This is more a pointless rambling, since I am bored.
I am playing MMOs for several years, since SWG was new, which was my first and biggest MMO love. I played it 2+ years and then with breaks. It was great, even after NGE I played it once and then, being not that fixated on one concept. Then I had my almost 3 years EQ2. A good game, but... after all the time I just had enough of it. EoF was a cool addon, really, but I was tired of the same old. I had 6 months WOW intermezzo which was ok but never thrilling. It didnt capture me.
I was in COH/CoV - one of the best MMOs from a certain point of view: very good community, the great possibilites of character creation, the really cool super heroes/villains theme and the lack of item loot competition was really enjoyable. But the game system... offices, caves and cargo halls x 10000. After a certain time you just have seen EVERYTHING, in principle. I loved it, but the missions are basically all the boring same after a time. (I really hope MS their Marvel MMO will rock, but its far away.)
Since I stopped playing EQ2 seriously about 8 months ago I have an odysee through MMOs. Trials, betas, F2P, whatever is out there and remotely sounded like fun, I tried it. I went to the original EQ, DAoC, UO - they were all nice but I did not want to go into 1990 graphics. I tried out Lineage II - but besides the gaphics I didnt like much it was just too cold and grindastic.
I was in a lot of betas, some ok some disastrous, but nothing that was remotely good: RF Online, Archlord, ROSE, Dark and Light and some minor I cant recall now. Also 2 others presently, which I cant name, but are also "nice" but not enough.
Then I was in LOTRO and Vanguard (VG) beta. Both betas were quite good. I subscribed to VG, because of the big world, the stunning graphics and the many things promised. In the end, it was only a very cold and soulless world for me, nothing that captured me, nothing that spoke to my heart like SWG, CoH, EQ2 or even WOW had done. And LOTRO... I wish that game luck, they did a great job, but... the world is just too small. Small in size but especially small in scope. 4 races, 4-8 classe depending on your race, there is so little to chose from so little of... everything. It sure is good, but for a MMO vet like me, its to simplistic. I want to big bag of things to see and do! But I also dont want a cold and sterile world like VG.
So what now? I keep looking out, but nothing really looks thrilling as the MMOs I had played. AoC? No thanks, I am not into macho-mass-kill-orgies. Spellborn? Eww, safe me that really weird art design (not to speak the system of a game where you cant grind because you only get XP for quests). WAR? Bleh, FAR too ugly.
I dunno, did I become picky? Are MMOs getting worse? Whats going on? Am I the only one with that problem? We have more MMOs than ever and yet I feel less inclined to join any than before. Its not that I am burned out. When I am going back to EQ2 out of nostalgia, I enjoy it, just its not my world after all the time anymore. I really feel like I want to start a new MMO, but nothing I see in 2007 really feels like what I seek. I just wonder if its me or if the MMO developing companies just get astray?
Discuss. ^^

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
It seems to me that you need a change of scenery why dont you try final fantasy xi i no people say its just a grind fest and the pvp and pve is boring but its not thats just aloud of ffxi bashing bitches who say that.
The pve and grinding is actully fun and theres a big story to it and the end game is huge really big.
plus chocobo's ffs CHOCOBO RACING FTW!!
trust me play FFXi its god
Well you look like you are scattered all over the place. You went into great detail about your play history but what about you and your playstyle. You can answer your own questions if you know what you are looking for.
First bit of advice: forums are full of opinions, and opinions are like arses, everyone has one, so take any game requemendations with a grain of salt, we all want people to like what we like. Research whatever game you are interested in first, forums are ok if you want the "troops in the trenches" opinions but often there are a ton of non-combatants screeming, yelling and jibbering on.
Explore your playstyle. What do you like? Start basic. Fantasy, Sci-Fi. Do you mind a lot of grind or little grind? Do you like a strong in game community or are you into the goals and "rewards"? Do you like a lot of pre-made quest or sandbox? Classes or skill systems? Strong crafting or heavy combat? Do you like alot of customization, moderate or it doesn't matter? And whatever else you think is important to you.
