may be unexpected, but for myself and many others it is a breath of fresh air. MMORPG or not for me it is still loads of fun for me.

Plus with tournament style pvp there (ideally) will be no "OMFGWFT I WASN'T READY BLAH BLAH" or groups that attack you mid-pull and then spam "WFTPNED" over and over.

perhaps you didnt actualy hear him hte first time, Guild wars is not a mmorpg, nor has it ever intended to be, its a different genre, and from the E3's it looks like lotsa people are excited about it.

I for one love it, the teamwork is great fun, and the PvP is actually challanging.

Im sorry you feal that way but im sick of all these people saying
"im so dissapointed in Guildwars it wasnt a real mmorpg, and yadda tadda yadda"

after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

What you guys don't seem to get is that the game is specially designed to avoid the main problems of MMORPGs with one huge persistant world in them.

    What are those problems ?

    1. Lag when lots of players are in the same place

    2. Player griefing, Kill stealing, staying in line at guests, fighting for hunting spots, etc.

    3. Several worlds on several serves, so the playerbase is fragmented.

Guild Wars's lobby and district system makes all these disappear. Yes, you don't have those apparently huge areas, the feeling of total freedom; instead you have a more mission based approach with smaller but more action rich areas. Also the system allows more room to mission scripting so quests can be more fun, not just the Fed-Ex type like the majority of current MMORPGs have.

It is normal to be disappointed by the restrictions this system brings, but I think there are more benefits which counter that. Collecting resources and items isn't the main goal here, you are doing them without concentrating just on them, while having fun playing the given mission/quest.

With this innovative approach, probably a part of the MMORPG fans will not like it. But I am sure the game will have a huge audience, and will attract a lot of people who didn't consider to play MMORPGs at all.

Dude, let me just start off by saying that:

    1)It's just a demo,like ramadin said

    2)It's NOT a MMORPG,it's a CORPG

    and last but not least

3)If you've been keeping up with your Guild Wars reading, you would have found out that they will be making expansion packs in the future, adding more features to the game.

  • TiberiuxTiberiux Member Posts: 90

#2 is incorrect. At best it is only your opinion that it is not an MMORPG. Technically it is whoever, though not the same as UO, AC etc. Hence the CORPG subclass.

  • Deadaye13Deadaye13 Member Posts: 106

I would have to agree with Tiberiux.  MMORPG is just a broad genre that includes a huge amount of games.  You can, as Tiberiux did, put it in a sub-class to make the public stop debating wether or not it's a MMORPG or not.

So, in some aspects, simslosh is correct in saying it's a CORPG.  And also it's good that Tiberiux noted that CORPG is just a sub-class of MMORPG.

The simple fact that it was an E3 D E M O and was more polished than any game out there as of yet. And yes, I've played them all. I wouldve forked out money just to keep playing the E3 version rather than the full game. In my opinion its the best game soon to be on the market. I cant say whether it would compare to EQ2 or WoW but man. What I witnessed was so awesome.

The scope of the demo and the completely insane funfactor has won me over. For me, FUN is a key thing. Not running around 40 mins to get to a camping spot to grab yer uber lewtzorz! :D.

I can understand if you're not a competitive person and don't like PVP. Then yeah, Guild Wars falls short on hand. For somebody who loves both pve and pvp elements. Its a dream. The best part of all? the games fighting and pvp elements arent just a matter of whose highest level. It's also a matter of single strategy, group strategy and communications along with some luck ( luck being which 8 skills you brought into the arena or dungeon with).image

oh and might I add. NO MONTHLY FEE.image

My thoughts are exactly at this point. The game looks great but doesnt have the feel of a vast online world. The devs seems to be aiming this game at the faster pace crowd, similar to unreal tournament. Go online with your friends, warp to the location/dungeon and hack away.
