Let us measure state of SWG with how worth are ingame toons on free market.....PRE CU you had to pay 1000+ dollars for a toon, how much now ? and isn't toons most worth developed PRE NGE (aka Elder blue glowy)?
empty servers, poor gameplay , ingame toons worthless on market , credits worthless on market ..well NGE makes baby jesus and any economist you ask cry ....

The problem is that even today there are no other games out there that give you the depth and play choices that SWG USED TO HAVE. Yeah, it's a whole lot less now then it was before, but what other game out there has the depth? Maybe Ultima Online does, but that game is even older. Most games are just the loot and level grinds. Granted SWG today has that, but not to the extent of WoW or EQ or any one of the other loot, kill, rinse, repeat games. I like choices when I play an MMO, and SWG gives me A FEW more then most other games do. I played WoW for 2 years. How I played it for that long I don't know. I was bored for at least the last year I played. The only thing that kept me there were the friends I played with. Well, that just wasn't enough after a while. Their first expansion, while addressing some of the raid or die issues of pre-expansion, just didn't do anything for me. It was more of the same loot, kill, rinse, repeat. What do we have on the horizon? Who knows, but a sandbox IS the ONLY way to GO, classless, levelless, open ended, non-linear advancement, non loot based, player run economy MMO must be coming at some point. And maybe it will be Sci-Fi, because darn I'm sick of Fantasy...
Fixed and Amen!
SWG still gives you more choices then the competition, even if those choices are much less then before. It seems that most MMO companies don't even want to touch things like housing and decent crafting anymore. Housing is always an empty promise, and crafting is always second rate. Totally social classes (i.e. Entertainer) don't even exist outside of SWG, at least not that I've seen.
It seems the norm these days is to create a guided single playerish type game instead of an open ended game. I think that there are just to many people that are to used to playing single player games that stick to a guided story and bring that with them into the MMO world. So their expectations are the same. I'm sorry, but MMOs are an entirely different beast and should not be played through like a single player game, or even a multiplayer story driven game.
You are totally right in your post. When I left SWG the first time it was because of RL issues and the second and the third. I just didn't come back after I heard what a dibacle the NGE was.

I agree with you. SWG still is one of the most versital games out there. You can't name a game that has as much in terms of scope, customization, locations, items, vehicles, housing, city building, space combat and the crafting still has much more them 90% of everything else out there.
The problem is the players who were around before the current game simply don't like it. Maybe that in itself is understandable but the constant whinning about it at this point, almost 2 years later, is just old and worn out.
SOE needs to put out an expansion that significantly adds to the game (planets like Bespin / Hoth and few others, locations, quest, story...not another half assed one like the last 2) to distance it from the mythical "good old days" as much as possible. I don't know if that will ever happen so SWG will forever live in the shadow of what was. Right now, when you log in, its still the same game in terms of locations and activities as it was pre-NGE. There is to much of a direct comparison, hence the vets will always be able to claim "it was better when....".

I played up until the CU and because I didn't like the changes left for WoW (why WoW I don't know). Then I came back for a free trial post NGE, probably not the best of times to come back, and promptly left. Then a couple of months ago myself and some friends decided that we'd pop in for a month and check things out. We're still here and rebuilding.
The key here is to not take these games so seriously. I guess its easier to do when you come for the fun of playing in the Star Wars universe and not to be "l33t." I'm not here to grind out levels or make sure I have the best of the best of everything I can get my hands on. I'm here to play with my friends, run some missions, do some quests, fly my ship, do some crafting, watch some dancers, goof off in front of our guild hall (we do that a lot for some reason), run my small structure/starship business, etc. There are so many things to do to just have fun and kick back.
I played SWG from launch until Chapter 2 of the NGE game, so I think I gave the devs changes a fighting chance. I finally quit when I realized that the game I was playing was no longer fun anymore.
I will not go back to SWG ever again for the simple fact that it is not the same game I purchased originally. I can put up with balancing issues, bug fixes and content upgrades but the core game was fundamentally changed. SOE was willing to lose a good chunk of their subscription base to cater to "potential" new players who never ended up subscribing.
They didn't need me at the time, I don't need them and their watered down game now.
I just wish it was skill-based again. I know that it is still a grind but for some reason I never noticed it under the skill based system like I do under the level based one. The phoenix will not rise for me until that happens. Unfortunately I do not think that will ever happen so my only hope is for future games. I'm an SWG vet but I'm not an SOE hater. I have fond memories of this game and wished they had worked on all the bugs and lack of content instead of implementing the CUNGE.
It is a shame because I would love to be playing this game right now, but the changes were just too colossal. When I went back into the game it just felt like I was playing a completely different game that LOOKED like my old game. It just feels so different. Though I prefer skill-based, I still play level-based games. When I look at SWG though, I just can't bring myself to play it because of the memories of what it used to be. I suppose to the new people who play this game, it IS new to them. I wish I could see the game through their eyes, but I do not. Real shame. I guess the phoenix will never rise for many vets when it comes to Star Wars Galaxies.
I have to say the game is better now than it ever has been! Chapter 6 is going to kickass! I do think more content is needed...I hear that expansions are coming early next year. It would be nice if they were to bring back TKMs!!!! Come on back guys...The game is fun again!
not really, Pub 7, 8, 9, 11 werw allot better than what the state of the game is now.