Once you can answer some of these questions, it a matter of matching up a game to it. Then you really need to apply yourself to the community. Grinding 2 or 3 toons a few levels up and not trying to talk to anyone is just wasting your time. You focus mainly on the games features and mechanics, remember the mechanics of a game are only a portion of it, MMO's are community based games. That is something many MMOers have forgotten.
If you are just wandering around loading up anything and everything just to give it a try, nothing is ever gonna stick. Find a game that fits your playstyle and really dig into the meat of the game which is ALWAYS the COMMUNITY.
I made similar expiriences but didnt play so many games for longer like you did, but I did test most of them you described. Well there was a time when one mmofps could hold me almost 3 years, after that i switched to lots of beta testing and trials, played some months wow and did the beta testing phase again.
Well, if you really want to hear my honest opinion - you are finished with mmorpgs - Yes, i think there is some time you enjoy games, everything is new especially your first mmorpg. After this amazing expirience you are looking for a similar kick and try out new games.
But here is already the problem, most of the mmorpgs are just copies or very similar. Most of them are fantasy, most of them have the same race, class, crafting and game content.
After a while you realize that you get bored, maybe you dont think that is true and you are still looking for a new exciting better game. So since the current mmorpg market can not offer that, i think some people are just dryied out. Maybe sometimes the time will show to move on to other hobbys, different type of lifestyle with your freetime. The mmorpg market stucks since years, most of the time only better graphics but less new game ideas, content etc....
I would say, say good bye for a longer time and get more distance to those games..maybe in 1-2 years you find a new game for you, maybe in the future you dont want to play anything else since you did find some new excitement in your live.
Iam sure iam right with my assumptions, not sure about you but at least for many veteran gamers.
Its time to make new decisions
One guy stated " I think you are done with MMORPGs" I'm much in the same boat as you. In fact if Warhammer Online don't steal my heart the days of MMORPGs for me are over as are the days of me paying monthly subs.
I went from DAOC to WOW pretty much with games like COH, Shadowbane, Lineage II, EQ2, Vanguard, etc, etc..
No game ever compared PVP wise to DAOC and no game on the market does some 5+ years later after DAOC release. So i look at things i do and don't like. Some of the things i don't like are gear centric PVP games, grind fests, instance anything, Points for PVP ie Honor/WOW, DAOC/Realm points. PVP was actually not bad in WOW until they added tally for gear honor points systems. The game changes when you PVP for fun vs PVP for skills and items.
What i do like is team based, large, wide open spaces PVP that DAOC had. To this date there is no more realm/team based PVP game on the market that can compete with DAOC. I actually thought about buying the 5th Anniversary Edition of DAOC but its dated graphically and me likes my eye candy!..
Right now I'm playing Supreme Commander which is probably the best RTS war game on the market. Back on topic. The thing is you have game companies like Mythic that set the bar for all other games and the truth is most of the new games just made minor improvements to the DAOC concept and haven't over the years created anything innovative let alone revolutionary.
Look at WOW for example vs DAOC. It had a really nice Auction House system , personal mounts and what i thought originally were more solid classes but all in all it was the same thing. Grind , level, grind, level, PVE till you puke and i don't much like PVE at all period but i have to PVE to get gear to be competitive in PVP bleh /rant off.
Just go to Best Buy or some place that sells game software and you see online this and online that .. Their are tons of online MMORPGs but in general they are just clones of one another. We need a game thats new, innovated, PVP based and exciting to play with cause and effect PVP.. I hope Warhammer Online is this game because if it isn't I'm pretty much done and will play the more creative offline games.
A nice tip for you... World of Warcraft ownz!!
I guess you should look with more atention the mmorpg's lists.
Uhm... no
After playing so many other MMO's with a real challenge, such as EQ1, WOW would be a step back to pre-school.
And the OP is right. There seems to be very little coming up soon that sounds really interesting. 90% are just another EQ clone, with all the usual elves and dwarves. Even LOTRO with all of it's well done quests and gameplay, is still just that - Tolkien Clone #183.
It is long past time for someone to make a truly innovative and original MMO, but looking at the list of upcoming games for the next couple of years I simply do not see much. 90% are fantasy, 9% are SF, and 1% are.. what?
