Anyone that went seriously into any crafting professions?

I wanna know if profesions can bring any serious cash and if they are easy or hard to get into.

Im hoping for some serious and complex crafting. Bored of questing/smashing mobs from the other games.

It's a matter of collect resources, then combine to create items, much like WoW, so it's not a incredibly deep system.

As to wether you can make cash or not, well it's early days. Some trades are harder to lvl up than others. Scholar is difficult, but tailoring and forestry seem pretty easy.

Crafting is meant to be a side game.  As it works now, the only items that are really worthwhile are items later in the game (40+), as before that crafted items are generally outdone by quest rewards.

The design is one of interdependence, such that you are given a profession which is a bundle of three trades, and typically you are not self-sufficient and need to get supplies from someone with a different set of trades.  Many players do not like this (because it siphons off profit to other players), and have chosen to work around it by creating numerous alts with various interlocking craft dependencies, to keep everything under one roof and not have to trade with other players.

As it stands now, crafting needs work.  Some professions are working more or less well (the armor, weapons and woodworking crafts and their related gathering crafts), while others are struggling.  Scholar, for example, suffers from a lack  of nodes as compared with prospecting and foresting.  Farming has been turned off in all but name because Turbine is working on a redesign of the profession, and cooking is also more or less not being pursued much because the cost of production exceeds the amount people are willing to pay for food.  Turbine is working on fixing farming and integrating it more closely with cooking in the weeks ahead.

So. overall, I would say that as the game enters release, crafting is still a work in progress and is certainly the weakest point of the game right now.  The good news is that Turbine is working on it.
  • Normally they are outdone by quest rewards, but you can't forget the proc'd stuff people can make. That tends to be far superior to anything else near that level.
